Agreed. Not to mention we will get a ton of rematches if they insist on keeping the conference championship games or if there was a regular season matchup (Bama vs LSU, UM vs OSU, etc) that pits 2 contenders head-to-head.
Theoretically we could now get two teams playing three times in the same season.

First round games will be on-campus. I guess logically the second round games would be too, hosted by the four teams that get first round byes. We would've hosted a playoff game three of the last four years.

I'm not sure it has been officially worked out but I'd bet semifinals and the title game will be at big bowl sites. Though yeah there are more of those than there are games to go around every year. They should probably pick two permanent semifinals (Rose and Sugar?) and let whoever wants to bid to host the title game, Super Bowl style.

If anyone is interested in a really good breakdown on how this change effects college football as an entirety the podcast College Football Enquirer spent their entire hour yesterday breaking it down. It is well worth the listen.

I would assume that the quarters and semis would all be in NY6 bowls.

That would mean the top four seeds don’t get an on-campus game. Which, maybe is a fair trade for a bye week, but maybe isn’t. Maybe also the Peach Bowl and the Cotton Bowl don’t really need to be a thing anymore.

They'll stick around... too much give-and-take between the bowls and the college football powers for the presidents/AD's not to take care of the bowl CEO's.

Gotta keep that easy $1M+/year salary to do a month's worth of work (if that) flowing for the heavy hitters.

I'll take the Cotton Bowl being a thing over the Peach or even Sugar personally.... spread out the few remaining meaningful bowls as much as possible. Let's not have them all clustered.

This would be interesting right outside is Kansas St and Notre Dame. Kansas St win a win out clinches the Big 12 and is in with TCU also staying in. ND with a win over USC likely plays themselves in as well. Bid stealer UNC and Iowa/Purdue/Illinois still alive too. Some G5 upset still alive too.

Read that the Rose was basically the last obstacle, and they were basically told "Get in line, or you won't be part of the TV revenue discussion during the next set of negotiations." Something along those lines.

Inevitable but I'm not a fan at all. This is a money grab, nothing more, trying to mimic the NFL, dilutes the regular season, and lets average teams into a playoff. This also increases risk of kids getting injured with more games.

I love it! I always like any format that ensures the best teams have a chance to win it all in the end. I think it will be super fun and allow bigger non conference matchups for teams.

I used to feel this way. I've come around to it now because although the regular season will be diluted, the bowl season will actually be fun again.

The way it stands, every bowl outside of the playoff is now a glorified spring game. From my selfish fan perspective, it will be a blast to put some stakes on post-season games. Players won't sit out. Plus we will get to see playoff games in actual college stadiums. Can you imagine getting LSU vs. ND in South Bend in December in 2024?

It is going to create some totally novel situations with cold weather playoff games that will only favor the teams in the north.

I think once you go playoff route then you need to have the best system possible. 4 teams just aren’t enough, IMO.

The current format is worse than the BCS. You can’t change mind

How do you think this will impact regular season? I think you can make the case that it will increase importance of late season games. Top teams will be jockeying for playoff byes and then conference championships are more interesting because of playoff implications for teams like KState, LSU, Washington, etc.

12 team playoffs literally open the door for a 2 or even 3 loss team to get hot and win it all. My max for expansion has always been 6 (top two get a bye) or 8. That's it. Look at the current rankings and make a case for any team ranked worse than 8 to be given an opportunity to win a national championship. You can't.

Not a fan of expansion but should result in some interesting cross-country matchups. Tournament every year is more or less the new standard for elite programs.

This has nothing to do with, ‘legit champs’ or ‘best teams’… it’s a watering down of the entire thing for money,…

Give me home playoff games in December!!

What is the schedule like for this format? Do the top 6 seeds get home field advantage for round 1? If so, in any given year you'd potentially get what, two or three? Michigan, OSU, and ND??...Are these the only playoff caliber programs from the north capable of being ranked that highly come year's end in any given season?

The top four teams get a first round bye. Teams ranked 5-8 host the first round on campus.
