Tommy had significantly better QBs than Pyne for 2 years and he wasn't nearly as aggressive as Parker showed. Again, I realize it's the Spring game.

Our WR room has the most depth and talent that it's ever had, probably going back to before BK honestly. At best BK had maybe one really good WR in a given year, but in his 12 years I think only a few broke 1,000 yards. Long really stunk it up in WR recruiting those last two years. It's one of the reasons the position has struggled for awhile. There's a very good chance this will be a breakout year for our WRs given they're more experienced now and not just a bunch of underclassmen.

Yeah there was a lot of caution but people were optimistic because he had made such a great impression immediately as a position coach.

He had one year of experience as a position coach & obviously zero as a coordinator, and basically was Elko’s guy who stayed at ND and didn’t follow Elko because BK offered him the DC position, which many thought was lazy of BK at the time.

This. He's sticking to Rees' offense for the most part with some wrinkles thrown in. It's probably the smart move given it's the offense these young starters have been running for the last few years. They're poised to breakout, all Parker has to do is not stir the pot too much.

The difference between Rees/Lea and Parker is that both were considered "smart." Lea was retained and promoted for scheme continuity transitioning from Elko. Rees was promoted because BK believed in him.
Parker was a Plan D option because they couldn't get someone better. You could make a strong argument that Guidugli is more qualified than Parker to call the shots this year.

Parker could definitely be more aggressive than Rees, when it comes to pushing the ball vertically. They have the horses this year to do that.

He’s here because they tried everything to get someone better and couldn’t get out of their own way. Sometimes that ends up working out.
I know everyone wants to go deep, which is fine, but…
I hope ND doesn’t try to use their new shiny toy (Hartman) too much & forgets about what they are dominate at, running the ball with an elite OL.
Once teams stack the box, then ND can let Hartman loose.

They still interviewed a few others they chose Parker over after the Ludwig debacle.

Not saying I believe this but just a thought: maybe Clark benefited from Elko’s success? Elko is the real deal imo bc he’s repeated success several times and Clark rode a nice wave. It took Shaw several years to screw up what Harbaugh built and it’s going to take Day a couple more years to ruin Urban’s Ohio State. Freeman can ride the BK wave for a while or maybe he will be great. IDK. Freeman is a Wild West gamble from my pov. But I’m not sold on Clark Lea like I am Elko yet.

Plus, Elko was such a home run hire, and did so well in such a short time, that his endorsement of Lea as his unofficial protege went a looooooong way for most people.
Whereas BK/Rees were under a pretty steady stream of criticism for their offense, and Parker doesn’t even represent a continuation of the things that might have been universally approved of.
‘Elko —> Lea’ was an easy argument to make
‘Rees —> Parker’ shouldn’t have been a thing, period

Ok so I'm not saying Parker is Joe Brady or that Sam Hartman is Joe Burrow, but as an example, other than his short Saints Offensive assistant NFL stint, Brady basically came out of nowhere Joe Brady (American football coach, Wikipedia). Here's hoping... 🤞

Nobody's saying he couldn't end up being great, but arguing that he's a good hire at this point is a bit like buying a lottery ticket and calling it an investment. Hopefully he's our Brady, but as several others have said it feels like we might be getting the "Diet" version of an offense has already underperformed.
