I was unsure if that had already been posted but I didn't know PFF graded out Tillery so well versus LSU. That's a pretty big deal.

I mentioned it in the Game Day thread that I thought Tillery had a very good game. On our second sack Tillery completely blew up LSU's OL by driving the guard into their tackle, which happened to free up whoever made the sack. It was impressive, but he was making other plays throughout the game too. I was pleasantly surprised.

Makes you wonder with that lower body strength how he would have done if he had stayed as OL...would he have started in place of Glinch at LT and maybe have his draft spot?

On the other hand, try picturing our defensive line this year without him.

This should fire some folks up:

FootballScoop
USC: Offensive coordinator Tee Martin has signed a multi-year extension to remain at USC. “I’m just excited to be here at USC, where the future is so bright, and working for somebody the caliber of Clay Helton,” Martin told ESPN. “There were some other opportunities, but you don’t leave USC for a lateral move. I want to help us get to that next level, and everything is in place here to do that.”

Prolly doesn't hurt that Helton's seat is considerably cooler than BK's.

We'll see about that after week 5. USC had a good 11-3 season but lucked out considerably in terms of their schedule:

v. Western Michigan (6-6 MAC school) W 49-31
v. Stanford (9-5) W 42-24
v. Texas (7-6) W 27-24 2OT
@ California (5-7) 30-20
@ Washington St (9-4) L 27-30
v. Oregon St (1-11) W 38-10
v. Utah (6-6) W 28-27
@ Notre Dame (10-3) L 14-49
@ Arizona St (7-6) W 48-17
v. Arizona (7-6) W 49-35
@ Colorado (5-7) W 38-24
v. UCLA (6-7) W 28-23
v. Stanford (9-5) W 31-28

v. Ohio State (12-2) L 7-24

In 14 games, 5 of them were against teams with 8 or more wins. ND played 8 teams with 8 or more wins out of only 13 games. Of which, USC lost both games against the only two teams to finish with double digit wins (us and Ohio State) by a total margin of 73-21. 9 of their 11 wins came against teams that finished 7-6 or worse on the year. This was also with a likely future top 3 pick in the NFL draft at QB.

Helton will have his work cut out for him. Back to back road trips to Palo Alto and Austin will not be easy, and then having the Pirate pay a visit after that and before a trip to Tuscon. All with a new starting QB. Definitely far from ideal.

Clark Lea in-depth on the moment he became Notre Dame's new DC

On Sunday, UND.com released a story on the hiring of new defensive coordinator Clark Lea, which includes quotes from him about the day he was promoted.

On Jan. 9, Notre Dame announced that it was promoting linebackers coach Clark Lea as its new defensive coordinator.

Today, UND.com released a story on that process, which comes from Lea's perspective and the moment he was offered the job to run the Fighting Irish defense.

The story discusses a phone call from head coach Brian Kelly to Lea shortly after the news had broken that Mike Elko was leaving for Texas A&M to fill the the opening as defensive coordinator.

"He reached out to me and reassured me that he wanted me to be here," says Lea of Kelly. "He had a lot going on in his world at that moment, so the call meant a lot to me. ... And I'm stumbling off the ice on my skates, taking that call.

"So the conversation with Coach Kelly was more about him just checking that I felt personally ready to take this step in my career and understanding all that goes into this position at this university," said Lea. "I really had a year to interview for the job without knowing."

As noted in the story, Lea then received a second phone call from Kelly, which came with a job offer to replace Elko.

"I was picking up my kids at ECDC (Early Childhood Development Center, a pre-school on the Notre Dame campus). I stepped into one of the empty classrooms to have this conversation-it was all so surreal," says Lea. "Then we all went out for lunch at Cre-Asian (a restaurant a few blocks from campus), and my wife Allison and I had a chance for a short celebration. Short only because my wheels were already churning, focused on the work that was ahead."

Lea had officially replaced Elko, his good friend and former co-worker, as the new defensive coordinator. Once the news became public, he was hearing from a ton of friends and family.

"You're hearing from high school friends and high school coaches, college friends and college coaches. I even received a special call from Brad Gioia, the headmaster of my high school," said Lea.

I can understand not being sure about him being the DC and having no experience. But at the same time he has coach with a good DC at wake and here. So he seems like a smart guy he just need to put his touches on an existing defense. But shouldn’t we at least give him a shot to succeed?

Is THIS what Prister says in the piece????

If not, who are you responding to with this post?

Even if he’s dealing with campers that won’t end up with the Irish, he tries to make them better. From a personality standpoint, this seems like a homerun hire.

Now, a lot is riding on his ability to get the talent on this defense to produce at the level most think they can. But even without that, I just really enjoy the way Lea handles himself in interviews. Every time he talks, I find myself more thankful that he's our DC.

Agree. I love Lea's interviews. He seems so poised and fatherly. But he must couple that with having a penchant for game planning/play calling. So far, so good.

I’d root for this guy even if he wasn’t Irish. I hope the outcome this year rewards his leadership and loyalty to the players.

Why would he take a demotion at this point? Only way I see him back with Elko is if Elko is a HC next1-3 years.

He said poached like Elko, not by Elko. And I’d hope that he shows a bit more loyalty than Elko. BK took a huge gamble on Lea by promoting him to DC. Few coaches get their first shot at a coordinator position at a premiere football program like ND.

If he's good, he will probably get poached like Elko.

Probably not for awhile. Elko got poached for top 5 DC money. Lea will have to put together championship level defenses for multiple years before someone is willing to pay him that. And it sounds like folks around ND love this guy so if he produces, we’ll slowly increase his pay to keep it competitive.

agreed -

If BK doesn't go anywhere, I believe Elko (and Long) to be here a while.

Elko didn't put together championship level defenses and got Top 5 $$$ and I expect Lea to field a D this year that's better than any Elko ever guided.

I think the fact that this is his first year as a DC buys ND a little time but other jobs will be offered to him starting next year if he produces. I could see him knocking it out of the park in '19 & '20 and Vandy come calling at $4-5M when they can Mason. That seems more probable to me than a high paying DC gig luring him away.

Yep totally agree. The goal for major programs is not to keep their coordinators forever. It's to have them perform well and get hired as head coaches at programs like Vandy. Then you start over, but the job is seen as more prestigious cause the last guy springboarded it into a P5 HC gig. Fans that are only pleased with a Venables situation are gonna be unhappy 99% of the time.

Elko situations (and Solomon situations in basketball) are the ones we have a right to be upset about. But upward moves? Tell the guy congrats and move on.

Whether it’s for a HC or DC gig, point is, it’s probably not for multiple years.
