It's actually not a terrible article lol.

The reasoning is mostly sound, especially in highlighting the issues that ND had despite getting to 12-0.

They also give the appropriate credit in "ND didn't deserve to play in the championship game" and destroy that take, even in terms of Florida and UGA making arguments to getting in over ND.

They say that Florida, UGA, and Texas A&M would have beaten ND.

I disagree on Florida... they wouldn't have scored enough to win. I think a game against UGA would've been closer than 14 points, though I'm not sure if ND wins. I think A&M would have beaten ND be a few scores, by virtue of JFF running around and throwing to Mike Evans.

Can't hate on that article as much as I'd like to.

I am with Sea on this one. What's the point? It was 8 years ago. Why aren't we talking about the sports that are currently taking place?

Lol apparently it's a common joke/conversation starter on their podcast, so they decided to actually explore the idea.

But let's get back to the regularly scheduled sports programming... with a fight between the MLB owners and players.

Biggest issue with our 2012 team was our OC. Kelly promoted his buddy Chuck Martin to the position with the following background as a coach:

1992–1993 Mankato State (GA)
1994–1995 Wittenberg (LB)
1996–1997 Millikin (DC/DB)
1998–1999 Eastern Michigan (LB)
2000–2002 Grand Valley State (DB/OLB)
2003 Grand Valley State (DC/DB)
2004–2009 Grand Valley State
2010 Notre Dame (DB/RC)
2011 Notre Dame (S/RC)

Now maybe he was an offensive genius during his HC tenure at GVS but otherwise the guy had zero experience on the offensive side of the ball. Hell, he would have been an underwhelming DC hire. You give that 2012 team an above average OC and they would have been much better. Not Bama level but certainly not how they are perceived now. We had some weapons with:
Riddick
Wood
GAIII
T.J. Jones
Eifert
D. Danials

For me the Martin hiring was worse than the BVG hiring. At least Van Gorder had previous success.

That is a well done article. It is hard to argue with most of the points in there. 2012 was such a fun season (until the sacrificial killing) and it is nostalgia-inducing to read back through some of that stuff. I totally forgot Oklahoma was favored by 11.5 and ND held them to 15 yards rushing in that smackdown.

I think I agree with the conclusion too - that Alabama, A&M, and UGA would've beaten ND. I don't know about UGA by 2 scores, but they did have Gurley and Marshall. It could have been a close game then they wear the D down in the second half to win a closer-than-it-looks 2 score game. A&M was just too much with Manziel, Evans, and Snopes. They would have had 500 passing yards.

Swarbrick to ACC?

Jack is already 66. Considering Swofford is 71 and retiring next year after 20+ years on the job, I doubt the ACC would want a commissioner who won't even see the end of the first TV Network deal that he would sign. This is a good reminder though that relatively soon, ND will need to find a replacement for Jack.

At this point, I'm not even sure if he'll stay past Kelly, considering BK will be here through Buchner's years on campus.

Getting anxious about the season and what the attendance situation is going to be? I know this pandemic prevents looking too far out for making plans, but how long before leagues/teams/universities come out with a plan?

Ade getting love as a *potential* AA candidate is miraculous considering how much of project recruit he seemed to be.

He balled out in the second half of the season and has great athleticism off the edge. I'm really excited to see what he and a healthy Daelin can do.

Lea gets A LOT of love, and deservedly so! However, the real hero IMO is Elston.

Elston is a stud. He has done a great job flipping the script on the DL. We had a bit of a lull there after the Nix, KLM, Sheldon Day, Tuitt era.

unless we go ACC for the season

I was thinking the same thing, but is that even a viable option this close to the season?

It's not like it wouldn't benefit the ACC, they have had practically no one outside of Clemson the past couple of seasons. Miami in 2017, that's about it.

May ACC offers a life line in exchange for full membership.

Which should be a non-starter.

Honestly the ACC games should be safe, right? I doubt Navy backs out, and WMU should probably want to keep the game and payout.

I'd worry about losing the Wisconsin, Stanford, SC, and Arkansas games. Maybe it's worth calling the other academies as Army and Air Force play Oklahoma and Purdue (respectively). Then you'd only need to replace 2 other games.

Don’t forget BYU is an independent also and would be a quality opponent for both schools.

I think the ACC thing would probably happen if the rubber hits the road. The ACC administrators are not message board fans who are going to bark "too bad, join a conference!" They still have a relationship with Notre Dame in every other sport and a working relationship with Jack Swarbrick personally. They see the financial gain that comes with the ND deal. Swofford in particular I think would want to accommodate us rather than risk a crack in his crown jewel just as he's leaving.

What would be really interesting is contractually, what happens if we ""join the ACC"" for only one year and then schedule home games? ESPN and NBC can both make the case they should have the rights.

Furthermore, does this fulfill the requirement in the contract that ND would be forced to join the ACC if they did join a conference? Therefore allowing ND to court other conferences for the next contract.
