This isn't about Pete being demoted. It's about getting Lake reps at DC play caller so he can move on. He got passed over for the bigger jobs than he has now because he's never been the play caller. One year of calling the D and he'll be a HC next year, though unless Leach moves on, McIntyre gets canned in Boulder or hopefully Shaw moves to the NFL... the PAC has all fresh HC's.

Takes a pretty confident individual to do what Pete K's doing here but he's in no hurry to leave. I predict he'll be the Sun Devils' next HC after Herm goes back to Bristol. Mark that one down.

Too bad the cards will never work out for a run at ND. He could have shown some around here that there are still relatively young guys out there that still hold ND above all else.

I realize why they are doing it, but it's certainly a short term demotion. No other way around it. He may not lose pay but he's certainly losing responsibilities, which for a lot of competitors, would be a big deal.

Top Passing Defenses in FBS Football and people involved in coaching them

1) Brian Smith - Michigan DB Coach - Hired as Rice DC 12/12/17
3) Pete Golding - UTSA DC/DB Coach - Hired by Alabama
4) Jim Leonhard - Wisconsin DC/DB Coach
5) Jake Dickert - Wyoming S Coach - First FBS job (32yo), works under Scottie Hazelton (DC/LB)
6A) Bob Shoop - Tennessee DC/S Coach - Hired as Mississippi St DC
6B) Charlton Warren - Tennessee CB Coach - Hired by Florida
7) Derrick Ansley - Alabama DB Coach - Hired by Oakland Raiders
9) Alex Grinch - Wazzu DC/DB Coach - Hired by Ohio State
10) Mo Linguist - Minnesota DB Coach - Hired by Texas A&M
11) Matt Guerrieri - Duke S Coach - 6 seasons at Duke (29yo), also Recruiting Coordinator
12) Ron English - Mississippi St S Coach - Hired by Florida
13) Greg Brown - Auburn DB Coach - 60yo who's been coaching forever
14) Nick Howell - Virginia DC/DB Coach - 37yo who's been alongside Bronco for 11 seasons
15) Noah Joseph - Indiana S Coach - 40-41yo in his 4th season
16) Julius Brown - Utah State DB Coach - 36-37yo

Other big time secondary units would include the one at Temple which was 2nd in the nation last season in Pass Defense (Taver Johnson). Ephraim Banda is a young big time recruiter at UM (hard to pry him away), Marc Mattioli at Vanderbilt has led a strong unit, Demetrice Martin is one of the best recruiters in the country, period. If we're strictly looking at college from this list that I know of with an actual shot to land them, I'd guess

1) Demetrice Martin
2) Taver Johnson
3) Matt Guerrieri
4) Marc Mattioli
5) Noah Joseph
6) Jake Dickert
7) Julius Brown

Any other names to look at?

That’s impressive. Thanks. Also it’s telling that eight of the first 12 names on this list have been hired away for better jobs. Maybe let’s make it nine?
Can’t claim to have heard of Guerrieri but I do like the idea of a 29 year old who knows how to recruit for Duke and who knows the ACC.

It's not, more than likely this is a "version" of the truth where he was offered a gig as a DB coach with a co-DC name attached to it, or something like that. But zero chance Bama and A&M went to him and offered him their DC positions out right.

Right there is a 0.0% chance that Bama offered him the DC job, period. Much less that he "turned it down."

If Bama offered me the DC job right now I'd turn it down. I don't need that kinda stress in my life.

If Bama offered me $4.5 million (Pruitt's salary x 3 years) for essentially one year of work since I'd be fired for being a football dumbass, I'd take that without question.

They could hire me for $1.5M, and fire me after a single day on the job, using the "Really Really Not Great" clause to avoid paying me any of the salary...

I would then make millions on my book. It would be a gritty, hyper-realistic, minute-by-minute tell-all; a dramatic exposé into the dirty world of Bama football, dishing on all of the against-the-rules stuff I saw in my one day on the job.

Given Coney, Tillery an Bonner’s decisions to all come back, Clark Lea will have all the tools he needs to succeed next season. The schedule also sets up nicely for Lea to get his feet wet against a series of mediocre to bad offenses. Losing Elko still hurts, but nowhere near what it did two weeks ago. Just need to hit a solid triple on the safety coach hire and we’ll really be cooking with gas.

I agree with the tools comment, but I don't have near as much confidence about that Michigan game as others on here. Is their offense really that bad even with how they recruit?

I think they could certainly develop into a good offense over the course of next year. Given how they finished statistically last season, however, it’s difficult to imagine them coming into a hostile night game and setting the world on fire in their season opener. I’m far more concerned about us finding a way to move the ball against what should be a stacked UM defense.

I was unsure if that had already been posted but I didn't know PFF graded out Tillery so well versus LSU. That's a pretty big deal.

Something that was brought up on Irish Illustrated's podcast the other day vis a vis the Safety coach hire. The guys were talking about Taver Johnson (Temple's Co-DC/Safeties coach) as a candidate and his experience was listed as a plus to help Lea and Lyght. But an even bigger feather in his cap was Temple's performance vs. Navy this year: Navy vs. Temple - Box Score - November 2, 2017 - ESPN

52 rushes for 136 yards, good for 2.6 yards per carry. Sign him up!

I like the Louisiana coaching experience. It could really help us make some inroads there on the recruiting trail.
