Why quibble over Jaylon and Manti? Take them both. The real question is who would the third linebacker be to go along with those two?

I’d say it’s fair to say Manti was the better college player while Jaylon was the better pro prospect and will have the better pro career.

I say Jaylon because Manti was a no show against Bama and brought unnecessary drama to the team with #GirlfriendGate. Also, Manti was a dickhead socially.

Jaylon runs laps around Manti, athletically.

Jaylon had to deal with arguably the worst DC in Notre Dame history. I can only imagine his stat lines and production if he played under Lea.

Yes, Manti had a better ND career. If both go to Bama, Clemson, LSU, Georgia or OSU in the same class, Jaylon has the better career.

If they both came into Lea's 2020 class, Jaylon would have the better career.

And Manti would still be great.

Coney. Is that even a question? (I guess maybe Tranquil? But Coney.)

There’s no question Jaylon is more athletic, and will likely have a better pro career, and it’s too bad he didn’t play for a better DC. But when you look at what they actually accomplished on a football field for Notre Dame, it’s hard to see how you don’t pick Te’o.

Even IF Charlie & his staff hadn't have laid the biggest recruiting egg in ND history and offered/landed Luke Kuechly, the answer to your question is Bob Crable.

Holy shit, some of you guys are hook line and sinker on "eye test".

Jaylon was elite. Manti was an all timer. I'd without a doubt take him on any and every college team before Jaylon.

The athletic has it right.

Nope...NO WAY! I really liked Manti. Buy I would take your post and switch the names. And I don't think it's really that close.

I think Tranquill would be my 3rd LB with Te'o at Mike and Jaylon at Buck.

Coney was excellent, but I think between him and Te'o, you're limiting yourself athletically. Tranquill was all over the place and would dominate at Rover next to Manti and Jaylon.

Agree with both. I think that is a very fair assessment.

Yes, Yes, and No.

Jaylon flashed all of the time because he was a freak athlete and a great tackler. But just being a freak doesn't make you the GOAT (Jaylon was elite, BTW, I'm not saying he was overrated).

Manti was an absolute heat seeking missile his senior year. When he hit you you stopped, and he hit you on almost every play. Add being a captain, 6 INTs (holy cow), and making the entire middle of the field from hash to hash a "no man's land" was something I'd take over Jaylon every time.

I get that people won't all agree on this because we're discussing two all-time greats. But man, I knew Jaylon would come out and make a great play from time to time, and quite often. But literally anytime a team ran anywhere other than directly to the sidelines my reaction was "haha, watch this".

Manti had great instincts, but he didn't have the closing speed that Jaylon had. Jaylon could run down guys he had no business running down. He was definitely the better athlete, but Manti probably had more football IQ/intuition.

No one likes to credit "intangibles" it seems, but I've rarely seen any player with the "intangibles" of Manti Teo. I mean WAY over the top. People not getting that either weren't yet clued into ND football, or have very poor memories.

Having said that, there was one better linebacker: Luke Kuechly.
.... sideline to sideline plus the finest psychic first-man-moving instincts I've seen.

Agree. Maybe the best thing Weis ever did was go all in on Manti. Helped not only with the 2012 undefeated season but has continued to pay dividends with our mini Hawaii pipeline. Not sure we get the kids we have gotten without that Polian/Weis effort.

Nice of Jon Tenuta to focus on Dan Fox instead of Luke Kuechly when St. X played St. Ignatius, great football mind.

not even close, hamilton

To be fair, Hamilton is being used in a role tailored to his strengths while Jaylon had to come in as a full timer instead of a super sub who was deployed judiciously.

That said, Kyle Hamilton received an incredible amount of hype during camp and has somehow actually exceeded expectations. I have been pleasantly surprised by how reliable he's been coming downhill and in run support.

Folks please note this post. Koon is correct on this one.

I think you gotta give Tony the talk that this bowl prep and next year are going to be for the next generation of RB's at ND. Give him 10-15 carries and then move on with the position group in the off-season. If he chooses to stay and we don't need spots then his leadership will be welcome but this can't turn into 2 years of Tony Jones slugging around the backfield.

I don't think Tony is thaat bad, and would like him as a no. 3 option. I rate him higher than C'Bo and Jahmir, and probably Jafar although who knows how good a healthy Jafar is. C'Bo runs hard, but honestly has extremely minimal talent. We keep talking about what a natural RB Jahmir is, but he doesn't flash very often to me. I'd like to see what Kyren can do, and obviously Tyree, next year. But if we gave C'Bo or Jahmir the same amount of carries as Tony had, I don't think they would have had 4 or 5 100 yard games.
