Just finished reading the book Nomads by Anthony Sattin.

I recall there being a discussion of “greatest cultures” in this thread awhile back. On its face it’s kind of a ridiculous question to ask.

After reading Sattin’s book I would say there is a strong argument that the Nomadic cultures that sprang from the steppes of Eurasia are right there at the top.

First and foremost would be how the successive empires that sprung from those cultures connected east and west and how the idea of freedom of movement and association which were fundamental to those cultures allowed for trade, migration and the exchange of ideas to flourish.

Also, the Sami of Northern Europe and the Aborigines of Australia. Those cultures stretch back thousands of years, have seen empires and “great civilizations” come and go and still persist.

The key to their longevity? As James Cook put it in regards to the aborigines, “They live in a tranquillity which is not disturbed by the inequality of condition” and according to British historian Felipe Fernandez-Armesto “the reason for their success is no secret: they have survived because they have ‘lived with nature and within nature and haven’t tried to change it, haven’t tried to crush it, to rebuild it”.

Anyhow, very thought provoking read.

They're surely not making money on it, but how could they drop the token? I had that meal last time I was there for the first time.
The last CEO told the current CEO as he was taking over that he'd find him and kill him if he raised the price lol.

How much could a hot dog and soda cost them? I think the rotisserie chicken is the one they have to be losing money on.

I've never had the Costco hot dog, but Sam's Club has a similarly priced pizza for dirt cheap....and damn if it's not pretty fucking tasty. It's not Salvatori's Authentic Italian tasty, but it's like...$1.00 a slice or something crazy and I would have expected it to be dog shit at that price. It's pretty damn good in reality.

I haven't had Costco's hot dog or pizza but every time I shop there, there's a crowd waiting for their order to be called.

Seems a bit fake and not like true support if you pick and choose when and where you're supporting it.

There's no debate about whether or not we are in decline. Stay out of the blue states.

You've posted some garbage, but this might be the most disingenuous thing you've ever shared with us.

Yes avoid blue states. When you're passing through DC you might accidentally wander into a multi person conspiracy to block a medical facility and harass staff/patients.
“These 10 defendants have been held accountable for using force, threatening to use force and physically obstructing access to reproductive health care in the District of Columbia,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department will continue to protect both patients seeking reproductive health services and providers of those services. We will hold accountable anyone who seeks to unlawfully obstruct or block access to reproductive health services in our country.”

“Today, the final defendant was sentenced in an elaborate conspiracy by 10 people to intentionally and forcibly block patients and workers from accessing a reproductive health clinic while streaming it live online,” said Assistant Director Michael Nordwall of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division. “The FBI will not stand for anyone who violates federal laws causing destruction, injury and violent attacks like this one. We are dedicated to protecting the rights of all Americans to safely access medical services and ensuring providers can perform their duties freely.”

These defendants were convicted following three separate trials in 2023. Idoni is scheduled to be sentenced in a separate matter on July 30, following conspiracy and FACE Act convictions in an unrelated clinic blockade from Tennessee.

Evidence presented at trial established that the defendants used force and physical obstruction to execute a clinic blockade that was organized by the group’s leaders, Handy and Darnel. The defendants planned and organized the clinic invasion using social media, text messages and telephone calls, and several co-conspirators, including defendants Hinshaw, Goodman, Geraghty, Marshall, Bell, Harlow, Idoni and Smith traveled from northeast and midwestern states to participate in the blockade. Prior to the clinic incursion, the defendants met with other co-conspirators to plan their crime, which included making a fake patient appointment to ensure the group’s entry into the clinic, using chains and locks to barricade the facility and passively resisting their anticipated arrests to prolong the blockade. The clinic invasion was advertised on social media as a “historic” event that was live-streamed on Facebook. The defendants’ forced entry into the clinic at the outset of the invasion resulted in injury to a clinic nurse. During the blockade, one patient had to climb through a receptionist window to access the clinic, while another laid in the hallway outside of the clinic in physical distress, unable to gain access to the clinic.

The FBI Washington Field Office investigated the case.

Not going to speak to the other perpetrators, but watching video of this woman from before and after the incident I don't see 2 years being a fair sentence. She does seem to be wheelchair bound with several health issues, a 2 year prison sentence seems excessive considering I can't find any prior history for her. I doubt she was the one that barricaded the facility given her physical disabilities. She genuinely appears to be someone concerned about the unborn, she typically counsels young mothers about other options. She was obviously misguided on this incident, and I would leave the sentences for the others, but given the circumstances I think Harlow's sentence should have been reduced or downgraded to house arrest/probation.

Remember, this is the guy who thinks protestors should be shot for blocking traffic. There's something Qwhite different about this situation I can't put my finger on it.

(Two years does seem quite long for an old lady, just send her to the Villages in Florida and let her ride off into hell)

I'm not saying she was perfectly right, but this treatment from the judge is absurd.

Yes- blue cities and states will totally give the pass to their own and throw everything they can at their opponents. This was DC 4 years ago from this past weekend. Where is that prosecution? Left-wing reality is garbage, but it's not false.

Not shot. Ran over. You're putting people in danger, and people should be able to protect themselves. Protests on the highway have led to serious injuries and death, not to mention the dangers of blocking emergency vehicles. I don't care how white they are.

The problem is medical, fire, police emergencies.

My brother almost died from his appendix bursting. He literally would have died had some bozos blocked traffic, Costing us 15 minutes.

Somebody went into a diabetic coma in the NY subway awhile back but wasn't allowed to get past the protestors. I think they eventually 'negotiated' their way through. I may be wrong though.

I just don't understand the logic of blocking a highway for any cause. Do they think they are winning any new converts for "the cause" by pulling these stunts?

The ringleader Handy with the fetuses sounds like a real nutjob. Harlow is the old lady in the back praying in the video. The 2 years is excessive for her. In comparison, a sex crime of any degree below a first degree felony can get a sentence of 2 years on average. The same is true for aggravated assault, anything below a first degree felony on average will net 2 years or less.
