I might be alone in this, but I feel like there's a ton of risk with this move. Elko's defense was about being simple and putting guys in the position to play fast and make plays. I always thought for a system like this to work, our DC needs to be outsmart the opposing OC and Elko has proven he could do that. With Lea we can't be sure.

This also means that we basically have one combined year of coordinator experience for our OC & DC. I never thought I would say this but I hope that Kelly is more involved with the defense next year.

Lea has a masters from Vanderbilt. You don't get that being an idiot.

Thats different than being football smart or most coaches would have Ivy League degrees instead of coming out of no name colleges.

I think him going to Vandy does have the advantage that he probably understands the intelligence level and academic load of our players more than other coaches.

Very excited, by far the best move in regards to keeping scheme and with recruiting. I wonder how much we're paying for him

Give him a modest raise year one and more in year two. This guy is very fortunate to be blessed with this opportunity at this level so quickly. He could have gone another 10 years to get a gig like this. As far as Elston is concerned if he was such a hot commodity he would have already left. Throw him a bone with a nice raise too and make everyone happy. I doubt he will get a better gig at a school of Notre Dames stature. I want to think there is a value that you can’t put a dollar figure to coaching at the center of the college football universe. It’s not like rage cost of living around South Bend is high. $350k gets you a palace while $950k get me 1600 square feet on SoCal. I think Lea will work harder with more energy than the self serving Elko. My money is on ND finishing better than Jumbo Fish and Smelko next year.

So where did the genius Elko go?

This was the right hire. Will this be a great hire? Time will tell, but many of the boxes are checked. To be a great college DC you must:

- Be respected by the players – Check
- Put in work in recruiting – Check
- Have a digestible scheme so you can plug and play – Check
- Be able to apply your game plan on a week by week basis. This is heavy film study of each opponent, and the ability to apply it in a few days. Does Lea have the football smarts for this? Does he have the work ethic for this? Can he communicate it on the fly? This is what separates the Elko’s from the rest IMO. No reason to doubt he can’t, but scheme is one thing. Using that scheme to your advantage every week as the opponents/personnel changes is another.

If true, I like it. Definitely not as exciting as hiring from the outside but it’s a good safe hire that the players and recruits can respect and be happy with.

Here’s to continued defensive success!

LOL... He's smarter than Lea...

Where you got your degree doesn’t mean you’re smarter.

I’m graduating with my MBA in 4 months from a small, D3 school. Although ranked top 5 in the Midwest, I’m sure there are members on here with more prestigious MBA’s. And I’m clearly smarter then all of you.

Brandon Smith, kid is an NFL LB in the making. Lea has been all over him recently, here's to hoping this helps with that.
