Fatal shooting Charleston SC

Zuckerburg was in Charleston this weekend. He had a nice FB post. The things he mentions are part of the Illumination Project me and my wife have been involved in.
"I'm in Charleston, South Carolina and I spent the morning at Mother Emanuel -- the oldest African Methodist Episcopal church in the South. This community is a symbol of resilience. In 2015, a white supremacist walked into bible study and murdered nine of its black members, including its pastor. The community experienced a level of grief beyond what I can imagine, and they are still working through it. Yet in the face of such hate and tragedy, the victims' families forgave the murderer and treated him with compassion. While many cities might erupt with racial tension after murders like these, the Mother Emanuel community, with a tradition of fighting injustice, led the city in setting a tone of calm for the whole nation. As one white resident of Charleston told me: "the ones we should be apologizing to are forgiving us." In our goal to build stronger communities, we have a lot to learn from Charleston and Mother Emanuel. At dinner with the reverend, rabbi, police chief, mayors, and heads of local non-profits last night, they told me one reason the community got through this is they've been building strong bonds for years. The mayor said that you can't wait until a crisis to build community; you need strong community in place when a crisis hits. The police chief described how his department has been running a summer camp to help kids and police officers get to know each other for a decade. They build trust so that when there's an emergency or when kids need help, they don't see each other as the enemy. There are inspiring stories like this all over Charleston. One woman I met was so committed to integrating the community that she worked overtime as a waitress to raise funds for a social justice program she founded to help people coming out of prison find jobs and become full members of the community again. The community still has issues. In my day here, I also heard stories about how a family with white children and an adopted black child always seems to have its black child pulled over for having a tail light out, even though all the kids share the same car. And many people told me Charleston culture values civility so highly that some issues just go unspoken. But overall, this is clearly a city that is committed to building a strong community and that has succeeded. I am deeply grateful to Reverend Eric S.C. Manning and the Mother Emanuel family for welcoming me into your community. As the reverend said in his sermon this morning: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills, even though my heart may be heavy." I hope more communities lift up their eyes to see what you have built. It will help them when their hearts are heavy, and it will help us all build stronger communities around the world."

Joey Meek sentenced to 27 months for telling others not to report Dylann Roof in Emanuel AME Church shooting | Church Shooting | postandcourier.com

What are yalls thoughts on this? Roof's friend gets two years for not reporting Roof to authorities after having knowledge of the attack.

My thought is that it should have been 5 years. This kid knew about the planned attack and did nothing but brush it off? That might be understandable as believing that it would never actually happen. I think we have all heard a friend threaten to do something really violent and stupid, and just kept it to ourselves because we didn't think he was serious and we didn't want to cause trouble. Then, it happened.............. and not only did this kid KEEP his mouth shut, but he tried to convince others to, as well. He was trying to help his friend get away with it. Period. And he should go to jail and get "Buster" or "Animal" as a cell mate.

I don't think that I have ever heard of this situation before...unless it was tried as accessorry or such. Unfortunately, in my past and my own personal experience, hearing someone talk about harming black people but not following through occurred too many times.

Of course, but once it actually happens, what kind of person just sits back and does nothing, knowing damn well who it was that did it? I love my friends, and I think that I have picked them wisely enough that none of them would do something like this. But if they did? I'd be at the Police Station offering to try to call their cell phone so that the cops could track them.

Sure. Me too but what if this guy was sympathetic to Roof's plot or at least shared his hatred? It also sounds like he slipped up to by admitting to cops that he knew about it. Had he not done that he wouldnt be in trouble.

Agree. What this guy did was obstruct a murder investigation, and I think he did it to save his own ass. I believe he thought he'd get rung up for having known the things Roof threatened to do. I don't give him credit for looking out for anyone except himself.

As for the last part...lets just say I wouldn't send him soap on a rope.

I don't know what I'd do in that situation. Probably do anything and everything to avoid implicating myself. Don't know what the punishment should be. Seems like a scared "kid."

Don't think the punishment was unreasonable. Very odd deal there.

The death penalty is an embarrassment to this country.

Your right, the death penalty is embarrassingly inappropriate here.

Roof should have his kneecaps, elbows, and jaw crushed with a baseball bat. Then left alone in a cell with a 16 ounce steak dinner, a fork, and a sharp steak knife. Roof can work it out.

Jesus dude, you are advocating for racists to be raped. Little bit extreme.

Really? You think he's less than human?
Sounds like the dude knew what he planned to do, knew he was possibly capable of it, knew it was him after it happened, then kept quite and tried to persuade others to do the same. That makes him much worse than a simple racist. Dude deserves more than 5 years in prison.

I'm advocating for the guy to get what he has earned.

I never said anything about "less than human".

You kinda did, you said you want him to get used as a shower toy.

Again, pretty extreme treatment for a dude who didn't do anything.

I'm surprisingly with Dakota on this. Punishments need to fit the crime, we're not a land of savages. He didn't pull the trigger and there is literally no way to know for sure if he knew that he would go through with it. But he did conspire to hide it and he had a responsibility to alert authorities. Hence the time he'll deservingly spend behind bars. But anything outside of that isn't within the law's discretion. It's not against the law to be a racist asshole. Maybe the time he'll spend incarcerated will help him see the light on that too, but that isn't what the punishment is for.

@Dakota - I'm actually quite surprised that you are against the death penalty. Can you elaborate on that? I agree, but didn't imagine that you would see it that way.

He ACTIVELY impeded a police investigation, and tried to help a mass murderer go free, by not telling police what he knew, and actually encouraging others to not tell the police what they knew. That's not "not doing anything".

It doesn't help anyone. Sounds pretty Old Testament... you killed someone (multiple people). Now you need to die. I might be a dick but I respect the right to life, let God take him/her when he's ready.

Right, for me I don't actually have a large issue with the fact that he didn't report Roof's threats because I think it's hard to know when someone is ranting what should be taken literally and what should be taken figuratively. I can see how someone in his shoes might not know what the correct thing is to do there depending on what he actually heard from Roof and how it was stated.

But after Roof murdered those people in that church, he had an obligation to call the police... or at minimum not actively obstruct an investigation and be to be truthful with law enforcement... I don't have any patience or understanding for someone who obstructs an investigation thereby endangering the public.

Just to be clear......... I'm not advocating that the guy get sentenced to being jail-sexed in the shower 8 or 9 times a day. I'm just saying that, if there is such a thing as karma, that's what he deserves. I AM advocating that he spent his entire sentence in prison.

Dylann Roof pleads guilty to state charges in church massacre - CNN.com
By Jay Croft and Tristan Smith, CNN
Updated 3:29 PM ET, Mon April 10, 2017

Charleston, South Carolina (CNN)Dylann Roof, who shot to death nine people in a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, pleaded guilty Monday afternoon to all state charges in the killings.

Roof was sentenced to death by a federal jury back in January for the June 2015 massacre at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The deal reached in the Charleston County Courthouse clears the way for his federal imprisonment, on death row, to begin.

...

At the federal trial, Assistant US Attorney Jay Richardson said the admitted white supremacist scouted out his target multiple times, and sat with the church group in a Bible study class for 40 minutes before shooting. Richardson said Roof pulled the trigger "more than 75 times ... reloading seven times" as he stood over his victims, shooting them repeatedly.

Not sure if anyone is interested but one of my wife's projects at work involves the recent upfit of a space at the Charleston County Airport memorializing the shooting at Mother Emanuel.

The space contains history, images, stained glass and wrought iron work, etc... by local artists. If you ever fly into Charleston, you can stop by and see it. It's pretty special.

The downside of this is the dedication and opening ceremony, which will include local VIPs and the families of the victims hasnt been and won't be released to the public for fear of possible actions by people of Roof's ilk. Sad.

Dang, I just missed it. Flew into Charleston yesterday for work, but now I'm in Rock Hill and will be in Charlotte, NC after that and fly out of there Thursday. If I known you lived in Charleston I would have hit you up!

I made sure I made it to Mother Emmanuel yesterday. Unbelievably sad. Heard from some locals how the entire community - Black, Anglo, Democrat, Republican - came together to honor the victims and condemn Roof. Had a random beer with one of those carriage tour guides and he told me his company finally had them stop wearing hats with Confederate flags on them after the shooting (it's crazy how different the South and the rest of the country views that flag...I would have never thought the flag was still prevalent as recently as a few years ago).

Beautiful city!

We went to Pensacola Beach last week. The wife and I like to drive a lot of the state highways when we drive to break up the monotony of the interstates. Driving through Alabama and Florida, I can tell you the Confederate flag is very prominent in the south.

What I find interesting is that it's also somewhat common to see Confederate flags in Northern states, especially Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Michigan, but I've seen them all over from Cali to NY. I was in northern Ohio this past weekend and saw several.

I saw one flying off a truck a year or so ago and I just asked the guy where he was from and he said Iowa (I live in Iowa) and then said you know Iowa fought for the North right? Guy just gave me a go f yourself look and walked off.

It doesn't bother me when I see it in the south because I don't understand the appeal but it at least sort of makes sense there. However, when you are in the North.....
