Elko didn't put together championship level defenses and got Top 5 $$$ and I expect Lea to field a D this year that's better than any Elko ever guided.

I think the fact that this is his first year as a DC buys ND a little time but other jobs will be offered to him starting next year if he produces. I could see him knocking it out of the park in '19 & '20 and Vandy come calling at $4-5M when they can Mason. That seems more probable to me than a high paying DC gig luring him away.

No worries at all of the Vandy scenario above playing out- they won't pay that much for a coach, even more so for a HC that would be a total unknown.

Mason had a $2.5M base in '15 minus TV/Radio, shoe, camps, performance bonuses and built in sponsorship deals... and then he received a raise and extension last summer. With salaries going up every year this is easily attainable.

Also Vandy doesn't care about "total unknowns" Mason had the same credentials as Lea would have if he knocks it out of the park as ND's DC in '19 & '20. Mason was Stanford's DC for 2 years.

Vandy is perfectly content to collect their ess eee cee royalty and contract money...and then apply as little as they possibly have to to build their football program. Vanderbilt wouldn't even have a spring game or scrimmage, despite the sec network asking them to reconsider, so they could televise it. Nope, Vandy didn't care about the broadcast that the network was contractually obligated to air- all free publicity and exposure they decided to pass on. Why? Because the powers that be at Vanderbilt don't give 2-shits about their football program.

And yes, Clark Lea is a total unknown as a head coach at Power 5 school, just like every other coach who hasn't had a head job before.

Clark Lea may or may not leave ND sometime in the future, but it won't be because Vanderbilt comes calling with a shitload of money.

I was driving back from DC today, passed Annapolis, and thought about the Navy game for Clark Lea.

Call me crazy, but will the Navy game be the hardest for him this season given his lack of experience?

Keep writing about it all you want, but Vandy isn't going to spend that much money on Clark Lea, or probably any other coordinator that's never coached a down of football in his life either. Unless things change drastically (new chancellor, new activities director, new board, new donors, new endowment director, and a fundamentally altered and different viewpoint of how Vanderbilt perceives football and athletics).

It's surprising how many people throw info out there, even with peripheral stats, but have no idea what is going on with Vanderbilt football and how it actually operates.

Lea hasn't be a DC for one game yet and we're already worried about losing him? lol

He was involved with the game plan last year, so it's not like this will be something totally new for him. Having Gilman will help, but I think it will help Gilman more than it will help the team. Hopefully Gilman will be able to look at our D alignment and know which option Navy has a tendency to go to against the alignment with down and distance factored in.

Yea, it can't be stressed enough how many less snaps this defense would be on the field for if the refs called the egregious holding penalties. And not even referring to the ones where you're like, well, kinda, maybe that was a hold. Just the really bad holding, tackles, drag downs, double team bear hugs, etc. Vandy and BSU would be getting backed up and punting with any semblance of actual referring.

I truly felt that in the early going of the BSU game they just weren't calling it because, you know, it's David vs. Goliath. But they never called it even when the game got close. I assumed that was a one off situation, nope. They let Vandy do the same thing all game long. I have to imagine ND sent something in after those two games. You just can't play the game like that.

Completely agree with the lack of far too obvious holds not being called. I think it maybe a new directive from the NCAA to reduce flags to speed up games. Other than that, I can't see a reason for it, because they are far to obvious for the officials who are actually looking right at it to miss.

I know that we've been pretty open about how impressed we've been by the defense so far, but Clark Lea deserves a lot of credit. I still think Arcega-Whiteside is overrated, but I know I'm in the minority.
