All of these opt outs across the country... I get it I do. But I also don't. It also is part of the larger collapse of what always made College Football so special. Bowl season was always this awesome time of teams who never play seeing each other, surprises, upsets, nostalgia, and general excitement about football.

Now it's about who can stay standing, and if you aren't in the playoff, you have opt outs. I mean, the fact that guys now even opt out of NY6 games is just ludicrous to me.

I feel like every December since I've been following CFB (mid 2000s) has seen complaints of "bowl season is dead, CFB just ain't the same anymore."

it's not dead. But it is dying, or at least, less fun. It's weird because there are more bowl games now than in the past, but that doesn't make it better. The playoff, transfer portal, and opt outs have really made the bowl games suffer. There are matchups happening each year where there are legit concerns about backups in case of injury. The uniqueness of college football and bowl season is being suppressed by this new system.

There is a big difference for the program between 10 wins and 9 wins. The benefits of entering the off-season on a high note are real, too. I'm pretty disappointed that so many ND players have opted out.

Oregon State's kicker opted out. That's actually probably pretty significant. He was 13 of 14 on field goals. Doesn't look like anyone else on the roster has kicked FGs or kickoffs.
Independent Powerhouse isn't concerned. OSU will never have to kick FGs with their debilitating OL push on each snap. Going for two will be a layup. No need for kickoffs either when the defense doesn't budge an inch. 88-0.

He matches my energy,…

Anyway I never would have guessed OSU would have less opt outs than us given their overall situation. I thought it’d be a mass exodus,… doesn’t feel that way tho

Idk about that, OSU's losses/departures/optouts seem worse than ND's:

Jacob Hedberg: Oregon State has been hit hard on both sides of the ball by injury and player departures. Offensively the Beavers are really hurting. Starting the game at quarterback for Oregon State will be third-stringer Ben Gulbranson after starter DJ Uiagalelei and backup freshman phenom Aidan Chiles both hit the transfer portal. Gulbranson only has one pass attempt on the season.

Elsewhere, the Beavers will also be missing two of their top three pass catchers as speedster Anthony Gould announced his intention to declare for the NFL Draft and star sophomore tight end Jack Velling entered the portal, where he is expected to follow Jonathan Smith to Michigan State. Expect sophomore receiver Jimmy Valsin or true freshman Zachary Card to fill Gould’s role, while walk-on Bryce Caufield will likely step into Velling’s spot as one of two tight ends. The offensive line, which has been the strength of the Oregon State offense over the last few years will also be down three starters.

All-American right tackle Taliese Fuaga will not play as he preps for the NFL Draft, while right guard Heneli Bloomfield and left tackle Joshua Gray are both expected to be unavailable due to injury. At the tackles we are expecting redshirt freshman Jacob Strand and sophomore Tyler Morano to start, with Morano’s being the first start of his career.

The sixth man of the Beaver O-Line Grant Starck, who has started 4 games this year, is likely to fill in at right guard for Bloomfield. To make matters worse for Oregon State, star running back Damien Martinez will be unavailable for the game after an early December arrest for driving under the influence of marijuana. Martinez is arguably the top RB in the Pac-12 and his absence might sting the most of all.

Defensively, there aren’t as many losses but OSU will still be without three impact players. Leading tackler Easton Mascarenas-Arnold hit the portal last week, leaving a huge void in the middle of the OSU defense. Promising redshirt freshman Melvin Jordan has looked good in limited action this year and will likely step in next to Calvin Hart as a middle backer for the Sun Bowl.

The stepbrother of Mascarenas-Arnold, Akili Arnold also hit the transfer portal last week. The junior safety was tied for the team lead with two interceptions and was one of Oregon State’s best defenders. In his absence, walk-on Jack Kane who has started twice this year should step up.

The worse departure in the long-term sense for OSU was true freshman cornerback Jermod McCoy, who was absolutely fantastic down the stretch for OSU this season. McCoy intercepted two passes and has seen a flurry of offers from top programs since he entered the portal. With him unavailable, I am expecting fellow true freshman Andre Jordan to make the first start of his OSU career.

Down 8 starters on offense and arguably their 3 best defenders... sure ND is missing some pieces but ND's backups are objectively more talented than OSU's.

So we're down our starting QB, our two starting tackles, our AA RB, our top 3 WRs, our 1st and 3rd TE, a starting CB and at least one LB with one yet to make a final decision?

Am I forgetting anyone?

Trying to remember the dudes name that started all of this about 12-14 years ago when he announced he was sitting out to prepare for the NFL. I'd like to kick him in the balls.

I remember when there were only had about 10-12 bowls. The biggies were the Rose, Cotton, Orange and Sugar. Lesser bowls were Peach, Sun, Blue Bonnet, Gator, Liberty, Tangerine and Citrus.

That made playing in a bowl special, because you only had about 20 teams that could play.

Kicker opted out? Afraid of that groin pull 8 months before the NFL tryout with the 5% chance he makes the team?

Amid all those losses Oregon St still has top receiver Jesiah Irish. Watch out for the guy with Irish on the back of his jersey

All in, we have significantly more recruited talent behind the guys we have sitting out.

Though, I'd probably say Chatfield is one of their 3 best defenders and he's playing. He's a 9 sack guy, ranked 3rd in the Pac-12, and might make life very difficult for the newbie tackles.

Did a little digging and their back up kicker was the starter on 2021 and 2022. Not great numbers but its not like he's never kicked in a game. Not a lot of touchbacks so we should be able to run some kickoffs back vs them.

Kinda fun how after the Clemson game, half the board was all “Time for 2024. Sit the seniors, let the young dogs eat.” Now that the old dogs are sitting, we find reasons to complain about that too.
It’s how this board rolls.

Apparently the DA dropped the charges.
Of course they did. It's a lawless society in the ranks of CFB, HSFB, and every money making sport there is.
