That's what I based it on too. Depressing me, dude.

Yeah. My truck is my daily driver and I not only commute to my office, but go on calls daily, which adds even more miles to my truck.

It's pretty cool.

That's brutal, man. Take a look at the new Ram EcoDiesel. If I'm not mistaken, it gets close to 30 mpg. I'm not a huge fan of Dodge but I know they used to make a great diesel truck with a Cummins engine (not sure if this one has a Cummins, though). If you're spending that much, and your truck is a necessity, it could be a decent option.

My gas light went on last wed and I just filled up last night. My life got so much better when I cut the commute from 45 minutes to 5.

I would get one if I had to drive say 50+ mile one way for work. Since I drive round trip 12 it cost me 3.59 bucks per in my truck. Kept the wife's 2007 ford five hundred and it's gas mileage is a little better than double. Thinking about it a 50+ drive to work would kill my soul. No thank you

You should seriously think about finding a job closer to home. I thought I didn't mind the drive and the gas expense until I got my new job. What a difference in money saved and more time to do things.

I live in a town of 4000 people in SW Michigan. South Bend, St Joe and Kalamazoo are all far away (SB being the closest, but still a 20-30 minute drive). In my field, driving is part of the gig. I can't make what I make without commuting, unless I move. Which is also something I refuse to do.

Awesome!!! I seriously dream about a car like this. I love my Subaru (Subaru owners are a cult) but I would really love to downsize to a tiny car that gets astronomical gas mileage. I have a weird minimalist fetish. I also love tiny houses. Of course, we have a kid now, so my wife made me get a (relatively) big car and a single family home. Bleh.

You remind me of my brother in law, Wooly, with the "I'll never not have a truck" line. He started a new job that required him to commute over a 100 miles/day, and he had this customized Mustang that was totally his baby, and there was no effing way he was getting rid of that, so he got a little Honda that got better gas mileage strictly for commuting.* Why have just one car when you can have two for twice the price. Lol.

*He later got married and had a kid and his wife made him get rid of the Mustang. He was seriously near tears. I felt so bad for him.**

**The theme of this post is don't have kids. (lol)

I guess I never had you pegged as a lesbian. Good for you. I do not stand in judgement.

Saw this and I find it intriguing. At $6,800, this car is practically free for me when you account the difference in gas savings. It is also supposedly going to have a 5 star crash rating. I know a lot of these companies flop, but this seems realistic to me. Certainly a viable product that has a "car of the people" feel to it. I commute almost 100 miles a day, so this would be a great "2nd car" for me (I'll never not have a truck, but its killing me with gas as a daily driver).

Thoughts?

I'm just trying to figure out where the rest of the car ended up after getting T Boned. Seriously, seems like it would make plenty of sense financially for your situation. Is it 3 wheel drive?

You guys are thinking small here. Saving money on your commute by switching to a ridiculously fuel efficient car is nice, but Google's self-driving cars will soon allow you to reclaim all that time as well. Imagine being able to read, sleep or game during your commute.

Why stop there? We could also post here about 17/18 year old kids.

Lord, it could transform society.

They are saying that if it catches on it will eliminate traffic congestion because the cars can tailgate safely. So precise in their driving that there is never any need to maintain a safe following distance.

It takes me about an hour to go 18 miles to work in the mornings. You can imagine how ready I am for the Google car.

You get a mile per gallon on your current ride? Or am I not understanding the distances/math presented?

$10/gal at a low fuel economy of 25 MPG would be $30/day for an arduous 75 mile commute.

Personally, I find the car quite intriguing. The current car I have right now (Mazda 3 with Skyactiv) I bought specifically because it's gas mileage was so good that it actually outpaced the Prius for highway driving and I drive a LOT to both my office and job sites. The car you listed seems like a perfect city car.

My truck gets 16mpg if I drive the speed limit or just under it. Most of the time, I end up getting around 14mpg. So, if I drove it 100 miles to work, that's 200 miles round trip. At 14 mpg, that would mean I would need just over 14 gallons of gas a day. So, 15 gallons a day (to be safe) at $10 per gallon. Whew, proud I only have to drive about 4 miles to my school!

I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado Z71 with a 7.4 liter (454 for those of you familiar with cars) engine. I bought the truck from a junk yard & built it. It was my hobby for nearly a year. It was a theft recovery & it was literally just a frame with a body when I got it. I went with the big block engine because here in 'Tha SIP', a favorite past time is mud riding. It has a 6 inch suspension lift and 3 inch body lift. For tires, I have 18 inch wide/44 inch tall Monster Mudders. I do have a wench on the front, but to date I have personally never needed it. I use the wench to pull everyone that goes kidding with me out when they get stuck. It has two 30 gallon tanks on it & every time I fill up, I say I'm parking it & buying something cheaper. Not very fuel efficient, but damn it's fun to drive.

Oh yeah, it's 6 feet from the ground to the top of my hood. Haha!

lol, that's fair enough. I mean, there's a reason it's not on the market yet.

Seriously, the last I heard the big question hanging over the cars is who would be liable if there is a car accident, and under what theory. If Google has to be worried about infinite products liability lawsuits, even they can't afford to sell these things.

I see the biggest logistical issue being the transition / rollout period. If there were only going to be driverless cars on the road and they could all "talk" to one another, it would probably be feasible with current technology. I think they'd run into major problems getting driverless cars on the road while most people are still using manually operated vehicles.

Right, I think that's basically the issue. I remember reading that they are excellent at avoiding other cars on the road but they struggle to avoid pedestrians or other non-driving obstructions.

No fault sucks IMO. Back in 2001 had a lady hit me in Florida (no fault there) while on vacation. I wasn't about to have my insurance pay to fix my truck and then jack my premium. Her insurance relented and paid. Sad thing, was it was a 94' F150XL in pristine shape inside and out and they totaled it.

I'd like to pay less in gas, but I do like my commute. It's about 30 mins, sometimes a little more especially with summer traffic. But it's nice to be alone and not having anyone pestering me about BS. Better decompression than going to the bar across the street right after work.
