Re: US vs Haiti: --- you guys are the experts so I'm asking with humility --- I thought that the team looked like it had only four or five players out there who looked high-quality functional [Dempsey and Bradley and Gonzalez and Johansson I think were the names that spring to mind; I have probably spelled them wrong.] The defense looked slow. The offense seemed to vitally need Zardes, and Altidore looked terrible at least half the time [almost a mirror of the Women needing to bench Abby to get more attack.] Rather disturbingly horrible giveaways in the midfield areas by several players not named Bradley. Is this even remotely accurate? And can we hope for a turnaround, and how?
Secondly, in this I have no clue: how does Dempsey stack up with the elite strikers/ attack players of the world? I know that Messi seems to be on another level of reality, but where does Dempsey fall? The guy has some of the greatest "glide" speed and get-something-done-when-he-gets-there that I've seen in this new sports-watching interest I've acquired.
I will give this a shot and hopefully it makes a bit of sense.
The lineup we had last night was fairly experimental and would be considered a B or C squad. A good mix of rookies with few caps getting exposure against international teams and veterans prepping for the next four year tournament cycle. The formation was one Klinnsman likes to use though he will and does change it as needed.
Re the personnel....you are correct that Dempsey and Bradley are our most talented vets, they may have one more World Cup cycle in them but they are in top form above others on the squad right now. Johannsen is young and still developing chemistry with Bradley and Dempsey. I expect him to be a major cog moving forward because jozy has obviouly lost his way since Brazil. I am not sure what happened but he was playing amazing before blowing his hamstring in the 1st game and I have not seen him play as well since.
Mix Diskerud had the talent to be as good as Clint and Michael but he was used in an unfamiliar role for this tournament. I think Kinsman is covering his rear in case Bradley or Beckerman gets hurt or is otherwise unavailable for international duty moving forward (ie developing players that can play multiple roles not just positions). Likewise Zusi had a great cycle last WC but is not in great form now. Hopefully that changes.
Much of what we saw last night from the backline was merely no chemistry. That lineup has not played together for any meaningful amount of time. Ream has been in great form for his club team and Omar is probably our best center back. Evans and Garza are on the fringes for team selection moving forward and I think they either pick it up soon or we dont see much of them moving forward. I honestly have not seen anything from Garza to warrant much celebration but he was Cap-tied to the national team last night so Klinsman must want him around.
Guzan has been our Gk in waiting and he will most likely be our guy for the next two cycles.
Re Dempsey... yes he is our most skilled veteran and technically gifted player that I have seen play. Compared to other world talents its hard to rate but on a scale to 100 with messi and Ronaldo at 100, I would put him at about 82. He did very well in the toughest and elite league in the world for several years. If there is a ceiling for US field playerscin the international arena I would say he set it.
