I said it a while back, but is probably buried in a pile of sadness posts. I’ve heard very good things about him. On paper, this is a great hire.
If ND plays a different NIL game than the rest, they must be elite in terms of identifying talent and doing so early, to win the relationship game. Winning over the kids who are only about NIL won't happen. But is possible to win over the kids that, while still valuing NIL, may take a more balanced approach.

Sounds like people in the industry think very highly of him.
Something I originally posted on ISD when this was announced: his time in the NFL aligns with the tenures of two well-regarded scouting GMs, Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore, and Rick Smith out of Houston (before he left to care for his ailing wife). If those guys thought enough to give him a job, then I'm very optimistic about this hire.

I thought this guy was more scouting lower level college players for transfers and less high school scouting. Remember they told us it was safeties coach who found rhode island transfer and brought to staff. Need someone just rifling through the fcs group of 5 schools looking for these proven 4 and 5 stars who we have shown a willingness to pay.

O’Leary found him because until now there was no such scout after bill Rees left

Hopefully ND and Jack help Matt Jansen by giving him a boost in staffing.

No excuse for ND to not have one of the most robust recruiting & scouting staffs in the country.

I know some people are saying ND needs to make the college playoff this year to be successful but I disagree. Here is how I see things playing out. 11-1 depending who the loss is too we still make the playoff based off our schedule. 10-2 with a new years 6 bowl and a win would still be a huge season in year 2 for Freeman. ND should be 4-0 going into the game against Ohio State. I like the matchup against Ohio State only because they don't have a QB that is going to bail them out this year. I'm not concerned about Clemson the toughest part of that matchup is going on the road. USC is a toss up for me because with Hartman we win last years game. I think going on the road at Duke is game that will be tough because their program is turning things around.

If ND wins the games they should always win they win 9. It’s the USC, Clemson, OSU games that make the season. Win 2 out of the 3 that matter and win all the games you should win and that is a success.

But even so, I could live with a loss versus a duke if we win two out of three. I think it’s more important to win most of your marquee games then it is to wet the bed one time.

This is an impossible task, IMO. And only one player listed there won the Heisman. I love Julian Love, but what's he doing here haha. Read up on your ND history!

Paul Hornung? John Huarte? Johnny Lujack? Angelo Bertelli? Leon Hart? You could make an argument for Q Nelson....ND has too much history, and this tweet wreaks of recency bias only going back to the 70s with Montana.

Could argue Jaylon Smith was better than Manti over the longevity of their careers. Chris Zorich? Justin Tuck? I could go on and on.

Jaylon was the better athlete, but Manti was the total package. He was the leader and the QB of that defense. The staff tried to get Jaylon to take a more vocal role and be that kind of leader to align the defense, but he just wasn't that guy. It's one of the reasons Joe Schmidt saw the field and was the one running the D. The only black mark on Manti's career was the whole scandal where he got played. If that never happens I think he's on everybody's Top 5.

As far as recency bias, you're absolutely right. Those players they listed were all great in their own right. I love the Bus, Rocket...Joe had a decent college career, but was definitely more well known for his Pro days. Hard to leave some of the other Heisman guys off the list though.

I love Jaylon, but Manti was much better over the longevity of their careers.
Jaylon had 284 total tackles, 1 INT, 4.5 sacks.
Manti had 437 total tackles, 7 INT, 8.5 sacks.
And obviously Manti had the historic year that might never be matched again.

Manti also played 4 years to Jaylon’s 3. And Jaylon’s soph and junior years also had BVG. Imagine Jaylon in Elko or Lea’s defense.

As great of an athlete as he was, I'm trying to remember if Jaylon had an iconic moments...
Like for Manti there were the goal line stands against Stanford and USC in 2012, and the two INTs against Michigan in an emotional game. The pick against Oklahoma was a game changer too. I don't know if I can recall any big moments for Jaylon...short of the knee injury sadly. To be fair I had three kids by 2015 though, so I was a lot busier than I was in 2012 and probably didn't watch replays as much

Little dusty at the 3:40 mark.

Jaylon was a great athlete and fun to watch but he didn't really play for great or memorable teams, which (barring a Heisman a la Tim Brown) is kind of what you need to make this list. It's a high bar.

Add another year & it still isn’t close.
Manti’s stats were doubled of Jaylon, even 7 times for INTs.
And Manti lead the team through all adversity, even with offenses averaging like 20 ppg.
Manti changed the program trajectory.
