2007 Navy was the first time I swore in front of my parents as a kid. Head in hands at the end of the game I said "Fucking Charlie Weis" which is pretty hard to get mad at a 5th grader for saying when everyone was thinking it

Weis certainly shares some of the blame for '07, but it was always going to be a recipe for disaster with Willingham's lack of recruiting catching up with us. Half the offense that year was young guys, freshmen and sophomores that were inexperienced and fresh out of high school. Guys like Duval Kamara, Sam Young, among others and eventually a freshman Clausen taking over from THE Evan Sharpley. The defense wasn't as young, but aside from Zibby it was a bunch of guys Willingham recruited that were underdeveloped and lacked ability. The only one besides Zibby to get much NFL experience was David Bruton and he only started a handful of games over a 2 contract career. So we had a young, inexperienced offense paired with a defense that lacked stars and fundamentals. The fundamentals are on Weis, the lack of Jimmies and Joes was on Ty.

Coincidentally in looking back where those players are now I just saw that Maurice Crum Jr. is the LB coach for SMU, so that's cool. Maybe he can come home when we have an opening.

I thought that was Sam Mcguffie

 I can't see that name without remembering an early Youtube video of some kids. Sam's schtick was always flipping and hurdling people, and that's about all his claim to fame was as he never panned out after our game. These kids parodied him though, pretending to be Sam and jumping over random stuff in the park, always yelling "MCGUFFIE!" when they jumped, like they were Matt Damon in Team America. I can't find the video anymore unfortunately. All I've got is a clip of the real Sam flipping out.

Been thinking this all off-season. He flashed so much last year, and I bet he would’ve been a mid round pick at worst if he could have declared. The lack of buzz to me is wild, I thought he’d get some potential all-American recognition.

Pretty sure he was a Soph last year, so very possible he goes pro after this season, especially if he balls out again.

We’ve got some great kids in this program. This is my buddy’s team. My other buddy was Jack Kiser’s HC. I appreciate what this program is willing to do for the next generation of players who will never reach the career arc of playing at ND. Love to see it.

This looks more favorably to carr. Not sure what type of package you would have for CJ if Kenny is the starter. A package for Kenny though would be useful though

Willingham was definitely the MASSIVE factor, and you’re right about inexperience.

However, Weis absolutely butt fumbles the starting QB situation. He basically decided to install a read option offense for Demetrius Jones in like a week as some kind of surprise “schematic advantage” a week before the Georgia Tech opener.

Weis fucked up so much with the QBs that year. He should have either:
1, start Sharpley and let Jimmy get his feet wet, maybe even taking over through the season (or let Sharpley just take the pain as the QB for that awful team)
2, start Jimmy from day one with a very seasoned backup in Sharpley ready to come in.

He chose neither to start the year.

Ahhhh - The analysis of the after the fact In-Home experts. Weiss butt fumbles, Weiss fucked up so much.

Harsh AF words for a guy that did not do well but clearly knew much more about football than you and cared liked crazy about ND.

So fuckin’ what? He was a terrible head coach and if he really cared about ND he would’ve started after he was hired instead of waiting for the Patriots’ season to end. He also would’ve resigned when it was obvious he was in over his head.

There were coaches mentioning to ISD after the playoff run that Shuler was playing better than Watts. Dude is gonna be a problem for teams this fall

Dude you contributed next to nothing half the time. You just complain about other people’s takes.

The fact is he absolutely did mess up the QB situation that year. It’s well documented. I’m not revealing something new 18 years after the fact.

I think his plan all along was to start Clausen, but if I recall he had an issue with his elbow similar to CJ last year and so he didn't get in till later in the season. He definitely fouled up the QB position that year though, gotta wonder why Frazier was an afterthought, he ended up transferring and biting us in the butt later. QB issues were on Weis for sure as he had guys that had been in the program for at least a year or more and weren't completely lacking talent. The pieces around them in 2007 offensively were young and inexperienced, and that was a testament to Ty's poor recruiting catching up with us.

My contribution was that you had a crappy take by shitting all over Weiss. Acting in hindsight like you knew all along (much like SnD) is ridiculous. You're welcome to disagree, which clearly you do. Congrats.

Charlie Weis was a world-class offensive mind who massively screwed up his QB room in 2007, leading to the worst season of Notre Dame football in most of our lifetimes. Both can be true.

You remember where the program was under him? Because I certainly do. I was at all the home games that year we went 3-9 and the product on the field was embarrassing. It’s not a crappy take, it’s the truth.

Idk if you are Weis or maybe you were the pudding delivery boy he tipped well at halftime at Michigan State, but the fact that you think what I’m saying is a bad take… oooffff

Yeah I do remember the elbow thing. But that’s where you roll with Sharpley until he’s ready. Not half ass install an entirely new offense in roughly a week.

And of course Ty’s poor recruiting is absolutely a major factor, cannot be overlooked. Curious what happened behind the scenes at ND that made Frazier leave.
