He obviously is underestimating BK's power of persuasion.

Is it confirmed that BK is flying out to speak with him?

Seems like he wouldn't waste his or Fickell's time if there's "less than 0% chance".

This kind of bums me. I was digging this potential hire.

Seriously, Debbie Downer. I can only take so much of the fickle recruits chatter and rumors. At least coaching decisions implicates some sort of longer-term, program-direction talk. Even if it's all a mirage.

Whoa! Relax, it's not like I'm sitting in a warm bath tub with a razor blade in one hand listening to the cranberries. I'm just saying I was into this rumor, hoped some thing would of or can happen. What's wrong with that?

I think he was agreeing with you. The news that it's not gonna happen is a "Debbie Downer."

I agree. Major buzzkill. I really liked this move.

Who is this Sam Hubbard Athlete that he recruited? What is his relationship w Solomon Thomas who is scheduled to OV to pOSU in January.

Oh no. Don't get Lax started.

Just spent way too much time on Bucknuts trying to figure out if there is anything to this. Learned nothing except that Buckeye fans really hate Fickell. Literally everyone on that site blames him entirely for the problems on D this year.

All you can say at this point is that Kurelic's source seemed really sure that there was contact between Kelly and Fickell and a meeting is going to happen. I guess we'll see.

JMU to hire Everett Withers
The Scoop

James Madison: Sources tell us that Everett Withers will be the next head coach at James Madison. Withers has spent the past two years at Ohio State as the assistant head coach / co-defensive coordinator, and prior to that was the defensive coordinator at North Carolina for three seasons. Withers served as the interim head coach at UNC during the 2011 season (going 7-5) after Butch Davis was let go.

If what pOSU fans have speculated is true, the power struggle between Withers and Fickell is now over. Would seem like this makes it more likely that Fickell stays unless Urban wants to make wholesale changes on defense.

He can recruit very well and is a pretty big name even though the defense hasn't been great the past few years.

so whats the wordon the street? Did this meeting happen?

No word, although based on Bucknuts' coverage of the Withers departure they seem to expect Fickell back next year (but with another defensive coach above him, as Withers was this year). TIFWIW.

Btw, JMU paid its outgoing coach $220,000. Withers makes almost $600,000. Doubt Withers would take that job unless he was forced out. Pretty clear that Urbie thinks the problem this year wasn't just Fickell.

The original report was that the meeting with Fickell was supposed to happen either Thursday or Friday, so it may be that BK and Fickell will meet tomorrow.

My boss at work said he wouldn't have been surprised to see Withers forced out......from what has said, they were both the root of the problem, and he said he'd not be surprised to see Urbie make wholesale changes on the defensive side.......we shall see what goes on from here!!!

tbh having Fickell on the staff (with Vrabel too perhaps) would have been interesting. Its obvious he is not an Urbie guy, he probably should be getting some lower tier HC job offers though along the veins of FAU.

His wife sounds like a stuck up bitch. Also i personally think he would have been a pretty good hire even at DC

I seriously doubt Fickell would be coming this season, and I don't think I want him either. I can't really say if it's been due to him or not, but the Buckeye defense has noticeably deteriorated since the ousting of Tressel. I don't think he's a good fit here either.

Luke Fickell

There was no word about any meeting this week and as of yesterday afternoon the Bucknuts guys all seemed to think that Fickell will stay at OSU next season.

can you imagine having to coach alongside Urbie and his clowns after years of service to pOSU? You can't imagine thats a healthy work environment for anyone. Hiestand was considered a failure at UT but you have to consider they were starting four true frosh linemen towards the end of the season including a center who couldnt snap to a QB under center and had to snap shotgun only.

Per Kurelic at Bucknuts, Kelly did call Fickell last week to set up a meeting in Columbus, but Fickell politely informed Kelly that he and Urbie have worked things out. Fickell will remain at OSU in a reduced role (essentially just LB coach; co-DC in name only) at a reduced salary.

Fickell's recruiting prowess has saved his job, apparently. It sounds like Urbie really wants Fickell to focus on developing Raekwon. He expects him to start day one.

Also, it sounds like part of what was driving Fickell's interest in leaving was having to answer to Withers, so now that he's gone Fickell is happier.

I know it is a stretch but, I would love to see if Kelly could get Diaz if he was to leave since Mack is gone.

He was fired before Mack actually, early in the year. But he is still a good DC.... IMO

how'd that work for Mack? he got fired in season---Longhorns' defense, under Diaz, gave up 550 yards rushing to BYU, the most in school history. ... as "unacceptable" and fired him.........no thanks

My question is do we bring in any new guys? Or all promotions from within.

Personally I would like to see an outside hire for DC and a promotion from within for OC.
I think an outside hire for DC could bring in a new system that may fit our players better and simplify things, which I think helps a defense play faster.
On the flip side I don't see Kelly letting a non "Kelly System" OC take over the offense just as Kelly gets EG back to execute his offense.
Just my .02

I watched him coach at MTSU here in Nashville. He has had good runs as a DC and recruiter in Texas. He had a bad year this year and was fired. But that does make him a bad DC for one year. Also the year that Mack was bad as well and the offense for that matter.
