Thanks for this. This is a deep and talented team. A few depth issues that could arise. Backup QB hasn’t proven anything and it would be nice to get a few blowouts so that Phil can get a lot of snaps this season. I think that is imperative for the 2020 season. RB it’ll be who steps up as the 3rd guy but now they’ve got 4 guys with more than a year under their belt which is good. WR is the #3, 4, 5 spots we’ll see who steps up. Now they’ve got the talent and numbers at WR. The key will be to sort out the talent and make sure the best 4-5 see the field. I’d love to see Kevin Austin break out along with Braden Lenzy and Lawrence Keys. Keys and Lenny just bring an element that is different than what we’re used to at ND. TE might be the deepest if Takacs and Tremble (HS injury) can overcome their injuries but I think this is a super deep group with lots of talent. I wanted to see Hainsey move to OC, but as long as the OLine improves then that’s what matters. They’ve probably got their most talented top 6 from a recruiting perspective that they’ve ever had so it’ll be interesting to see if that talent can bust out.

DT, you’ve got 7 guys (staff mentioned Cross should start inside) and that should be plenty for a season if they injuries heal in time for the guys to go into the season at full steam. I thought Lacey was going to start at NT with Ja’Mion Franklin and Kurt Hinish but I could be wrong. The key with the defensive interior will be health because if anything should happen to Hinish and Tagovailoa early in the season then they’ve got a lot of inexperienced depth. Basically only 3 of the 7 have legit experience which could be an issue. Defensive end is the deepest, most stacked, and best position group on the roster and it isn’t close in my opinion. Linebacker they’ve got the numbers as has been said on the board many times but gotta find the pecking order and the guys to do the job well. Defensive back they’ve got 5 guys who are in their 4th year or more which is good but they’ve got some positional ? Marks with Nickel and Boundary.

Unsure if you want this to be true to the depth chart or your opinion on what will happen. If it's supposed to be true to the depth chart then.....

Shayne Simon has moved on from Rover and is not going back. He's a pure ILB now.

Pretty sure Lacey played exclusively at NT this Spring. Right now, he's in the 2 deep behind Hinish.

Liufau is not going to start at Drop. He could grow into it but that hasn't been communicated yet.

Kiser is starting at Rover so you could just swap him and Shayne.

Hopefully Jurkovec gets to throw to some of the fast guys in the fourth quarter against Louisville.

Very talented, really hope we have another great year. I expect 2020 to be the year we take a step back just because the attrition will be too much to deal with. We'll lose 3 incredible DEs, Pride, 2 draftable safeties, Book, Claypool.

Really hope these guys can rise to the challenge because this could be a very fun year. Nothing's guaranteed, we still need some major question marks answered: OL, interior DL, LBs, 1 CB spot but lots of reason for optimism given that roster.

Gentlemen, give me your perceived wisdom on something that I probably could have understood from you earlier but continues to elude me:

I picture ND rolling out onto the field in 2019 and look across the offense and shudder with anticipation of a loaded unit. Then I picture the defense rolling out onto the field and see a monster quality DLine , fantastic safeties, pretty good corners and .... ?

Who are we going to play at linebacker? I still can't get hold of that. Is anyone that we have now really ready now? I mean to compete big time. Who's going to be good? How do we know?

I genuinely appreciate your insight here.

I've been told that they have very high expectations for the two of Simon and Lamb. Expectations are 2-3 year starters at Mike and Buck, respectively. However, Lamb needs to stay healthy and Simon wasn't quite ready at the end of Spring, though improving quite a bit.

I'd expect a Fall Camp rotation similar to that of Spring, at least to start. I think ultimately we'll end up with a 3 or 4 for 2 scenario with Bilal, Simon, Lamb, and JGH. I'd be fairly surprised if anyone other than those 4 make a significant impact this year, at ILB, unless there is a rash of injuries (knock on wood).

If Bilal is the starting Mike it probably means no one else has stepped up. Lea seems to expect a lot from his LB's (this is good) and if they don't get the mental part they can't win the job.

Simon is the most likely to unseat Bilal but Drew White and Bo Bauer could surprise. White was apparently leading until he got hurt. Bauer has the talent, he needs more discipline which could come in time.

Mike might be the most important position on the entire team going into the season. Bilal seems like just a placeholder to me. As a 5th year sr he should be an established starter and he's not.

What's happened with JOK? He was the hyper-athletic LB we wanted but can't break through. Is he not assignment sound?

I trust the staff to roll out our 2-3 best LBs this fall. They certainly have plenty of players to continue developing.

FWIW, I was only commenting on ILB so Buck and Mike. JOK and Moala are the guys at Rover and they'll compete through Fall camp and beyond. Though we don't have a set starter at that position we have a better idea of what to expect, at least it sounds that way.

I thought JOK was expected to be the Roger starter.

LB concern by us fans seems warranted, given the production we've lost. Staff seems confident, though, so I find some solace in that.

However, I'm genuinely worried about ST. Between Doerer's accuracy and missing Newsome's big leg to flip the field, hopefully we get better as the year goes on with these youngsters.

Is there any chance that Harrison Leonard gets the nod at K? Is there going to be some competition there in fall camp or is that job Jonathan's?

I expect our return and coverage units to be average - below average per tradition.

The Athletic did a story about Leonard recently that made it sound like there will definitely be competition for the kicking job in fall camp.
Agree, though, I’m more worried about kicking/punting than linebacker too. We’ve know there’s depth and talent at the LB position. They just haven’t played much yet. We really have no idea what we have for kickers, and what we’ve seen - Doerer - was pretty terrible.

From what I've read, there is hope that Leonard can come in and take over kick-off and potentially punting duties and Doerer just focuses on FGs. I think i remember that right.

Got it, must have missed that. Thanks, looking forward to seeing how that competition shakes out.

Are you forgetting about Jay Bramblett coming in as punter? He was underwhelming at the Spring Game for the most part, but I'm hoping a lot of that was just nerves. It was really windy that day too, IIRC.

Interesting on Leonard/Doerer. I'd be surprised if Leonard comes in to take over kickoffs; Doerer has a huge leg, as long as he fixes the issues with kicking them out of bounds. But therein lies my concern with him...he can't keep the ball in bounds on KO let alone hitting it between narrow uprights haha.

This will be quite the experiment come fall. ST is something that's easy to take for granted, especially with you have guys like Yoon and Newsome for as long as we had.

Doh! I was mixing all of our kickers up. Disregard what I said.
