I'm too young to remember Arena's first stint as US manager...what are his tendencies, etc?

Completely different time in US Soccer talent/depth wise so it's hard to say. His one major critique is sometimes he plays it too safe. I too am a little young to remember much about him as USMNT coach. I'm mostly familiar with his LA Galaxy success. He took us to a quarterfinals though where we were an uncalled handball against Germany away from the semis.

Will Arena do double duty with the Galaxy? Or will he step down in LA? If he steps down it could make one hell of an interesting set of dominos in the MLS.

I like arena as a coach, just not the US men's coach. He already said he doesn't believe in playing foreign born players on the team.

I can't see a major national team coach having two teams

Yeah, this is really my main concern. I think what Klinsmann has done in terms of expanding the player pool to include players based in Europe is great, and I want that broad reach to continue. Over the years, Arena has talked about the importance of building U.S. soccer by strengthening the domestic league, which I don't necessarily agree with. The U.S. team should use the best players who are eligible to play, period. I am hoping that Arena won't stick to that point of view now that he isn't personally invested in the strength of MLS in the same way he was as an MLS coach.

I do like the hire though.

I love the stat about Arena having the best record of our last five managers against top 20 teams.

Right now we have the talent; it's just not organized optimally. Arena is the perfect guy to sort that out.

I just hope he doesn't undo the good things Klinsmann has done in terms of expanding the reach of U.S. soccer to eligible players based in Europe.

While I am glad Klinsman is gone I really don't want BA back coaching again. Not sure that is the right thing to do.

BA would be a complete fool to alienate players like Brooks and Johnson, players who have 100% embraced their American heritage and citizenship, and he would get too much heat from the media + non-soccer media for being xenophobic were he to do that.

Duel Nats are simply too important to the national team. While Julian Green isn't the all world player we thought he would be, he is still going to be a high level player in a top 5 league. There are few others coming along the ranks too like Timothy Tillman, Cameron Carter-Vickers (consistently making the 18 for Tottenham), and Marlon Fossey that are duel nats who have represented us before that would love to suit up some day for the senior team. I am totally cool though without call ups of second and third division guys like Jerome Keiswetter and Andrew Wooten just because they are duel nats playing in Germany.

Yeah, I am sure you are probably right that, at this point, he won't alienate established dual nats. I just hope he continues to seek out and take an interest in young Europe-based dual nats, who might be more likely to fly under the U.S. soccer radar without a deliberate attempt to find them. I want the player pool to have as broad a base as possible.

Toronto lighting it up in extra time, watching Bradley and Altidore w TFC is frustrating because both can be so dynamic, Klin just couldn't get that out of either.

No doubt. 5th goal was almost all JA making something out of nothing. Did everything but put the ball in the net.

Ha, that was right around when I became a Celtic fan... hatred for Man U was a part of that too, CFC played them the CF around that time and I was already kind of on board... when Celtic beat them.... it just helped cement it.
