I sort of get the possibility of THAT part of it of course, but that surely means that Auburn itself is in, and so something else must happen to Clemson (very unlikely), OSU or Wisconsin both stinking it up somehow (I think unlikely), and Oklahoma screwing up. I still see Clemson, Auburn locks in that scenario, and a B1G lock, leaving us with hoping the BIG-12 is really screwed up. This scenario also doesn't negate Georgia having only the Auburn loss, and being 12-1 with a head-to-head win for the second SEC.

So, though I'd be delirious with this, the 60% "win" odds seem pretty Pollyanna.
I think the Auburn winning out includes their regular season match up vs Georgia and the conference championship game vs GA/whoever comes from the East. It's the only way I can make sense of them helping ND's odds.

I'm not on board with battered fan syndrome folks. ND is a CFP level team - they pass the eye test. Every year we joke about SEC teams moving up in the rankings after losses in some circular reference error but for some reason we can earn respect losing to UGA? And the battered fan refuses to follow the money - CFP needs fresh meat and nobody brings the eyeballs like ND. Those in charge want ND in to double ratings - the SEC circle jerk is not good for wider viewership.

Fix the offense and sky is the limit. Yes other people need to stumble for us to have a chance but that is the cost of losing. There are maybe 8 teams that "look" like CFP candidates - we are one of them. Book finds another gear, better answer at RB, establish some more WR playmakers (we know we have them).... and that is just offense - LBs settling on D could be huge. TONS of upside potential over the next two months - UGA is lucky to play us early. This is not your 2012 Irish.

Is this because Auburn winning out would probably knock out Georgia and Bama from the race?

UGA, Bama AND LSU

If Auburn wins out, they would have beaten UGA twice. Once in the regular season, and once in the SEC Championship game.

So the only thing keeping ND out would be chaos in the Big XII, which might be 60% likely? Best case scenario is Texas and Oklahoma play twice and split the results.

I hate that Iowa State plays @OK one week before TX comes to Ames. If not for being scheduled this way I would really like ISU over TX and strongly doubt a 0-2 run against those two. As is, bodes well for both to avoid the upset.

Good mid-season breakdown of the six remaining opponents. I haven’t been paying attention b/c Navy is 5-1 w/ a good offense & a good defense. I thought VT was a dumpster fire but they are 5-2. Who knew Stanford would be the only remaining opponent w/ a sub-.500 record?

https://www.si.com/college/notredam...ootball-opponent-preview-final-six-opponents/

Don't let VT fool you. They are really, really bad 5-2 football team.
- 7 pt win over Furman
- 35 pt drubbing at home against Duke
- Took all of 4 quarters to beat ODU by 14 at home
- 5 OT win over UNC, who has some gritty fight in them but the uninspiring wins at home, and a blowout loss to Duke, should say all you need to know about these guys.

But the rest of November, BC always gives us their best shot, but I expect the emotions of Senior Day will have the boys ready to roll, Duke has been up and down this year but they can score when they get a rhythm going, and Navy is going to be Navy against us.

Stanford still gives me pause simply because of the voodoo of the Farm, which seems silly because on a neutral field field ND would roll 2019 Stanford. Still expect the Irish to win that one handily this year, but I digress.

That Va Tech/N.C. game was entertaining. But it was basically two bad teams failing over and over. Tech used three QB's with Quincy Patterson playing from the 3rd Qtr on. He's a 250 lb battering ram who thru about 3 passes. Missed FG's by both sides in OT were kind of comical. Mack Brown accidentally iced his own kicker, after running three plays to the right from the right hash. And..you guessed it...wide right.

Yeah I was actually watching this one leading up to the scUM / State Penn kickoff and it was ugly yet entertaining. Thought that ball taht Patterson threw on 4th down to extend the game was a beaut.

Both offenses and kickers were terrible. Not sure how I feel about that new mandatory 2 pt. conversion in the 5th OT, but I'm sure they're just trying to avoid the games going on forever like TA&M and LSU did last year.

This week's prediction from 247 Sports -

Camping World Bowl

Where: Orlando, Fla.
Projected matchup: Notre Dame vs. Texas
Quick bite: Primarily an ACC-Big 12 spot, the Camping World Bowl will make a serious play for Notre Dame since the Irish will be out of the New Year's Six (most likely) and available here. That leaves an array of Big 12 teams behind potential 1-2 finishers Oklahoma and Baylor. An Irish-Longhorns tilt would be a grand slam for all involved parties.

Here's my annual football majors post. This year’s is shorter, since both the freshmen and sophomores are now designated as being in First Year of Studies. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t true a few years ago when I started doing this. The juniors are a mix of having a declared vs. undeclared major within their college.

As much as I want to believe that ND athletes work harder academically than most of their contemporaries, we can’t deny that there seem to be certain “easier” majors that they tend to end up in. Hopefully those majors are still rigorous and prepare these players for real jobs.

From Pete Sampson regarding ND’s NY6 chances:

Thinking through what has to happen for Notre Dame to rise in the CFP Poll enough to make the Cotton Bowl, it’s probably safe to start scouting Orlando hotels.

Notre Dame needed help to get high enough for a New Year’s Six bid and it’s not getting any of that help.

I understand that somebody has to come in second in the ACC, but given that team may well not be ranked (and may well have lost to us), I do not understand why that team would bump a 10-2 Notre Dame from the Orange Bowl.

I agree, that should have been negotiated better when we first made the agreement with the ACC. As it stands now, the Orange takes a true ACC team and we do not count, whereas we count in all of their other bowls. Maybe the ACC wouldn't budge on that. But now there's no way we pass all the "at large" Big 10 and SEC teams ahead of us that won't already be spoken for in the other NY6 bowls. That leaves only 1 more at large spot since the best group of 5 team (Memphis) will go to the Cotton. Meaning, hope the boys like Orlando.

Right. The whole point of our deal with the ACC, at least when it comes to football, is bowl access. Here we'll get boxed out of an NY6 bowl by them, quite possibly for either Virginia or Va. Tech, both of whom we defeated. It's ironical, at least.

For some reason I'd thought there was some minimum rank needed to make an NY6, like 16th or something? But I guess not?

Either way I agree it's not easy to see us climbing ahead of the various teams in front of us to make the top ten, which is what we'd need for the Cotton, right? But there's still a fair bit of football to be played and most of the teams between #10 and us have at least one likely loss on their schedule. Except for Florida, which would leave us 11th.

Yep, I sat down and made a chart to break it down because I have nothing better to do. 15 teams will be ahead of us in this upcoming CFP rankings (Minnesota passed us). Bold and underline currently means they are spoken for in either the CFP, Rose or Sugar (bowls we can't get into). The rest will be eligible for 2 spots: Orange (Big 10/SEC/ND) or Cotton (at large) spots. The number next to a conference means the number of teams that need to be bold/underline in order for us to make it. One of the SEC or Big 10 must have all 5 teams taken care of. A team can become bold/underline by moving behind us in the rankings. Some of these are just my projections of course.

SEC (4 or 5)
LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Auburn

Big Ten (4 or 5)
Ohio State, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State

Pac 12 (2)
Oregon, Utah

Big 12 (2)
Oklahoma, Baylor

ACC (1)
Clemson

This is using my projection of LSU, Ohio State, Clemson and Oregon for the CFP. Rose would be Utah vs. Minnesota. Sugar would be Alabama vs. Oklahoma

Good chart.
So, yeah, if favorites hold serve (big if, obvs), Michigan and Penn State both lose to OSU, Wisconsin loses to Minnesota (or vice versa) and that takes care of the Big Ten.
Oregon making the playoffs actually helps us, b/c PAC 12 only takes the Rose Bowl and Utah isn’t in the at-large mix (tho a loss in the PAC-12 title game might drop them behind us anyway, I suppose).
Oklahoma beats Baylor and the Big 12 gets its one slot and that’s all.
We can probably jump all those losers except maybe maybe Penn State.
But then there’s the SEC. Auburn’s probably done with a loss to Bama, but if Georgia gives LSU a tough game in the SEC Championship they’d probably stay ahead of us. And Florida only has two games left - at Mizzou and Florida State - and should be strong favorites in both.
So we’re gonna need some help. Go Tigers.

Just beat Navy next please.

Exactly. It's nice thinking ahead to possible bowl games, and ND making the Cotton Bowl would be fine by me since I live in Dallas. But ND still needs to win three games, and do it one at a time.

Don't doubt that the Orange Bowl folks are fretting having UVA instead of ND for their game.
