Good grief. Our country today would have folded in half during the Spanish flu of 1918 or even the 1957 Asian flu and 1968 Hong Kong flu.

What should we do, not even try to contain it? I’m curious where the line is between being proactive and overreacting.

They canceled half the college football season in 1918.

Well you can kind of understand that since up to 100 million people died from it right after millions had just died from ww1. 700,000 Americans died from it.

I think 70 million people did 1968 and over 100 thousand in the us alone. Did they cancel everything then?

NCAA cancelling all winter sports championships and spring sports.

Stopped at Kroger on the way home to get dog food. Place was a zoo. People shopping like we’ll all be quarantined soon.

I don’t know anything about 1968. Obviously they didn’t have total information when they made the decision in 1918. Your argument presupposes doing nothing was correct. People are likely to differ on the value and importance of a college basketball tournament.

My mom’s cousin’s sister’s best friend’s wife used to be in the medical field back in the 90’s and she said that this will be the worst pandemic the US has seen in nearly a century.... so u know it’s legit.

They didn't cancel anything and 70 million people died, and you're criticizing people for canceling stuff this time?

Big brain logic right here folks.

Last week you thought buying a timeshare was a good financial decision because you could pass a “deed” onto your kids. You’re an idiot.

Woahhhhhhh. Ouch. Koon at least said no. I said yes.

Uh...so why is nobody looking at the idea of using unemployment funds as opposed to making small businesses (who will have their revenue streams destroyed) pay to cover sick leave?

Anyhow, this total cluster fuck is a pretty good argument for a national healthcare system.

If you have 15 minutes, Joe has a great sit-down with a leader in infectious diseases that might scare you like It has me.

But we could always just watch Trump read from a script for our intelligence....

I still prefer “reading off a script provided by at least halfway intelligent people” Trump over “I’ve got a hunch and I’m usually right because I’m smarter than the experts” Trump

The one thing that I haven't heard or read about yet, this Is a serious event that the younger population hasn't experienced yet to this extent.

It's definitely not a 9/11 day type of event, but kids will remember this and If you were born after 1993 you'll probably think very much about this as life changing.
Our kids will probably remember this as the end times of their childhood. Hopefully they'll be the ones who find ways to prepare for future events.

Agree to disagree about what?

Are you trying to say that containment doesn't work? Or are you saying we should tough it out not contain it and let 100,000 people die like they did in 1968?

To be honest, I don't have an opinion either way about Our President. The minute I feel bad about something I see something positive and sometimes vise-versa.... Same with every single one since the 80's.
He has a positive attitude I guess and hates negative energy as a way of life, It's the only reason I see for his dismay.
I'm just saying, we've all been a bit duped. The President shouldn't be .

Finally had our season cancelled out here... but they are leaving schools open? Makes no sense. Just as much interaction in a school building as on a practice field. Need to close the schools too.

The hard thing about closing anything down is when does it end? because most all infectious disease professionals say this is a 3-6 month ordeal. Closing for 15-30 days isn't going to cut it. Closing for 3-6 months probably isn't feasable either. The impact on parents having to not work because kids aren't in school for month+ is crazy too. There is no winning right now.

15-30 days isn't going to be enough time to "stop" this virus. 6 months wouldn't be enough either. A vaccine isn't close enough. Both guys on JRE basically said 18 months is optimistic.

15-30 days might be enough time to flatten the curve though. Everyone is going to get covid-19 at some point over the next few years. It will be like the flu. Do you know anyone that has never had the flu? The idea is that if we can flatten the curve we can make sure everyone doesn't get it all at once. It's not an especially deadly virus, but we run into trouble if all of a sudden all of our healthcare facilities are overrun with patients coming in with it. That's when people will really start dying from it, or dying from other unrelated problems that aren't handled properly because of a lack of staff or they put off getting treated to avoid covid.

What I am seeing is not only a mob mentality, but a complete CYA mentality. They were discussing the possible legal ramifications if someone were to get ill so just error on the side of caution. My wife's company is closing Monday for two weeks. What will change in two weeks? There will more than likely be more cases than less so what do they decide to do then? Are they now covered if someone does get ill when they return.....well, the the authorities said it was OK......

I just watched a show that was saying all of our hospitals run normally at maximum capacity. I guess I should have known that because I have been with family members who were told we are waiting for a room to open up to admit them. Not sure why this is still true in this day and age in the US.
