ESPN glorifies stars and is a highlight show for casual fans. Their model is give people what they want to hear and see. I see Notre Dame like the Lakers, either you hate them or love them, either way people are tuned in to see them win or lose and their is no in between. Same would apply for the Yankees. The problem is there is no in between.

That is why ESPN sucks. Also:

They out Bruce Feldman for Craig James. They put out gag orders when West was sleeping with Lebrons mom. They have Jalen Rose, Sage Steele, and Doug Collins as their NBA analysis. The list goes on and on, on why ESPN sucks. Brian Kenny is not retained. They have a show called "The Experts" that give amateurish analyst. They have turned the Heisman award into a popularity contest and clown show. They cover more about bad things players do than the good that they do simply to feed their shallow viewers. They hire Ray Lewis who is about as interesting as a piece of plywood.

There are bias to a degree, but I think mainly due to timing myself. They berated the BIG10 only for their team to utterly curbstomp ALA into the ground, making them look like little fairies who can't tackle. If anything, they should be mocking the SEC for their unwillingness to come out West and face a tough opponent and their cheesy schedules. Tennessee and LSU are the only SEC teams who come to mind have actually played a West Coast non conference home-n-home that I can recall in the last 5 years. No, they give them a free pass but they are the SEC and they have economic interests involved. Clear bias for the SEC. Not to mention SEC only plays 8 conference games, and many teams have easy SEC schedules.

wizards, why do you hate freedom???

... and puppies!

Let's let wizards breathe a little bit, shall we? ESPN does pay his bills, and he is going to look for the best in them because of that; just like the rest of us would do. I disagree with him, too, but I respect his loyalty. He's not claiming that they are the second coming of Christ, just that they aren't the ANTI-Christ. I am not convinced, but I won't belabor the point with him.

I understand he wants to go to bat for not only his company, but to combat all of us being so terribly biased towards ND...

I just wish he would do us the courtesy and quit playing dumb about ESPN protecting the interests of the SEC and reinforcing the SEC 'brand' when, in reality, it's bullsh*t.

@IrishLax seems to have a better understanding of how FPI is calculate than I do. Maybe he can answer. All I know is that "returning starters" is a metric in the preseason rankings and Golson was tagged as our "returning starter" at the quarterback position.

In season FPI is pretty decent. I don't like it as much as some other advanced metrics, but it's not the worst. It's pretty impossible to call it "biased" in its current format.

But pre-season FPI is very flimsy, IMO. At least they're transparent with the "formula"... it's listed on ESPN's site, I'll see if I can grab it later.

How the hell is LSU number 5 in the preseason? Do we return more starters? Did we beat them in the bowl game? What are the recruiting class rankings the last 3 years? Is there any metric that makes the number 5 and us 18?

My beef with all this is when Mizz beats LSU.. they will shoot from unranked to #10

Ohio State leads rankings in ESPN's Preseason FPI - Stats & Info - ESPN

In 2015, Notre Dame is expected to return a Power 5-high 19 starters, including its starting quarterback. Despite finishing 35th in overall efficiency last year, Notre Dame’s unusually high number of returning starters, as well as solid recruiting and a sixth-year head coach, has the Irish ranked seventh heading into next season.

In other words, we had shitty efficiency last season. That's a statistical measure, not subject to bias or subjectivity. Even then, we were ranked in the top ten with Golson. Golson left, we fell. Not because ESPN thinks we're going to suck, but because preseason FPI counts returning starters as an important metric.

And to answer the specific question, LSU is returning 17 starters. One them happens to be the best running back on the planet.

LSU, plus Ole Miss at 9 are huge LOLs. Did they forget about the two ass kickins Ole Miss took at the end of the season.

But that Ole Miss team that got their ass kicked has a few starters coming back to get their ass kicked again. They take that into account apparently!!!

I was sitting in a bar in Indy after a trip to watch the NW/ND game. Ark was giving a beat down to LSU that fine evening. I thought to myself then, they would run over Ole Miss like the frauds they were. That game (Ark / Ole Miss) took a little sting out of the Louisville loss that night.

Mississippi Smishissippi... both teams were frauds last year... Surprised Mississippi State, the rest of the West, and half the East is not in the top 10

Wiz, I call BS of you working at ESPN. I mean we all know ESPN hates ND. So either you don't work there, or you aren't a fan. They wouldn't hire an ND fan. Just sayin

I agree. They're nonsense. The article from ESPN explaining them basically says "this is nonsense." Any and all preseason metrics are nonsense. My only point is that this particular nonsense is the product of a buggy formula, not any intent on the part of ESPN to prop up the SEC. It's the "intent" I've been arguing against, not the "inaccuracy."

So they didn't purposely concoct a "buggy formula" (your words) to prop up a certain sect of teams? It certainly appears they did IMO, and this is coming from someone who thinks ND shouldn't be in the top 15 in any kind of poll, regardless of metrics. I don't feel slighted ND isn't up there, but I feel brainwashed some of the others are up there.

For the record wiz, I've never stated that ESPN was unfair to ND. I've always stated the opposite actually. Some dudes hate us, but some love us. When we're good, they talk about us. And when we are bad, they talk about us.

Also for the record, still waiting for your response on the CFL/SEC show, for two days in a row now, DURING the ACC's media day, which you stated would be all about the ACC lol. It's beyond a bias that you just refuse to admit.

EDIT: Dang, my bad! Just got to the final five minutes of college football live, where they were gracious enough to show a one minute interview with Jimbo Fisher (after devoting the entire show to interviews w SEC coaches, after 6 straight days of all-SEC coverage on CFL). Yeah dude, you're spot on.

So we lost our QB who combined for 20+ turnovers and still have the QB who mostly led us to a win over their number 5 team. We still return 18 starters and also a ton of backup depth. The best RB on the planet is.......conjecture at this point. He absolutely decimated our team but we had lost....11 starters at that point? And we still beat them!

Are we allowed to call Jaylon the best LB on the planet or is that inaccurate?

How have the LSU recruiting class ranked to ours? Are they that much better than us over the last 3 years?

Understand, I think we are fairly ranked. I don't need us to start at a high number, I'm interested in ending at a high number. I just don't see how LSU is ranked so much higher than us given the conclusion of our meeting.

Last year, the buggy formula predicted three of the four playoff teams from the preseason.

LOL. Just won't stop will you? Mostly everyone picked those teams last year. C'mon man. To have Arkansas, Ole Miss and A&M in the TOP 10 is beyond stupid.
