I also have a big head and since all flat brim hats have high crowns I can't wear them without looking like Megamind

Not sure where to put this but I'm watching 2009 Washington ND. Insane that Charlie managed to bungle that roster. Offense was Clausen, Golden, Floyd, Rudolph and Armando Allen. Defense was suspect but you had players like freshman Teo and Harrison Smith. What a waste of talent. You can watch it and see all the signs of a poorly coached team.

I got into a 2009 rabbit hole a bit back. I forgot how absolutely infuriating the Navy game was. 10 of the 12 games were one possession games

Yes. Weis was one of the worst coaches in ND history.

Nah. He was a solid coach. The fat ass just knew nothing about S&C
Speaking of S&C, the season he got rolled into on the sideline and blew up his knee was so sad. I remember watching him slowly limp in to the tunnel, basically alone b/c everyone else had run in ahead of him, at halftime of a really lackluster loss at BC that year. Kinda summed up his last three years TBH.

So, no, he was not a good coach. Excellent offensive mind, and showed you could recruit elite talent to Notre Dame again. But there were big holes in his ability to lead a big-time college football program and he was not savvy or humble enough to hire people who could fill them.

Weis knew what he knew and struggled outside of that. His skill players were phenomenal. Some of that may have been his assistants like Bernie Parmalee who coached TEs and still coaches in the NFL today. I think John Latina did what he could with the OL, but they weren't our strongest OL units. In general poor recruiting by Willingham caught up to us in '07/'08 and left some growing pains for awhile. That '07 team was young, lot of underclassmen from Weis' first recruits on the field because of the Willingham holes. Fundamentally the defense tackled poorly, coverage was spotty at best.
Yes. Weis was one of the worst coaches in ND history.

He was far, far from perfect but he was much better than his predecessor and Weis didn't leave the cupboard bare for Kelly like Ty did for him.

He was very solid in recruiting and skill position development for certain. I think he helped move ND out of the dark ages in a few areas and get some athletes through admissions that weren't getting through under Boob Davie and Ty before. I think Kelly did more, like adding the training table, helping move away from grass, getting the video board and stadium updates, etc. Without Weis I don't know if we get Kelly, and Kelly helped set the table for Freeman to succeed in ways.

I was at the Big House in 2009 and I left the game so pissed off wondering how that lineup could lose to Tate fucking Forcier.

'09 was obviously his last change and the writing was on the wall right then and there. Dude just didn't get it done here.

Nice recap of some of the all-time games for each of this year's opponents. The October '88 (Miami) and October '05 (USC) are the top ND historical games for me! Notre Dame's Greatest Game Against Each 2025 Opponent
2007 Navy was the first time I swore in front of my parents as a kid. Head in hands at the end of the game I said "Fucking Charlie Weis" which is pretty hard to get mad at a 5th grader for saying when everyone was thinking it

I gave up on Weis after ND lost the Michigan game to Tate effing Frazier Week 2. That Michigan team went on to go 5-7. Just absolutely no business losing that game.

But the rest of the season was just as messy. Squeaking by a bad MSU team. Needing a miracle to beat a mediocre Purdue squad. Going to overtime against that Washington team. Losing the last 4 to end the season on a whimper.

Ugh.

Tate Forcier.

I can never forget how ND jumpstarted that dude's Heisman campaign that lasted all of 1 week.
