You're right Kelly is a ton better but I just won't drink kool aid until we start making consistent major bowl or playoff appearances. I don't see a problem me not wanting to drink the kool aid on a coach until we know for sure he has turned us into an elite team but whatever. it's cool if you feel differently man I know not a lot of people are like me.

I get what you're saying and agree with you for the most part (I'm drinking a little of the kook aid this season) but keep in mind that Kelly won't be here much longer.
ND is the longest coaching stint of his career, I think, and the coaching constraints/ challenges he encounters at ND may start to wear on him sooner rather than later.
My advice would be to just take a few sips of the green stuff this season and enjoy the ride, because it's not going to last forever.

BK was at GVS for like 12 years as a HC... He was an assistant there as well before he took over

He's not going anywhere anytime soon

Thanks for saving me the lookup. I knew he was at GVS for quite awhile building a team that won 2 national championships before he came up to Division I.

Speaking of championships, since this is Charlie's thread, I wonder how those Super Bowl rings are performing on the recruiting trail....

Nothing lasts forever. Kelly's not the type to stick at Notre Dame for a Snyder/Beamer/Paterno like tenure. And the pressures of the job would wear on anyone, not to mention the special frustrations of life at Notre Dame.
But so far, by outward appearance anyway, he's handled all that better than most. He's done well but not too well. He's a college guy, not some NFL scheme-head. And he's a better fit here than he would be at most other top college programs. I'm not sure where he's supposed to go, exactly.
He's in year five. I'd take the over on seven. Maybe on ten.

Charlie, however, is toast. He ought to go back to the NFL. Or, better, just retire and hang with his kids. He sincerely seems to care about them, and Lord hopes he can afford it.

I doubt they win a Big 12 game. I don't know why they hired him.

Lawrence, Kan. - Charlie Weis has been relieved of his duties as Head Football Coach at the University of Kansas, KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger announced Sunday. Weis was in the third year of a five-year contract.

Zenger named KU defensive coordinator Clint Bowen interim head coach.

"I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season," Zenger said. "But I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away.

"I appreciate what Coach Weis did with several facets of our football program," Zenger continued. "But we have not made the on-the-field progress we believe we should. I believe new leadership gives our coaches and players the best chance to make a fresh start."

Zenger informed Weis of his decision Sunday morning, and then spoke to the rest of the coaching staff. "I am grateful for the KU fans, alumni and donors who continue to support our coaches and players."

"As we continue to elevate the national stature of the University of Kansas, our pursuit of excellence extends beyond our research and instructional missions," said KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. "KU alumni, students, fans and supporters expect that Kansas Football will match the other areas in which we excel as a university. After consulting with Dr. Zenger, I am in agreement that it is time for new leadership of our football program."

I think Zenger's quote was exactly right...much like his time at ND. Many things got better. It just wasn't translating to better football on Saturdays.

Too bad.

I doubt they win a Big 12 game. I don't know why they hired him.

To be fair, how many coaches could step into Kansas right now and make them a winner in the Big 12? In my opinion the Big 12 isn't like the B1G where there's maybe 1 or 2 good teams and a bunch of nobodys. I mean, 9 of their 10 teams did go to bowls last season. Top to bottom, the Big 12 conference isn't too shabby, not a lot of cupcakes there. Kansas State hung with Auburn, and OK State hung with FSU. Baylor isn't a terrible team these days, Oklahoma is still good as witnessed last year in their bowl game. TCU had a bad year or two, but they might be rolling again. West Virginia has two losses, but they're to Oklahoma and 'Bama, and they kept both within 2 scores. Texas is rebuilding, so I'd put them middle of the road right now, they'll likely be good under Strong in a year or two. That leaves a middling Texas Tech team, and two dumpster fires in Kansas and Iowa State.

I think today's Big 12 would be hard for any coach to walk into Kansas and win. It was probably easier for guys like Mangino that were there when Colorado was still around, Snyder was still retired at KSU, Baylor was garbage, A&M was a middling team in the Big 12, and Nebraska forgot how to play defense. There were a lot more opportunities to take a team like Kansas and make them respectable. Today that's a hard job to accomplish.

What can be left for him.........certainly no more head coaching.

He'll be scooped up as an NFL offensive coordinator next season for sure. He may be a terrible head football coach, but he is an all time great play caller on the NFL level.

They should just re-hire Mangino honestly.

Another interesting name I saw floating around on Twitter was Jim Leavitt the old USF coach. He is with the Niners now.

Also Bob Stitt who is a D-2 coach and is an offensive genius is another name I saw.

I agree. It seems like the program was in disarray when Weis came in, and he at least corrected some of the problems that Gill left behind. Just hard to get on field progress in only three years IMO. A change though, was probably fair and expected.

Completely agree. This isn't the same Big XII from a decade ago where there were really only 2 or 3 teams and then everyone else. Kansas has never been a football school, that in and of itself makes any kind of success extremely difficult. Whoever does take this job should have an easier path that what Weis had, but that doesn't mean it'll be easy.

Yes, on both of these. Sometimes we aren't the best judge of our talents, or how our talents line up (or not) with our desires. I know I kicked Weis around as the ND head coach, but I never lost sight of the fact of great skill as on offensive mind. Better suited to the pros, and better suited to not have to develop young talent.

I feel bad for him because despite 3 Super Bowl rings he may be remembered as a failure as a head coach. But when I see how much money he is making I don't feel bad for him. No trying to sound like a dick but it's hard to feel bad when he will continue to get paid and should have enough to live comfortably for quite a while where I have to work an overtime shift and spend 16 hours at work and miss the game and time with my wife just to add a very tiny amount of comfort to my financial situation I find it hard to feel too sorry for him.

If you can't see a complete 180 between Charlie and BK then you're blind... Every aspect of this team feels different. The depth, talent, speed, confidence, the coaching, the assistant coaching; literally everything. I don't think CW beats BK in any area andI liked CW as a coach. I love me some BK though. He fricken gets it

Me too. But only because he was what we had at the moment, and was trying to see the brighter side...:krazy:

I most definitely need his agent to talk to my boss! This guy should be in the hall of fame for agents!

I was hoping he'd get there. Just not enough Ws. Hope he gets a good OC job in the NFL...if he wants to work. Seems like no need at this point.

Lets face it ... weis was a big roll of the dice at kansas. Like most long shots it did not go pan out. He will be calling plays on sundays next year and that is what he is good at

They gambled that he'd bring in talent, which he did...to a certain extent. Crist, Ragone, McDonald, Jake Heaps, and Justin McCay all transferred there. That's 3 former 5 star guys, more than Kansas had ever had. But they were all re-treads that didn't pan out in their first places. It obviously didn't work out in Kansas either.

Too bad for Charlie and too bad for us (the KU faithful).
