They have 20 guys signed today and it looks like 7 are committed but have not signed yet. He has to hit those 7 first, see what he's got, then get back out there and close it out in February.

Recruit the ever living hell out of TN, GA, NC, VA, OH and FL. He's in a good spot for sure when it comes to location. He'll go up against Northwestern, Stanford, Duke for recruits but so what?

So sounds like he's still got room for 20+ scholarship guys. Better be portal shopping on your down time lol.

Yes, and recruit the hell out of TN, and the rest of the SE. Given his time at UCLA, Wake, and Cuse, he should be all over though.

Y'know, with the free transfers coming up, Vandy actually might be able to rebuild a little quicker than we thought. Lea will actually bring some hype on the defensive side of the ball, and that might attract some guys to help kickstart Lea's tenure.

Well, if I was correct in the scholarship situation, he's literally got around 25% of his roster still open after ESD. Can't do a total makeover, but he could have a roster that is basically 50% new his first season. Not 100% on those figures, but that's what I though I saw.

Purdue has reportedly parted ways w/ DC Bob Diaco. Let’s hope BK has moved on from the Bobby D days as they have only gotten worse since he left.

Only if he's willing to shave his head like Lea, forget about his recruiting requirements, and let Clark's mini-me call the shots.

Bo Pelini and Bob Diaco both on the market now. Bags of riches for ND haha

Saban would stash them as analysts. I would gladly take a year of Pelini as an analyst before he moves on.

Pass on Diaco. He creates too much CoNfLiCt

Did Bo spend a year as an analyst? I know his son was a walk on.

For some reason I remember him speaking at a clinic before or was on the schedule to? Wouldn't be the worst thing to bring him in the next couple weeks if he's got a good relationship with BK to give a little bit of insight on Bama.

Talk about a massive fall from grace.

Diaco was a Broyles winner and led a dynamic defense in '12. Then he essentially phoned it in in 2013, took the first HC job available and crashed and burned at UConn.

Then he went to Nebraska and was fired after 1 year.

Stayed at OU as an analyst, then went to Louisiana Tech, where his defense was mediocre at best for a year. Got picked up by Brohm and tanked Purdue's defense and was subsequently fired.

Yeah, I'd be okay with him being brought in as an analyst but nothing more.

We should really be trying to do this with a lot of the coordinators and head coaches who were just fired. Get Gus Malzahn in the building and try to get some of his Bama beating magic to rub off on us.

I'd rather not see Bob Diaco or Bo Pelini anywhere near ND unless they're coaching the opposing defense, in which case I would be very inclined to bet the over.

We don't need any re-tread coaches stepping foot on our campus. Circle the wagons with our staff and get after it. Anyone hearing rumblings about possible candidates? I suppose we'll learn a bit post Alabama, although nothing to date has been kept secret. Thanks Vandy.

Nothing official has happened yet, i.e. no one has interviewed as far as we know.

The beat reporters seem to think there is a top tier of guys like Leonhard, Freeman, and Heacock that you have to take if you can get them. Then if that doesn't happen it could be an internal hire.

EDIT - they also said that about Joe Moorhead and Kelly hired Rees, so grain of salt and all that

LSU firing Pelini complicates things a bit, especially considering the salary they had agreed to.

If I am a hot candidate like Leonard, my ask would have been in the $2m range anyway and with LSU being back on the market after having giving Pelini $2.3m last year I am afraid that the market might be too rich for ND's liking.

ND reportedly refused to pay Elko $2m and he was already on staff and a proven fit.

I'm ok with Elston or Joseph if they are the best candidates available. I just hope this doesn't become about money.

With Lance Leipold not going to Illinois, Brian Borland is a name I still would like them to consider. There was talk he would taken over as HC if Lance left.

Buffalo has had good defenses under him with high havoc rates and they have developed some real quality talent for the MAC level. He runs a 4-3 with past history of 3-3-5 which seems like he could blend into our 4-2-5.

I am pretty sure they gave him the 2m then A&M said they would match or exceed so he came back and asked for more a second time, likely around $2.5. Thats when we told him to kick rocks.

Yep. It's not that ND wouldn't be willing to pay that money, it's they aren't interested in being used as a bartering chip for a DC after you were already offered and agreed upon a very fair raise and extension.

With Brown out at that other school, the Irish better be backdooring Freeman if they are going on the outside.

Mentioned this in another thread. I really hope BK doesn't just blindly ignore this until post CFP.

It doesn't take too long to put out some feelers and get those guys on the phone if necessary for a quick conversation.

I am almost entirely certain that Freeman isn't happening.

He's on a similar career track as Lea is. I can see him being the next Cincinnati HC once Fickell gets a better job offer.

If I was Freeman I would stick with Cincinnati for this very reason. His quickest route to a head coaching position of a pretty decent program is to stick with Cincy until Fickell leaves. Given Fickell's likely frustration over the CFP rankings for an undefeated Cincy team, seems like Fickell would be moving on within a year or two.
