I filled out my application to conceal carry last night and I'm getting my finger prints taken tomorrow. I'll probably be looking for a gun that is average in size (not as big as a 44 mag, but not a gun that a girl would put in her purse either) and packs a punch. My mind isn't completely made up yet so I'm open to listening to what kind go handgun you guys would/do carry. Any suggestions?

SIG P227 or SIG P220 .45

Or Glock 19 9mm or Glock 21 .45 with 3.5 lb trigger pull upgrade. Not sure you are familiar with Glock, but it is a safety mechanism (sort of) in the trigger which I despise.

Premium JHP ammunition in every major service caliber easily meets the FBI minimum benchmark of penetrating 12'' and expanding by .5'':

I'm partial to 9mm due to its ubiquity and low cost.

You can't go wrong with a polymer pistol manufactured by H & K, Glock, Smith & Wesson, or Springfield.

I just heard from my neighbors that some punks have been messing with cars in the neighborhood. I usually sleep with my guns unloaded but the guys threatened "we'll be back" when my neighbor ran them off last night.

My second gun is just a 20 gauge and the only ammo I have is bird shot. Is it even worth loading for my wife or should I just roll with my .38?

I picked up a Sig P229 this week.

I played around with a P226 Legion over the weekend. Fun gun. On sale for just under a grand.

I'm still trying to track down a H&K VP9 and a Walther PPQ to test out before actually purchasing my first 9mm. Going just on ergonomic feel, the VP9 wins with the PPQ coming in close second for me. Everything else is just "meh." I'm not an experienced enough shooter to fully respect and acknowledge a quality pistol in terms of recoil, trigger, etc though. Out of everything I've rented, if it felt good in my hand and I hit what I was aiming for within a few inches, I called that a victory.

I don't really want to spend over $750, and I'd prefer new, so the Sig is out of my range and the VP9 is at the ceiling.

was thinking of this exchange this past weekend.

My brother in law has an old evenrude motor. It was doing that stalling thing...made his boat the SS minnow just like you describe. He'd also paid for servicing...

Upon further inspection his fuel lines weren't sealing on the ports, allowing air in...because some genius decided to use mini tie wraps instead of the metal hose clamps at some point ...but it took us taking the thing apart to see it.

When you get those motors serviced...what are they actually doing? Can you follow the fuel lines completely w/o taking it apart? If not, think about an air leak at a connection as a possible contributor to your issue.

Hey sorry, phgreek, I just saw this post from a while back and realized I never responded.

I'm not sure what they "actually do" for each service. I haven't been involved in delivery or pick up (my in-laws did it). The motor is still sitting at the cottage. This summer, I'll re-visit the topic. In the meantime, I did purchase the Minn Kota 55. So either way, I'll be doing more fishing this summer than I did last.

Now I just need to get my 9mm and I'll have checked off both wants.

Question (which I'm sure has already been answered if I took the time to read through the entire thread), but I can't find anywhere nearby who offers the VP9 as a rental. I want to purchase this gun, as it by far "feels" the best in my hand, BUT how irresponsible would it be to just go ahead and get it considering I've yet to fire it? Lets be honest here, I'm a beginner so when people compare trigger break/reset, recoil, etc...I have no idea how to distinguish between what's good and bad. At this point in time, almost every gun I've fired has felt the same to my untrained senses. The way I see it, everything I've read/been told suggests that I can't go wrong with the VP9 and I've handled the gun in a shop numerous times at this point so I know I like it. Will someone like me truly benefit from firing it first since I don't even know how to compare it to others?

The counter-argument is that this is a significant purchase, so you should at least spend some time with it at a range before plunking down all that cash. But you've done the research and you like the way it feels. H&K pistols are more precise and reliable than any other straight out of the box. If there's no convenient way for you to test it first, I'd just go ahead and buy it.

I just bought it!

Rural King (of all places) had the base model listed at $599.99. I got it for $549.99. Can't beat that price for a VP 9. Impossible to pass it up. Looking forward to breaking her in this weekend.

Dude, a Legion under a grand! Those are sweet looking.

Had three failure to load occurrences this weekend during my range session, breaking in the new VP 9. Used Blazer Brass 115g 9mm luger ammo. Did some searching online and it's a mixed bag of answers as to why it happened and what I should do. Most common response was to use a different ammo and 124g.

What are IE's gunslingers thoughts?

Something is wrong. My thought is to disassemble and clean then reassemble and try again. Mine will eat anything and very reliably doing so. I know other guys who use them as service guns and rec use who love them and report no issue.

If it still doesn't act right with other ammo after a cleaning, I'd give HK a call. Their customer service is great.

Yeah, HK is a premium gun manufacturer. You may have just got a dud. I'm sure HK would be on it to replace/repair right away.

In other news, my wife picked up a Springfield XDS 9mm. Pretty sweet looking gun, and compact enough to carry in her purse.

I'm going to try out some different ammo before I call a brand new HK a dud.

Here's a common theme I've found elsewhere:

Most HKs have pretty stiff springs from the factory as they are designed as military duty guns and as such are designed to shoot 124gr NATO spec ammo. As a result, some of the light weight 115gr target ammo that is available can be problematic when the recoil spring is new. This isn't a fault of the gun, but of underpowered ammo. After several hundred rounds of heavier weight or higher powered ammo, things generally loosen up and those lighter load work just fine.

I run pretty much 124gr exclusively anyways so I never had an issue, but it's not uncommon.

I don't think its a dud. I think something may be misaligned, out of whack, not assembled right. Some stooge in the store may have put it back together.

Took the wife to the range to try out some different 9mm today and she settled on the Springfield Xd9. So after we left the range we went to the local gun shop and picked one up!

Any of you shot a Taurus Judge? Shot a shotgun shell out of it? How's the kick?

Don't know if there's any former Boy Scouts here, but I got to shoot an old timey black powder rifle at Philmont out in New Mexico. 120 miles of Rocky Mountain trails across 10 days, purifying your own water and all that. Most camps we stayed at were nothing more than a clearing, not even an outhouse in sight. There were a few camps that had activities and such like Rock Climbing, Panning for Gold, etc. The black powder rifle shooting was one of the cooler ones. I remember it had a kick and was pretty damn loud (But some of that may have been amplified by the terrain/mountains). Can't tell you more about the gun than that, looked a lot like this and the loading process was the same:

As far as guns I own myself, I've got some Turkish made TriStar 12 gauge pump shotgun. I've only taken it to the range a few times, I mostly just keep it for home defense and to scare any potential boyfriends my daughter may have in the coming years.

I have. Not a huge fan because I have fairly large hands and the grip is pretty short for the amount of recoil on the gun.

Anyone have an opinion on the S&W bodyguard 380 and the S&W shield 9mm?

I love the Shield 9mm. I picked up the Performance Center Shield 9mm in January and it has been by carry gun ever since. The Performance Center model has a ported barrel, improved trigger, and fiber optic sights (they also make a model with night sights).

I'm picking up an AR pistol in about a week. I'm debating on putting a binary trigger in it. Have any of you used a binary trigger before or have an opinion on it? For those of you who don't know what it is, it is a trigger that basically makes your gun fully auto (but not technically fully auto).

Here's what an AR15 with a binary trigger sounds/looks like

I have a Springfield TRP Operator in tactical gray coming in about a month. It will be my first 1911 so I'm excited about that.

I have a S&W Shield 40 that I use for my CC. I bought the extension for the magazine so it fits my hand better. I love the size of the gun because it fits inside my waistband nicely. I went with the .40 over the 9mm simply because I live in NY and at the time the state was cracking down on all things gun related. It was near impossible to find any .22 ammunition and the 9mm was also selling fast. I was worried it would be difficult to buy any ammunition for the 9mm so I went with the .40. Also NY was restricting magazines to a maximum of 7 bullets and that is the max for the .40. I believe the 9mm holds a maximum of 8. If I were to buy one today I would probably take a longer look at the 9mm over the .40 but I don't regret buying the .40 at all.

i have the .45 shield - love it. wasnt a fan of the 9mm in the shield and we played around and shot the .22 as well - terrible. .40 was nice but .45 is where it was with the shields.
