Extra time.

Whoever plays Brazil is going to be DRAINED. The oppressive heat plus the oppressive humidity, plus these 2 teams going at it with all the pressure that comes with it, plus extra time? And then they have to chase the Brazilians around the field, coming off an extra day's rest playing a much inferior opponent, on their home turf? Yikes.

Fun game...I don't see why Italy can't play like this more consistently. They have some serious talent and are displaying a will to compete as well...

Here is Celtic's squad coming into 2017 (after winning the EPL and Champions league last season)... I have my first freindly tonight.

-----------------------Bernd leno

Michah Richards, Mats Hummels, Omar Gonzalez, Dede

-------------Michael Bradley, Joe Ledley,

------David Hoilet,------------------Eden Hazard

----------95 overall American who just happens to share my name

----------------------Gary Hooper

Key reserves...

Gary Mackay-Steven
Jozy Altidore
Charlie Mulgrew
Cheikh M'Bengué
Evgeni Markeev
James Forrest

Keep in mind this is a few years out so any of the young players have matured nicely... Leno and Forrest are both 90's for example.

If you have FIFA you can make this happen. It's good to have dreams. Liverpool are going to sell Suarez for 50m and then get some wingers a CB, CDM, and LB. Then we are going go get top four next year, win the PL the year after, and in CL the year after that...

They didn't look that great against Uruguay but you're right about everything.

Italy is good when it counts, always.

Penalties!!!!

Both teams hit the post in the extra time. Spain finally started to dominate, but ran out of time. Italy looked completely gassed at the end, but they played a helluva game.

I HATE this crap!

Penalties = so silly. Would be better off just pulling off a player every OT period and keep going.

Pirlo is so ice cold on his penalties. Like he gives zero ****s and is shooting on a 3rd grader.

Its amazing the mental strength of some of these guys. I loved the close up of Pirlo's face during the PK, like he is so cool and confident. I almost **** my pants taking a PK for the 7th grade St. Louis city championship haha.

13 penalties. Arguably the 2 best keepers in the world. 0 blocks.

That was a PK clinic.

This is almost exactly what i told my co workers as it was going to the sixth round... not every day you see those two go that deep without stopping anything...

A, I love Gatt, and in FIFA 13 I brought him to Arsenal so he can run opposite Walcott. Can't wait to see what he can do for the US!

B, upset Italy didn't win. Really had some amazing opportunities in the 1st half. Now I have to say go Brazil.

I'm really getting sick of Spain.

Thing is, as I've said earlier they are SUCH a bad watch... 80 minutes of passing back to the midfielders.... Ugh

Now I know and understand why they do it, and yes it clearly works, but from a fan standpoint you have to be a Spanish fan to enjoy that type of game IMO...

Ill take Germany's style personally for a neutral watch...

For the record, Italy has never been that interesting to watch either

I get this, I really do. I disagree completely as I think they are a joy to watch, but I get why you would think that, and there are times when I watch them that I get frustrated myself when they don't attack north and south. But seriously, as you probably know, A LOT of it has to do with how the opponents play. And almost every single opponent bunkers down and puts 10-11 behind the ball and in the middle of the field, giving Spain very little space to go forward once they reach the final 3rd. And I understand when teams like Paraguay do it, but when teams like Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, etc do it, it's shocking and it makes for boring soccer despite the best players in the world playing in the game.

Take Germany, perhaps the most talented team in the world...the past 2 times they played Spain the bunkered down and refused to commit players forward in numbers, and this was after KILLING teams with a beautiful style of soccer that had me scared shitless. It's like they get in front of la Furia Roja and they change everything that made them great. And it sucks to watch, especially b/c Spain basically says "eff you, we'll just keep the ball and keep the ball and keep the ball until you make a tiny mistake, and then we'll capitalize on it." There's a reason you see so many 1-0 games with Spain in the big tournaments, despite having such firepower, and that's because teams won't come out and challenge them.

But the book, at least for me, has been out on Spain for awhile. Clog the middle, but have confidence on the ball and commit players forward, and Spain can be had. Easier said than done, but a disciplined team like Italy or Germany can beat Spain. We'll see if Brazil is disciplined enough defensively to do it. There is no better time for them to beat Spain (for all the reasons I listed in a post above), so it should be a fascinating battle.

(And fwiw, I love watching that style. I played on a competitive team in L.A. that tried to play that style, and it is soooooooo hard to do. The movements and technical skills of the players on the team is absolutely amazing and extremely difficult to duplicate.)

Yea I'd almost root for France to beat them even though I hate the French soccer team

I love it...Spain has turned into the New York Yankees (except, we've done it organically through player development and commitment to a system).

You guys have to realize, Spain was the laughingstock of high-level futbol for decades. The Red Sox, the Cubs. To see my dad's country now hated for winning is absolutely stunning and nobody would have believed this just 5 years ago. It's crazy. I don't blame people for hating them (I start to hate teams when they start winning too much too), but I do hope people appreciate the beauty and intricacy of their game, and the way they've suddenly gone from all-time choke artists to a team with incredible will that refuses to lose. Other than their incessant overacting on fouls (sooooo embarrassing), I love this team...

Compared to the major soccer nations, I actually root for Spain. I just favor them over teams like Germany, Italy the rest of Europe and most of Latin America. I know that USA and Ireland will never really be solid contenders so I don't expect too much from them. So other than those two I would like to see Spain continue its dominance in the next world cup, although I wouldn't mind seeing Argentina winning it with Messi on top.

I really don't hate Spain. In my heirarchy of hatred, they are far behind Spain, Ghana, and England. I just really find them hard to watch, and the second there is a bit of contact, they go down as if they had been shot.

I liken Spain to watching the old school defensive Italian teams. They have a style... they know it works... so they're not going to change it. So as a neutral observer you just have to deal with it.

End of an era today? I think so. I think Brazil will win in convincing fashion today

I think Brazil will win, but I wouldn't call it an end to an era. A streak, yes. But the Spaniards are going to be a force to reckon with for the foreseeable future. It's them, Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Argentina, and then everyone else.

Even if Spain loses, it means very little in the grand scheme of things as far as their era ending. Everything possible is going in Brazil's favor, for reasons I stated in a post above. And Europeans just don't win major tournaments in South America, and vice-versa (Brazil, for all their brilliance has never won a World Cup in Europe).

Playing a dead-tired, older opponent at home, Brazil should win today, and if they don't, they'll have some major things to think about. If the roles were reversed, I'd say the exact same thing about Spain. Now, if Spain were to lose to a team that wasn't at home, and wasn't that good, then I'd be worried.

As for Spain going forward, there's no way this is an end of an era, even if they lose. Their second team is RIDICULOUSLY loaded, with players such as Nava (Man City), Mata (Chelsea), Santi (Arsenal), Azpilicueta (Chelsea), et al starring at the club level but can't see the field regularly for Spain. Put it this way...10 of the 11 2nd team players will be playing in the Champions League next year. That's sick. And add to that the U21 champs, the U19 champs, and the U20 favorites (remember the names Jese and Gerard Deulofeu...future stars)...the future looks really, really good.

Where Spain will have trouble though in the coming years is defensively, can they keep up their dominance? Puyol is done, and Pique looked awful before finally playing well against Italy. And without Xavi Alonzo (huge loss for this tourney), they just have too many midfielders that are allergic to tracking back consistently. And I think Brazil can/will exploit that unless they make a concerted effort to track back and tackle.

Should be an awesome game though! But in the end, just a game, not a defining moment IMO. Gonna watch it with nlroma10 and our ladies...too bad his Azzuri couldn't beat us lol...

Brazil has come up short in the biggest games the last 5-6 years. Spain hasn't. I think Spain will be motivated to silence the doubters that say they won't win this match. However, Brazil will probably get a home whistle or two or three. I'm predicting 2-1 Brazil on a penalty shot in the 78th minute or later.

That Uruguay vs Italy game was pretty wild. Buffon had some great saves but let in that free kick that I think he saves if he is younger.

Uruguay's PKs were dreadful. Telegraphed crappy shots.
