College Football Playoff Expansion?

In sports, "relevance" is not based on winning. It is based on fan interest, which generates revenue. ND generates lots of revenue. The Maple Leafs, Red Sox, and Cubs have had very long title droughts but were and are among the most valuable (therefore "relevant") franchises in their sports, even during the periods where they did not win titles. In college football, this has been true, at one point or another, of Texas, OSU, USC, Michigan, Georgia, Clemson, etc., etc...

This reminds me of the people that go out of their way to express how they dislike the NBA or soccer. I don't care for NASCAR, but I don't go around constantly proclaiming it. I would not go into a NASCAR thread on a message board and proclaim that I don't like it nor make posts in that thread mocking it.

Media pundits can't wait to talk about Notre Dame Football and the last time they won a championship. There at least half a dozen teams in the SEC that haven't sniffed one, if ever, and probably never will. Yet we hear about how collectively awesome this conference is at every possible turn of a media cycle during the season and around signing day.

Stephen A Smith is just garbage. That clip felt like clickbait. "Lets take a bunch of time up to discuss how irrelevant this team is, certainly we won't get a reaction because they're irrelevant." He incorrectly predicted something like 6 straight NBA Finals champs from the Heat dynasty to Lebron landing in LA. He obviously doesn't do his prep work either.

Stephan A is a racist tool bag, but he's 100% right here. Thankfully with the very recent evidence of the Admin investing somewhat, it appears they know he's right. First step of fixing a problem it acknowledging you have one.

36 years and no BCS win ever is utterly embarassing and any self respecting ND fans should want way more than what they've put on the table.

Nobody questioned the Red Sox relevancy during the Bambino curse, nor the Cubs during their drought, and those were a hell of a lot longer. He's right that there's an ugly title drought, but the relevancy question is just clickbait.

What is "relevance"? TV mentions or other teams/fans/programs actually thinking you're a threat? I view it as the latter. I have a large group of friends who are CFB die hards one way or another, ND is nothing but a laugh to them, and you can only talk about 2012 Oklahoma for so long.

This is why people despise you. ND was in the BCS championship and the playoffs twice. Even getting shit canned in those games is more than 99% of all other college football teams. That’s not even mentioning how many double digit win seasons they have had in the past 10 years. They are relevant. Should we as ND fans expect more, yes, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been relevant. Sorry you have ignorant friends that are dbags. You should find new friends.

So our greatest football accomplishments over 30 years is getting blown out in all 3 games? This is why few take ND seriously. I don't need new friends, we need real accomplishments.

And no it's not more impressive than "99%". Apathy always points to "well it could be worse!", and apathy breeds losing. But maybe I'm guilty of having too much respect for ND.

Was the 2013 Michigan State team a joke? Right or wrong, their fans to this day still seem to think they would have won the natty if they hadn't tripped up in South Bend. There's a number of Top 25 matchups that are well regarded, you don't have to hang onto 2012 OU. Quite frankly, I don't think they were as good as we were led to believe. They had already lost to K-State and would get waxed later by A&M.

You don't think Georgia thought we were a threat when we took them down to the wire twice? What about OSU? While we were embarrassed in one playoff game against Clemson, Ohio State has shown up three times in the Top 10 Biggest Blowouts of the CFB Era. We've not reached the top of the mountain yet, but we're a lot closer than 95% of the other teams I would say, and they would love to have our brand presence and following. You can count on one hand basically the number of teams that have won the playoff. If your buddies include Bama, Clemson, Georgia fans...you need to pick better friends.

There is plenty to be irritated with regarding ND over the last 30 years. Since Kelly came, the product on the field has generally been pretty good. Like most teams, it usually has a couple holes.

Regarding relevance, if the talking heads are bringing up Notre Dame...then ND is relevant. Tough to call a premier brand with multiple playoff appearances and a couple close calls irrelevant.

As for friends "laughing", that's just them busting balls.

I'm not miserable at all, but I do expect far more for ND football than they've produced over the last 30 years. IDK why someone would think acknowledging reality makes someone miserable.
