Yeah it was the same at my college as well. I remember getting in a wreck in a parking lot when the local had come in and I was starting to go out...we both slid on the ice and the cop put it 100% my fault (we crashed head to head). Go figure. It was literally inside the parking lot not on the street.

My experience in life has been most cops just suck. Im not saying there are not good cops but most are pretty much assholes that love the power. I mean, why the heck else would you take a job getting paid peanuts to risk being shot at if it wasnt for the power trip?

I knew a guy in college that I used to compete bodybuilding with. Broke his girlfriends nose once and beat her pretty good a second time. When we worked together bouncing at the bar, he would break up fights with his fist. This guy became a city police officer.

Im sure there are SOME good men that are police officer. Just in my years, I havent met any.

How does late-night bar detail work for cops in SB?

In my area, late-night bar detail on the weekends for the local police is a voluntary, overtime thing. Sometimes the cops working are the regular guys on third shift, but most of the time it's guys in their "secondary" uniforms, doing it for extra cash.

I've been flat-out told that guys will pick up the overtime because of the "pay," but really because it gives them some time outside of their normal duties where they wait for interesting stuff to go down. Essentially, they know drunk dudes are gonna be stumbling out of the bar, and they know things escalate, and they're actively choosing to go into those situations.

Basically, what I'm saying, is that there are some crappy cops out there, that I know of for sure, that take these details because it might offer a chance for them to flex their muscles.

Could this be one of those cases?

Those who went to school at ND and have lived in SB have referenced their beliefs that SBPD has it out for students. I have always kept that in the back of my head. Maybe it will be brought out here?

I don't think it's just a students thing. Back when I lived in SB in the 90's the police had a poor relationship with the community as a whole.

I would disagree. I would venture to say that you have met MANY crappy police officers or knew of them but you own personal bias toward cops allowed you to blow it off or think them just the very rare exception. Think about it. Maybe it will sink in

It seems as I got older, I met more cops that treated as a real citizen. When I was a kid, I got pulled over and yelled at several times when I shouldn't have been. I also got pulled over, yelled at, taken home and had my Dad yelled at on the front porch because I was a minor out drinking. Best thing that could have happened for me.

As I entered my 30s, cops felt that they could talk to me and just did their job when we came in contact. Once I became 40, I started knowing cops and made them my friends. I don't think they are abusive, they do complain about it being a crap job and work hard to get promoted to get off the streets.
I have always been a yes sir no sir guy and knew that a cop actually held your future in his hands, so I never even took a chance at being a d1ck and always said thanks for my ticket.

I am a 54 year old white guy who feels that when you are being questioned by authority you have to know they are not your friend and know that it should never be your fault to piss them off. Its the nature of the beast, they can really ruin everything for you.
So my post is a mixed bag and life with cops is a mixed bag.

There's an old story that is SO true:

A man is looking for a place to settle and start his life over. As he enters a town he sees an older gentleman sitting on a bench and stops to talk with him. He asks the old man what the people in this town are like. The old man asks him what the people were like in the town he came from and the traveler tells him that they were all nice, hard-working, honest, friendly, good people. The old man tells him, "You'll find the people here to be the same."

A few hours later another guy looking for a fresh start and a new town to live in stops to ask the old man about the people in this town. The old man again asks, "What were the people like in the town you come from?" The guy replied that they were the worst people he'd ever known; rude, nothing but drunks & liars, dishonest cheats, lazy, and the most unfriendly, unkind people in the world. Like some of these youth that complain about treatment from police...yet run around gangbanging and hanging with the wrong crowds.

I mean, what do you expect? If you hang with bad people, cops are going to assume you are a bad person and should be treated as such. Most of the cases that involved the highly publicized police shootings involved people with lengthy criminal records who had histories of being up to no good. Marcellus Wiley made a great point last night on the Undefeated: You live by the gun, you die by the gun.

You live a life of crime or hang with those that do, you may find yourself in some very bad situations.

Flip side of that is that cops who act like asses, have now convinced everyone that all cops are asses. So we have this blackhole of violence and prejudice between police and young people.

Not really familiar with situations like this, but would a high profile athlete be able to sue a police office for defamation in an instance like this if proven the charges were fabricated?

Now that we have turned this thread into an open discussion of our prejudices, I wonder if we have any new information.

My question is, is the prosecution in the Focus Five moving forward with any charges against anyone other than the driver (Ashton White, speeding) and Max Redfield.

If Max did have the pot, and the gun, as many surmised, and had them concealed, would anyone else be guilty of the charges filed? And even if they were technically guilty, would the University pursue additional punishment, in this Year of Mercy?

I don't think so because the article said the cops "responded to the Linebacker" for a fight between some patrons and bar security but were told bar security had already broken up the fight so officers went outside. I would assume that means they were on duty and in uniform.

Plus, I have a couple friends that are cops and they both work the day shift and then also work at a couple of the local bars. In their case, they where street clothes and not a uniform when at the bar. They do it for the extra money (one does it to flirt with a lot of the drunk girls). Not sure if all bars are that way though.

Best thing for all would have been that the cops wore body cams for their protection against accusations, to prove their case, or to assist the D.A. in prosecution. Other than that, there are just witnesses with the girlfriend and TH's fiance who are willing to write to the SBT. More?

This will play out.

But, seriously, I want to know where we would stand in the Fulmer Cup if charges were dropped against any or some of the alleged defenders. Will we still have the cachet of ranking ahead of all the SEC schools? Those guys always have someone involved in local bar fights. South Carolina has a notorious bar. Auburn, LSU have seen their share. Bama only has players sitting in a park.

I've known good cops and seen bad cops but there is no way you can just paint all of them with one brush, even in a department with some bad eggs.

I was familiar with one back in NJ, huge effer, ugly as sin but always had women hanging all over him and tossed around money like candy, way above the pay grade of the local police in that area. A *lot* of cops in that area were involved in the drug trade, it was a known fact.

There's one that lives around the corner from me who was suspended and separated from his wife after beating her up. He was eventually reinstated, they reconciled and evidently he's been a solid citizen ever since.

Another lives on the street behind me named Mike, solid citizen, neighbor and no one has ever had a bad word to say about him. His neighbor has a young daughter with epilepsy and one time injured herself badly. He was off duty but got on his radio and made sure help arrived ASAP.

My better half's one cousin is a retired cop, not a blemish on his record.

My best friend's brother became a cop in Maryland after serving in the navy back in the 80's. He'll be retiring soon without a single complaint filed against him.

My nephew joined his local police force after multiple tours in Iraq with the USMC during Iraqi Freedom. Not your stereotypical clean cut cop but he wouldn't harm a fly if he didn't have to.

There are good ones, there are bad ones but the truth can be said about pretty much any vocation. Police are in the public eye more now though with some of the turmoil going on between them and citizens in some areas and sometimes people get tunnel vision. Sometimes it seems you hear more about the bad than the good that they do.

There was a video going around on facebook where cops were pulling cars over because "it was too hot to be driving without an ice cream cone" or something like that and they were giving people ice cream. Great positive story but never saw it anywhere but facebook.

Stephen Pinker's written quite extensively about this. People vastly overestimate how much bad stuff is going on in the world today. This is just as true of police conduct as it is of terrorism and crime and war.

Fact is, unless you live in Syria or western Iraq, today's a better time to be alive than any in human history.

He wasn't just suspended, he was expelled.

Athlete or not it was a ridiculous punishment.
