Grading every college football coaching hire in 2015 (so far) - CBSSports.com

By Tom Fornelli | Staff Writer
December 22, 2015 11:30 am ET

On Sunday, news broke that Georgia Southern was hiring Colorado State defensive coordinator Tyson Summers to be its new coach. There's a good chance that, unless you're a Georgia Southern fan, you didn't pay much attention to this news, but it was an important announcement.

You see, Georgia Southern was the last FBS job opening ... until Tuesday, when Ball State's coach surprisingly resigned and Texas State's did, too. So when it was announced that Summers had been hired, for the first time since late August when Illinois fired Tim Beckman, every single FBS school had a coach without an interim title next to his name for about 48 hours.

So now that the coaching carousel has slowed, but not come to a full stop, we can take the moment to grade all the hires from around the country.

Fornelli liked the coaching changes which the exception of two, Illinois who he gave an F and Southern Cal who he gave a D. In both cases Fornelli's deficient grade was not directed at the one hired but those doing the hiring.

USC -- D - Clay Helton: USC never seems to learn from its mistakes, does it? Ever since Pete Carroll left for Seattle, the Trojans have been trying to recapture the magic of Carroll's tenure. They tried this by hiring one of Carroll's old assistants, and when that didn't work out, they hired another one of Carroll's old assistants. That didn't work out, either. So what do they do next? Promote one of Carroll's old assistant's assistant. The Trojans went 5-3 under Helton with wins against Utah and UCLA, but they also lost to Notre Dame, Oregon and Stanford by an average of 16.3 points per game. USC was the most attractive job available for a long time, and could have gone after anybody it wanted. Instead, it feels like USC took the easy way out.

Other hires of interest to ND:

ACC
A+ Miami -- Mark Richt: Let's think about this for a moment. After firing Al Golden, some of the candidates mentioned for this job were former players who had gone 27-47 in their only stints as a coach elsewhere like Mario Cristobal, or a retread like Butch Davis, who had success at Miami but wasn't great at North Carolina and brought the NCAA to Chapel Hill with him. Then after all of that, the Canes ended up with a former player who has won 145 games as a coach, plus two SEC titles. Who was out there that would have been a better hire for Miami? If Richt can't get this team to an ACC title game, nobody can.
A+ Virginia Tech -- Justin Fuente: It was a strong hiring season for the ACC overall, and I'm not sure I liked any hire better than Fuente. Memphis may have faded a bit down the stretch, but you simply cannot deny the job Fuente did building the program to what it is today. Memphis had won three games in the two seasons before Fuente took over, and he won four games his first season, navigated the move from Conference USA to the more difficult AAC, and won 19 games the last two years. Oh, and Fuente also retained Bud Foster as defensive coordinator, which means that the Hokies are not only bringing their offense into the 21st century, but they'll be keeping the defense they've always been known for. The Hokies are on their way back.
A- Syracuse -- Dino Babers: The Orange have been an afterthought in the ACC since joining the conference, and they needed to make a hire that could revitalize the program and change the way we think of Syracuse football. Cuse did just that by hiring Babers, who will bring the same offense we see every week from Baylor -- that he utilized at both Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green -- to the Carrier Dome. The scoreboard will get a much stronger workout than it had been, which could lead to a lot more wins for the Orange. The only reason I'm not giving this hire a flat A is because Babers hasn't been a coach anywhere longer than two seasons, so he's yet to prove he can build and sustain a program.
B Virginia -- Bronco Mendenhall: This was one of the most surprising hires of the offseason, and also one of the most interesting. Make no mistake about it, Mendenhall is a good coach. The question is how well he'll be able to adapt to life at Virginia in the ACC compared to what he dealt with at BYU. Sure, he'll be dealing with a lot fewer restrictions with the Cavs, but Bronco's also spent the vast majority of his career west of the Mississippi River (he spent one season as defensive backs coach at Louisiana Tech in 1997), so he's not exactly familiar with the area.

I acknowledged it may have had no direct influence with Studstill. I'm also not privy to as much info as you.

But, you don't think if they had another month and half it might been different? I think Miami was our biggest competition from beginning and they improved at the coaching position (can't hurt them).

As I mentioned above, I'm glad our staff identified Devin early and put in the work making anyone else's late attempts nullified. And I'm glad he EE'd!

Once I saw film from Invasion I was sold, much like you have been!

As I said then, no I don't believe it would've mattered and no, I don't believe Miami was the biggest competition. If Miami and Richt were going to be such big players, don't you think he would've visited Miami on his last weekend before his decision versus Texas. Thats not private information just common sense, to me at least. Not a big deal anyways, we're all excited he's Irish, I was just busting your chops a little since you brought it up ;)

About 45-50% of our tuition payments (as students) go to athletics already apparently.

Wow!

No Phil Knight, Boone Pickens, alumni with $$$$ to spare?

Letterman gives to the school but not athletics?

Papa John's founder?

Jason Whitlock?

USC:
Clay Helton noted today that he is not going to rush into any coaching hires with guys finishing up in the NFL and with their bowl games and hopes to have hires made by mid-January.

BYU hired Ty Detmer as OC.

Pretty good football head...I think he'll get and build nice QBs. After that...IDK what he'll do with scheme....but he will chuck it around.

It is really hard for me to be reasonable here...Still resent him. It was Rocket's Heisman, and they gave it to Detmer. I was already pissed, but to send me into a complete rage, Detmer followed up the award with like 5 INTs in his bowl appearance...and we know what Rocket did (short a BS clip call). So Detmer kidnapped Rocket's Heisman...the least the Heisman folks could do is give Reggie Bush's to Rocket.

Good gig if you can get it

Good gig if you can get it

Universities are on the hook to get rid of bad coaches, sometimes due to bad choices on extensions. Notre Dame, Auburn, Nebraska among those who pay fired coaches huge buyouts

Some additional examples:
Will Muschamp will have the second highest income among SEC coaches for the next three years (Florida's $2.1 million + South Carolina's $3 million). SEC's second highest salary is Kevin Sumlin at $5 million. Auburn had made Muschamp the highest paid assistant coach. He avoided a personal buyout by accepting the South Carolina positin one day after it expired.

Mike London, whose .369 winning percentage ranked 98th of 119th coaches during his tenure, was extended two years. That put Virginia on the hook for $2.7million.

Mike Locksley, who was 2-26 at New Mexico, had multiple off-field incidents including punching an assistant coach, a sexual discrimination and age discrimination lawsuit, and player arrests. UNM renegotiated a buyout prior to his third year to escape with a $750,000 buyout.

Ron Prince sued Kansas State for a "handshake agreement" on an extension. K-state escaped with a one-time $1.6 million buyout. He averaged a 3--5 record against Big 12 opponents over three years (9--15) , while alienating players, coaches, and fans.

So "Silly season" also includes Universities being cautious and protect themselves with clauses on character and requiring fired coaches to pursue another head coaching positions immediately with a reduction of the buyouts they are responsible for by the income from the new salaries.

I feel like the only job Fitz would leave NW for would be the Bears job, and that isn't open. I feel like the only job Mora would leave UCLA for is...any of them.

If the giants job opens up we'll start to hear the rumors of BK going IMO

Article today on NJ.com essentially said that despite John Mara really liking BK, BK won't be coming due to comments BK made during the press conference about having total personnel control.

No way the Mara's allow one guy to handle all those duties.

The more I think about the Giants job, the more I think that it goes to Hue Jackson. Or perhaps Sean Payton if he's released. Although that's all moot if NY decides to roll the dice on Coughlin again.

LSU to hire Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Aranda - CBSSports.com

By Tom Fornelli | Staff Writer
January 1, 2016 10:37 pm ET

It appears that LSU's job opening at defensive coordinator was short-lived.

LSU announced Friday night that it has hired Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Aranda to serve in the same role in Baton Rouge.

“This is a great hire for us,” said Les Miles “Dave has an outstanding track record of producing some of the best defenses in college football. We've seen him up close and understand how difficult it is to have success against him."

Aranda signed a three-year deal that will pay him $1.3 million in 2016, with increases in salary each season.

Aranda has been at Wisconsin since 2013, and the Badgers have never finished lower than No. 7 nationally in total defense or lower than No. 17 in scoring defense in his three seasons with the Badgers.

It's not often that you lose your defensive coordinator to another school against your will -- and by all accounts, Les Miles tried to convince Steele to stay -- and then upgrade the position. I don't mean that as an insult to Steele, it's just Aranda is one of the brightest defensive minds in college football these days.

Now if only LSU could upgrade that other coordinator spot...

Any takers?? Last time BK took a coach from Tennessee it turned out to be one of his best hires.
