Would anyone rather have Mattingly than Randolph? I could see arguments either way but I guess we don't really need both, and I think Randolph is a better complement to Jaylon than Mattingly is.

Feel bad saying so because I do like Mattingly a lot; versatile big skill athlete that BK and the staff seem to do wonders with. Still think we might wish we had him as a backup tight end in a couple of years.

I don't who I want more. I agree with your analysis of both guys. Danny is a big athlete and you can never have too many of them. We know what we're getting with Randolph and it is a skilled player. Danny's upside is impressive though

It did seem that when Randolph commited that was when you first started seeing the cracks in this recruitment.

You could have all the talent in the world, but if you heart isn't at ND, it doesn't really matter. I'll take a "lesser" prospect who really wants to be here and will fully buy in and work rather than someone "more talented" who won't to the same degree. It's kind of why I love a kid like Onwaulu or Butler. They really love ND and I have no doubts that they will work their butts of and do everything BK, Longo and the rest of the staff ask of them.

That's the issue, really. Both at OLB and TE, we have better pure prospects that Danny, of which I'm sure he's aware. Thus, his primary value was in his versatility, but I can't blame a kid that's getting attention from other major programs for not wanting to come to ND as an obvious back-up.

Yep, I think that says it all. UCLA is a program on the rise with a lot to offer. If they are making him feel like a priority, then I'm not surprised he wants to go a different direction.

I do believe attention was a big part of it and its not a knock on the kid at all. He deserves it.

I did really like Danny and I see this as unfortunate news. We may have "high rated" options at both LB and TE but I know we had higher rated options at TE than Eifert too. This kid seemed to be a game to me.

This is probably on the coaches end. Blessing in disguise.

Good luck to Mattingly.

Wish he would have stayed. Had a good feeling about his potential at TE down the road. One way or another, I thought he'd end up on the O side of the ball.

Anyway, good luck to you Danny Boy.

He seemed so excited to be Irish...bummer. Seemed like a RKG from a good family. GL Danny!

I think it is unfortunate if decommitment is true. I was really looking forward to Mattingly playing for us. Oh well, you win some and you lose some. Good luck kid!

Unfortunate for him. His spot will likely be filled by someone who will make a bigger impact for ND. Best of luck to him nonetheless.
