I don't really understand journalism.

What is the point of "breaking" a story when you can't even say what the story is. I just don't get it. I understand not revealing your sources, but why say anything at all?

Exactly. It's annoying. Nobody wants to sit and wait a day or two for bad news. Just keep the shit to yourself.

What is the journalist gaining professionally?

I suppose maybe if he ends up being "right" then he gains some credibility but what if someone beats you to the story or what if people just get mad at you?

So I suppose the point is to get more attention so that he will get the bump when the story breaks as opposed to fighting everyone when they all break at once.

Just don't think of the ND writers as journalists anymore...

Their job is to generate discussion and clicks as much as it is to deliver actual news and information.

Writing about a football program isn't the same as writing "the news" anymore, at least for the ND-centered websites. The closest you'll get is the beat writers for actual newspapers.

Generating discussion on IE isn't helping him at all. He isn't generating any clicks from anyone who isn't a member either.

As in he will have an article ready before everyone else does? How does that change if he just doesn't say anything to the public? He would still be first to the punch when the news breaks.

Just don't get it.

No, but people will look to his twitter feed specifically because everyone will wait for Coach D to break the story.

Right, but he's generating discussion and clicks at his place of business.

Rather than waiting for it to break and posting one thing, he can hint at it before it happens and post two or even three things.

Not to mention, it's a ploy to say "hey, we had the info and let you know it was coming." It's all about business, not actual news.

These guys are no longer "journalists." They're too invested in the business and competition, and they're homers lol.

I would guess injury.

Actually, I think you may be on to something.

Maybe it has to do with the rash of injuries, and expert professional recommendations.

Not only would this explain not being pissed off (relative to vacating victories,) but it would explain the part about 'raising questions' really well!

And maybe the reason Driskell wants to wait is because he wants details of a report, yet to be published or delivered. But he wants to be able to stay out front as the one that broke the news.

ND, UC, WashU, Army, Navy & Johns Hopkins have joined the Ivy League.

Kinda scary. No team has dominated the Irish like Chicago. 0-4 against the Maroons

Driskell stated it's something that he doesn't think too many people will be upset about, but he thinks it's going to generate a ton of question more than anything else. My guess is it's vacating victories and/or scholarships due to frozen 5.

BREAKING: ND Student/Athletes are no longer permitted to have waffles at University functions due to their tie-in with booster site IRISH ENVY and their use of them regarding recruiting prayer threads.

UPDATED: The use of Spider-Man memes is no longer permitted as well

I think vacating victories would classify as something people would be upset about. Schollies? Probably not so much so long as it was minimal for the reasons you said anyway.

Vacating victories would definitely piss me off.

I'm with Ndaccountant. Vacating victories would piss me off. Schollies I could handle, it's not like we don't self impose reductions each year anyway.

its just like reggie bush getting his heisman taken back or usc vacating the wins...EVERYONE remembers them happening....but i guess seeing your responses i guess people would be upset...i could care less

I'm with you Panda. I am just curious as to why vacating wins is such a big deal. It doesn't really bother me at all - let's win the next game...

per rivals---"As a staff we discussed this and all felt it was appropriate to respect the wishes of those we spoke with, but also felt it was best to give people a head's up that something was coming once the news was confirmed in hopes of creating a level of expectation that would ideally temper the reaction a bit"-driskell

Honestly that's kind of fair, but I personally, to everyone, would prefer 'shut it unless you've giving something'.

Sounds like Elmer maybe?

Maybe, but who would have questions about that? The comment 'it's going to raise some questions' doesn't strike me as Elmer. If Elmer were to hang it up, my response would be thank you, see you later.

More confused now. This makes it sound more "serious" than I thought it might be. Like unexpected players leaving.

So dumb lol.

They aren't trying to temper anything. They're teasing their info and playing the game.
