I wish I could see Ed O's pre game pep talk this week. I'm imagining a combo of his Hummer commercial, telling players they're stupid if they go to class and the scene from Animal House where Bluto tries to rally the troops.

Personally, I would put Sark at the head of the list. He has done a great job at Washington. His ties to the program also help. Del Rio... that would be a win for everyone else. Good coordinator... not so good a HC. I think Peterson's ship has sailed... he should have left two years ago. Petrino is too much of a risk with his past issues... the NCAA would be all over USC for that potential hire. Strong would be an interesting hire. But does he have enough ties to the West Coast to recruit? Yes... USC recruits itself but that is my one question on Strong. End of the day my money is on Sark.

I don't know if Sark burned any bridges when he left for UW but if so that was pre-Haden. I share your choice.

As for Petrino, I don't understand why the NCAA would have any interest in his hire. His meeting with the Auburn cabal was a question of personal ethics not a NCAA regulation. His affair and hiring his girl friend put his employer at risk for a lawsuit and state employment law violations but again no connection to a NCAA regulation.

Those weren't Tressel-like NCAA situations but rather along the lines of Mike DuBose and Wimp Sanderson having affairs with their secretaries. Unlike Petrino, Sanderson's 15 year affair with his secretary was no secret. My mother-in-law told me about years before the secretary filed a lawsuit following Wimp giving her a black eye. My in-laws were well connected within the inner circle of the UA System back in those days. Seems there were a number of trustee wives unhappy and quite vocal with their husbands tolerating the open flaunting of the affair for the sake of "W"s. But like Petrino, the Sanderson and DuBose scandals were moral and employment issues, not NCAA issues.

Has Petrino been sanctioned in the past by the NCAA that would carry over to USC if they hired him?

None that I know of. My thoughts on the whole NCAA take is that they would be more upset with the hiring of Petrino simply because the fact USC is in the mess they are in because of some shady dealings. Why bring a guy in that has had some "moral" issues in his past to add to the mess they already have. He is a great coach and would be scary at USC given the talent he could amass there. Minus his character flaws, he is a great coach on the field.

At ND, BYU, and a some other places Petrino wouldn't be on the long list because of the schools fundamentals. USC isn't one of those other places. Never has been.

When the UA Board of Trustees were deliberating DuBose's fate, a reporter asked about the significance of moral turpitude in the process. A Trustee tersely quipped, "Coach DuBose will be judged on "W"s and the "W" doesn't stand for women." DuBose was kept on despite the moral and legal issues but when the "L"s piled up, his "resignation" was accepted.

Haden needs a "W" coach for his angry base not a "white hat" hire like ND did after O'Leary's resume fudge or UW did after the Slick Rick debacle. That "white hat" demolished two programs.

I doubt Haden would have hired Kiffen, if he had been AD when Carroll left, for several reasons one being concern over Kiffen and the NCAA.

I believe Haden intentionally waited to fire him until after the season started, to guarantee that Kiffin couldn't try to convince the Freshman not to go to class on the first day and instead follow him to Savannah State.

I think Sark is a pretty good bet, imo. He was there for Kiffin's golden years (As was Kiffin for a time, but he's never been considered a great coach anywhere he's been). Sarkisian has the west coach ties for recruiting and obviously knows the PAC-12. He's done a pretty good job bringing Washington back up from the bowels that Ty left them in. He's not necessarily a big name hire, but he has the ties to USC and would fit the job.

I'm not sure why Del Rio has been on everyone's lips, but I guess he has connections with Haden. Maybe thats why? Strong would be an interesting hire, I don't think he goes though. He could wind up at Texas instead, I could see them going after Charlie. I don't think Petersen leaves Boise, he seems content there for now, but USC could change that. I've heard Franklin's name mentioned. Moral implications aside, which aren't his fault of course, I'm not sure Franklin would be a fit.

What top level coach wouldn't go to USC, given the fact he was reasonably available? Lots of resources plus A List celebrities to watch your practices, give pep talks and help your recruiting efforts. That's far from a comprehensive list and that's why I'm nervous.
On the other hand, hiring a coach can be a crapshoot. Guys who've shined elsewhere can come crashing down to earth, so fingers crossed.
I do seem to recall that Southern Cal expressed an interest in Lou Holtz after he left Notre Dame, but Lou said no thanks. As we all know, however, Lou is a rare individual.

Come on now, Bobby thought she was qualified for the job. Interesting side note.....I know someone who is a huge Razorback fan and he told me Petrino wasn't the one controlling the bike at the time of the accident.

If anybody has rivals you can read the article Gerlad Martinez posted on who they are looking at it's a good read. Even though the guy is a huge jackass(GM). I think Haden needs to hit a home run hire.

Just got off the phone with my younger brother. His friend who plays at USC told my brother that he was "glad" Kiffin got canned and that most of the players felt the same way.

Apparently Kiffin didn't go down without a fight.

According to Haden, the conversation between he and Kiffin after the team's arrival in Los Angeles lasted about 45 minutes. He told ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd that the talks were "honest."

"He battled me," Haden said. "… He really battled and made it very difficult. We had a very honest discussion for 45 minutes. At the end of the day, I felt the decision had to be made."

It's as if the Berlin Wall came down. I don't think I've ever seen so many different people collectively happy about a coach's firing before.
