What makes someone a good GM in college? Payroll management? Scouting?

What qualities are we looking for in this fairly new position?
Since cultural and academic fit is such a big deal at ND, they need a guy that not only can build relationships and get guys on campus, but also find the under-the-radar dudes that can be difference makers.

Bowden did not have that ability; he had no scouting/evaluation chops whatsoever. He was a good relationships guy (not great though because he was such a clown that it turned some families off). Blanchard is an elite evaluator, and an elite recruiter. That's why he is such a big deal.

Im assuming him growing up in LA, being familiar with the city and all that jazz, is why USC meant more?

Yeah I'm not dumb then why didn't ND reup their offer.
Then think things through.

1. How do you know they didn't?
2. Their offer may be more than fair, but maybe TT offered something that isn't reasonable to match.
3. If the guy is just looking for a paycheck, he won't last.
4. If you simply get into a bidding war, then the salary isn't going to be in line with the others in the FB program, which will create a whole new set of problems.

I especially liked from this piece: "Perhaps one of the more exciting parts about the potential of Blanchard is his efforts in the transfer portal. While Notre Dame will never be a program that utilizes the portal to a massive degree, the aggressiveness he has shown in that department is an extremely interesting bonus to add. Just this offseason, Texas Tech put together the third ranked portal class only behind LSU and Ole Miss." And "Coach Freeman is eyeing a power move (here), proving that this Notre Dame program is here to stay."

Is there a reason Blanchard couldn't live in Texas as an easier recruiting base and just agree to be in SB Tuesday-Saturday during the season and perhaps once a month in the off-season? Allow his family to stay in Texas. I assume--without knowing so pile on please--that the role doesn't require a lot of interaction with ongoing players, especially in the off-season.

Man, this whole GM thing is something I wasn't even remotely aware of until the Bowden situation just blew up. Now it seems as if we're about three years from GMs actually being higher paid than coaches, running the recruiting and telling the coach who the personal will be that he gets to work with, maintaining budgets, etc. Gotta wonder if Saban didn't see this coming and with the increased portal complexity realized that there weren't enough hours in the day for somebody so highly dependent on and demanding of control to manage it all. Or it could be that the bag man advantage was going away per Shane Gillis.
