Unfortunately this is almost always the case with ND QBs. I'm admittedly a pessimist willing to be proven wrong--often I am so proven--and I'm struggling to think of a QB whose gotten better under Kelly. Rees? No (but then he didn't get worse). Golson? Absolutely not. Zaire? No. Kizer? No. Wimbush? No. Book? No. And it's absolutely bizarre that ND's best years have been with walk-on Tommy Rees (2012 he was Golson's bail out) and three star roster filler Ian Book?

Golson, Kizer, Zaire, Jurkovec, Wimbush....four and five star QBs fizzle out. How in 11 years--and they've been good years to be clear--has he not had one of these guys truly work-out? Kizer had one very good season. The rest....

We are getting awful nostalgic about Tommy Rees as a player. His best attribute was to not dwell on his mistakes. His nickname on this board during his playing days was Tommy Turnover., and we had a lot of 8-5 seasons. He seemed to play better after turning the ball over, but he turned it over a lot. His most memorable moments were getting his a** chewed out by a purple-faced Coach Kelly while the TV cameras recorded it for all to see.

That ass chewing was Amazing and Turnover Tommy still rules and always will rule.

My favorite (and by favorite I mean seared into my mind and I still have PTSD) Tommy memory is the little hands fumble against Michigan. Holy shit was that an all-timer.

Throwing the game losing pick vs. Tulsa wasn't #1?

You mean y'all don't primarily think if Rees' valiant effort against Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl?

Didn't Tommy fumble the ball as he tried to attempt a pass vs USC in the red zone by the ball simply falling out of his hand as he attempted the forward motion like that Dolphins kicker in the Superbowl?

That's my memory of Tommy. Straight up Three Stooges stuff.

Other noteworthy memories is how piss poor Tommy was down the stretch in 2011. Remember, he played awful against Stanford and there was debate between him and Hendrix to start against FSU. Both stunk against FSU, with Tommy throwing a terrible interception in the end zone in the first quarter. QB play crushed us that day. And who can forget the 2013 OU game, where Tommy threw two interceptions in the first 70 seconds, including a pick six, and ND was down 14 before breaking a sweat.

Tommy didn't lose that game for us. He built a 3 TD lead going into the 4th quarter. Defense blew it.

So much hating on Tommy here. How about the Utah game in 2010? That ended a losing skid and facilitated a turnaround that probably saved BK's job. How about ending the losing streak against USC the same year? How about Golson getting benched in 2012 and Tommy beating the Wolverines with his legs? Or the 2 minute drive against Purdue earlier that season to save the game and keep the perfect season going? Or coming in for the injured Golson to cap the Stanford win in overtime? He also upset a Rose Bowl Michigan State team in 2013 that we had no business competing with. People also forget Tommy came in for a few plays for Golson against OU in 2012, converting a 3rd and long at a pivotal point that led to a TD and a big momentum shift. I can name a bunch more.

Bottom line, there's a lot of positives that Tommy gave this university. His contributions were above and beyond what was expected of him giving his skillset and recruiting status, not to mention the death threats he received along the way. Why are people still bitching about him 7 years later?

I don't recall that, but I do recall Tommy getting banged up for a few plays against USC in 2011 which led to Crist coming in and fumbling a pass or handoff that led to a scoop and score. We didn't recover from that. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

Tommy also built a lead against USC in 2013 before getting injured in the 2nd half and Andrew Hendrix had to hold on for dear life the 2nd half to preserve that lead. I don't think Andrew picked up one first down the entire game, it's amazing the defense was able to keep us alive.

Tommy will be laughing (at all you critics) all the way to the bank. Eventually we will all be jealous of his success and fat wallet.

I remember back in 2013 I was frequenting Keith Arnold's NBC blog for GameDay live chats. Around halftime somebody asked what others are prepping for the rest of the game, and I mentioned that if Tommy went out, I'm having nothing but Jameson the rest of the day. Keith highlighted it and well, nothing at all happened in the second half because Tommy played only 1 more series.

Andrew Hendrix in that 2013 USC game is the worst quarterback play I've ever seen. And I know pretty dang well about bad QB play; after all, I'm a Bears fan.

Hard to shake the Dillingham BC performance in 2002.
