I've seen him get out-coached too many times despite having so much more talent than the opposition (Navy, Tulsa, USF, Michigan, Pitt, AZ State, NW, Louisville....not to mention the amount of ugly wins we've had.....lost to Kiffin, lost to Sark in Steve's first year), for me to think he would excel in a league built on parity.

Not to sound like a pompous fan, but one of the issues with being a Pats fan is that you see a team that is coached as close to perfectly as possible on Sundays, so BK's mistakes and the team's sloppy play stands out way more than it should.

September 29, 2014. Pats vs. Chiefs.

Addazio and Wittingham are my two "really easy to get, probably a great coach/fit" candidates.

Wittingham has (reportedly) actively made overtures for each open job.

The other option is to just roll the dice with Jon Gruden. At worst, you're looking at two years of awesome recruiting while you survey other candidates.

Addazio would be a really good fit here. I despise BC, but he really is a great coach.

Would Gruden even be an option? I was under the impression that he has turned down many high profile jobs in the past few years.

I don't know if I'd call Weis an unmitigated disaster. He certainly helped move the program forward.

"Unmitigated" may be a bit too harsh, because neither Davie nor Weis left the cupboard bare for their successors (like Willingham did for Weis). But they both failed comprehensively.

In fact, if we do lose Kelly this year, we'll be lucky to get a coach of that caliber moving forward.

  • I never implied that Kelly's tenure has been a failure. At worst, he had one "lucky" season and few mediocre ones, all while building up the program from its nadir in 2009. There's no logical way to argue that we'd have been better off without Kelly.
  • Odds are very poor that Kelly's successor will be as good or better than him.

You are probably correct here, but the last six weeks have really made me question whether BK is all in on ND. I do not like the way he handled the adversity we have had at the end of this season. On several fronts, but specifically the way he has deflected criticism from himself on several occasions.

At this point, another coach full of enthusiasm for being the coach at UND, even if lesser talented than BK, may have more success.

No info, but yeah I think we could get him. Just a case of $$.

My concern is the negative publicity that ND has given itself over the drawn out suspensions this year. The whole topic was run through the mud so much by the media that I cannot imagine a successful coach remotely wanting to endure something like that. And the fact that ND self cannibalized itself, not the NCAA coming down really hurts things. I mean, why would a top coach want to deal with that crap?

Face it boys...ND is a dream job except for the fact that very quickly it turns into a nightmare over complete self induced BS.

Money is always an issue but I think it ultimately comes down to whether or not he has the desire to coach. He's going to get paid well whether he's working for ND or ESPN. The difference is that he'll have to earn every penny at ND.

He's in touch with the game of football but he hasn't coached a team or player in six years. That's a concern, in my opinion. Football is a fast moving game and it can move past even the best coaches. His staff would be another concern. Who is he going to hire? He'll have to assemble a staff quick and it won't be easy, that's for sure.

Dammit, apparently michigan's reaching out to David Cutcliffe. I was hoping for him to come to ND if Kelly left.

I'm down for this for a couple of reasons...

1. Pro Style offense

2. A FULLBACK!!!!!!!!!!!

and hes a monster recruiter

I can only agree with your last statement, I would rather keep the spread style offense but more running out of it!

I'll go ahead and cast doubt that BK is going to the NFL. I just don't see the fit and with him getting approval for a JUCO, I see him doing more work behind the scenes at improving ND's roster.

You could make an argument as to a guy like Bill O'Brien and even Chip Kelly for making the jump but I just don't see that with BK. I do admit that anything is possible and weirder things have happened.

I think staff changes are inevitable though.
