Well, how real life works is that high school athletes come into college camps and their coaches from then on don't give a damm about how many stars somebody other than themselves gave them, but decide who plays based on what they see on the field vs men. We have no idea how far along Black is. Joe Alt far along? Great if true. Has nothing to do with HS star ratings, though.

^^^this. If Black was ready he’d be in the rotation at guard. You don’t start based off of stars or feelings.

Yup, MFMF has shown last year that he would start a true freshman at OL if he is ready. Obviously Black isn't there right now

I kind of see it differently. I'm not really sure Steve Elmer was flat better than Quenton Nelson in 2014, or that Tosh Baker and Michael Carmody were really better than Joe Alt at the beginning of 2021. I think most coaches understandably go with the guy with experience most of the time. Experience typically trumps young talent in a lot of head-to-heads when picking starters.

In 2021, neither Baker or Carmody were better than freshman Fisher, but he had a whole Spring to prove it (and Baker was simply not athletic enough). When Fisher went down, they both got shots before Joe Alt.

When the inexperienced are forced to come in, it's usually a rough start and they make a bunch of mistakes but they sometimes emerge as better than the guys who were in front of them. The coaches don't want to take the risk to find that out--I probably wouldn't either--but they don't "know" until the kid gets a chance.

I really don't think it's fair to lump Wagner in with Knapp. Wagner has a track record of solid performance. Knapp was one of the worst graded tackles in CFB last year and he only started due to circumstances. People assumed he would make a big jump from year 1 to year 2 because most linemen do. There is no film to suggest that he is a high level starter at tackle. It's all hopeful thinking and extrapolation.

The "broken link" of Tengwall comments doesn't fix the OLine problems by recommending new players or position shifts. He is rather all over Wagner and Knapp for soft play, not attacking their opponents, retreating as if scared, and thereby "setting way too soft edges" which lead to QB hurries and sacks. HOW Wagner and Knapp will cure their problems on the field rather than in theory is not given.
