Irish247 did a piece on it after the season. It was also a point of contention with some recruits, specifically C. Kelly
Can you expand on this? How do we know this / any rationale why? Seems really weird.
I don't understand this either. I have never heard of something like that.
There really isn't anything more to expand on. Per the 247 report our defense conducts 1defensive meeting. There are no longer position meetings amongst the defense. Normally you'll have the defense/offense get together as a whole then break up into position groups. The defense no longer does that and yes, it isn't very common.
"Isn't very common" is an understatement. I have never heard of a staff doing this. Some of the most important instruction and film viewing is in positional meetings. I met every day with my position group at the DII level.
Yea, that was definitely said for a reason. Hopefully Max learns to football/gets a new watch so we see better/more consistent performance from the D.
FTFY
Kelly said the defense would be better with confidence. But how else is the man supposed to say it.
I do believe we will see improvement.
I do believe we will see improvement.
I wish I felt this way. I expect us to be worse assuming BVG doesn't change his system.
During the BVG (I think) interview today, on the Jack Swarbrick Show Presented by Joe Schmidt, it was mentioned that they couldn't even play nickel defense for 2 or 3 games this past season, because they didn't have a healthy 5th DB that was ready to play. They signed 5 DBs today, so hopefully they will be able to improve the backside of the defense. I'm not sure you can replace Jaylon Smith's production, though. So the key question is probably going to be........... how close can you get?
IMO there were freshman that could have helped but the staff chose not to play them.

Wait, I was looking for the BVG thread.
I've been thinking a lot, which is never good.
But ND was one of the top improvers at 8.8 points per game in the regular season. Over six were on the defense, reducing opponents point totals. And I think we played better offenses in '15 than '14. In Georgia, BVG started to catch the second year, and really took hold the third.
After the experience of Notre Dame not having the right quarterback for 5 years, and having a roster full on year 6, I wonder. For example, was KeiVarae Russell, analogous to Everett Golson? And Max another Dane Crist? The list goes on, but Kelly was deeper with Smith and Motta than he became with his own players at safety, definitely. And did injuries to Crawford (primarily), Sebastian, and Tranquil ruin this season past? I wonder.
JS has graduated. Our D should see improvement on that alone.
As far as BVG, send him packing
