Wonder if this will cause the 'Domino' effect.

Next domino would be the Patriot League followed by some of the other FCS leagues. They don't make any money on football anyway. Just a little gate receipt money which is already almost certainly zero.

After that, there's no telling. But most schools are really going to be financially strapped this fall so if football doesn't generate cash it'll be on the chopping block.

If there is a Domino effect do the individual schools become independent for the season. What's stopping ND negotiating a one off game with Harvard in November for example.

All of the ND haters will be thumping their chest, yelling how we should have gotten off our pedestal and joined a conference.

I haven't been on the board long enough to know/see/remember, but I am sure it has been discussed a lot before. But, if ND were to join a conference (forget the ACC Contract for a second) what makes the most sense, and where would you like to see us go.

I don't hate the idea of the ACC, Clemson, Miami, FSU, PITT...et. al, is a pretty decent conference. However I think the Big10 makes the most sense both regionally and recruiting wise. Play an 8 game conference schedule and 4 game non con (Stanford, USC, Navy, Team X).

I see both sides of the argument, however times change, the game, playoffs, the CFB playoff committee, data points. I don't know just some early AM thoughts.

Location wise, Big 10 makes sense. Even though I hate Michigan and Ohio State.

However, recruiting wise, I'd say ACC. FSU and Miami are in SEC country, Pennsylvania is a hot bed too.

ACC would also be an easier schedule.

Some arguments against:

  • The B1G is almost entirely constituted by huge state-funded research schools. Aside from geographic proximity, it's not a good fit for us.
  • ND is one of the few (if not the only) truly national CFB programs. Joining the B1G would regionalize us in ways that the administration is likely trying to avoid.
  • F*ck Michigan.

(EDIT: If their hands were tied) I would really like them to join the ACC for the points mentioned above: A slightly more manageable schedule, gets us recruiting footholds outside of the MW, Fu*k scUM and the B1G etc.

It would also be pretty cool to rekindle the rivalries with BC, Pitt and Miami (FL), and seeing FSU, VT and Clemson on a more regular basis. I wouldn't mind adding a Purdue/Michigan State rotation as one of our non-conference opponents.

1-8 = ACC conference Games
9 - USC
10 -Navy
11 - Year A: Stanford / Year B: NW
12 - Year A: Purdue/ Year B: Michigan State

Play the odds that most years NW and Purdue would be the worse of the two at 11 and 12 which will keep the 3rd and 4th non-conference match ups respectable and manageable.

The only correct answer is Big Ten West. That way I get to see them in Iowa City every other year. Plus it's an easy division.

ND's schedule would be so boring moving forward if we joined any Conference. But I could also see it may needing to happen sometime in the future.

I know I am in the minority on this but I think a conference schedule makes it more exciting. It isn't playoffs or bust every year. You can win the conference even with a loss or two. Plus new rivalries will develop. Other than USC I don't really care about keeping any of the other rivals on the schedule.

I enjoy playing new teams and getting the team to travel the country. ND is national

Could still play new teams if the other rivals are dropped. Just keep USC (and Navy if you must) and there are still a couple free slots every year for Texas or The U or whatever.

So as of now, we would be looking at 6 games for sure. Navy is essentially a lock it appears, so 7. I would have to believe Western MI would want that pay day, potentially 8. I honestly doubt we will see USC or Stanford this year. So at most, we would need 2-4 more depending on whether or not we go with 10 or 12. I would assume 10 is the way to go similar to the conferences.

Seems feasible. Miami FL is playing Sparty, so they are already down a game.

Kind of my point, I could see us being "forced" to join one. Most of our sports are affiliated with the ACC except Hockey I think, who is in the Big 10.

For selfish reasons mostly, I think the Big10 makes sense, but I would be fine with the ACC as well. It would make the conference stronger forsure.

Yep. Thinking they'll move it to spring before August, and then announce that it's getting canceled in October.

Pat Forde doesn’t think spring will happen. Big 10 would probably object since there would be games in February.

Lou Holtz speaking his peace on Fox News right now about football happening this year (as well as some general stuff). Also commented on the stupidity of folks calling to get rid of the "Fighting Irish" nickname, and commented briefly on the death of his wife.

Damn, missed that she passed away. Lou always glowed when speaking about his wife.

Can't imagine that a spring schedule, even an abbreviated one would work for several reasons.

1. Players are playing two seasons pretty close together, with not a lot of time to recuperate.
2. Players that are seniors might sit out spring to avoid injury and risk getting drafted.
3. Some juniors who already have thoughts of declaring after the coming season may opt to sit it out.
4. Rosters could be significantly reduced with a lot less depth if #1 and #2 happen.
5. B1G teams like Wiscy. Minn, Iowa, scUM and Nebraska don't want to be playing in February.
6. Games in February would probably have very low attendance. Schools need the revenue.

Could a push for a spring season be to avoid the scholarship issues they already have for the fall sports that were cancelled?
