Not sure where to put this but I'm watching 2009 Washington ND. Insane that Charlie managed to bungle that roster. Offense was Clausen, Golden, Floyd, Rudolph and Armando Allen. Defense was suspect but you had players like freshman Teo and Harrison Smith. What a waste of talent. You can watch it and see all the signs of a poorly coached team.
Weis knew what he knew and struggled outside of that. His skill players were phenomenal. Some of that may have been his assistants like Bernie Parmalee who coached TEs and still coaches in the NFL today. I think John Latina did what he could with the OL, but they weren't our strongest OL units. In general poor recruiting by Willingham caught up to us in '07/'08 and left some growing pains for awhile. That '07 team was young, lot of underclassmen from Weis' first recruits on the field because of the Willingham holes. Fundamentally the defense tackled poorly, coverage was spotty at best.
Yes. Weis was one of the worst coaches in ND history.
He was far, far from perfect but he was much better than his predecessor and Weis didn't leave the cupboard bare for Kelly like Ty did for him.
Nah. He was a solid coach. The fat ass just knew nothing about S&C
He was very solid in recruiting and skill position development for certain. I think he helped move ND out of the dark ages in a few areas and get some athletes through admissions that weren't getting through under Boob Davie and Ty before. I think Kelly did more, like adding the training table, helping move away from grass, getting the video board and stadium updates, etc. Without Weis I don't know if we get Kelly, and Kelly helped set the table for Freeman to succeed in ways.
