So.... in commiserating after last nights game, my SEC people who only casually follow other things going on outside the ACC and SEC have ALL said how much better NDs defense looks. I got texts, calls, facebook posts etc. mentioning how good we looked and all of them thought we got hosed too.

Everyone wanted to know who Day and Jones were and where they came from. Lol.

Haha. High school All-Americans, you know?

Im with OMM and Im sure a lot of other posters who wouldn't want anyone else as our DC. BVG is awesome. Love watching his Defense do work. The D was good last night IMO...just ran into Winston who was on fire in the second half. We were in his face the entire game...he just made great plays and showed why he is a Heisman winner. The coverage was soft in the seam but that's a risk you take when you often bring pressure. Winston just made great reads/plays and got the ball out in a hurry.

The best part is that the entire starting D returns next year except for Riggs...but we have a more than competent and experienced guy replacing him in KVR. The D will be scary good with another year of experience and practice's under BVG.

The future is bright and the present is bright. Despite the heart breaking loss last night...it's good to be an ND fan right now.

Put me down for loving the CONSTANT blitzing.

I gotta say the defensive was just unbelievably good especially the first half. They were letting Florida's big, bruising backs get a yard. Incredible.

If you can stop FSU's big bruisers, you can stop Bama's bruisers. That was something we could not do in 12.

I like it, too. But, honestly, I think that FSU's coaches did a great job of making adjustments at the half. The blitzes were simply not getting there often enough, in the third quarter.

Jameis Winston is just too good. How many times in the second half did we get pressure only to have him step up and fire a perfect pass over the middle? That was frustrating.

This is a very good defense, regardless. Once we have depth and experience, we are going to be lights out.

This is basically where I'm at. I would've liked to see BVG back out of the blitz more in the second half though because it became clear that FSU had made a halftime adjustment to attack the middle of the field over the linebackers (who were either blitzing or not doing a great job in zone coverage).

Winston was absolutely unreal with his passing the second half, which is what you expect from a player of his caliber. With everything that happened we still held them to the lowest points ever with Winston at the helm. And they only put up 300-something yards of offense. Really, the game was lost more on redzone defense than anything else.

Agree. I think next year we have the chance to be dominant. I think that could be 'our year' that we have been waiting for for a long time.

Defense is lacking that great pass rusher off the edge. They have to rely too much on blitzing to get to the QB, but BVG has done a very good job.

Could BVG done better last night? Sure, hindsight is 20/20.

Notre Dame had to blitz FSU because you have to get pressure on Winston. Winston sitting back with no pressure, he would have absolutely shreaded ND worse than he did in the 2nd half. As good as Schmidt has been this year, this was a game where FSU exposed his weakness in pass coverage. He is great vs the run, but in the pass game he dropped and kept his eyes on Winston and forgot to check where the routes were coming. Its a tough challenge vs a guy like Winston where you need to drop deep enough to make sure he cant hit the seam routes/digs/etc vs dropping too deep and not be able to recover if Winston scrambles. Hence why the DBs were so far off in coverage, the LBs needed to drop deeper.

Winston is a just a damn good football player and hit that soft spot between the LBs and CBs.

BVG called a heck of a game and there isnt much he could have done. Players make plays and Winston made more plays than the defense did last night.

Agree.....Would have liked to show the blitz and drop back hoping to nab one or knock a couple down. If we have a legit edge rusher we don't have to send as many on the blitz.

I wanted to see ND play more inside leverage technique with their CBs since it was obvious the plan in the 2nd half was to attack the middle of the field. Yes inside leverage opens up out breaking patterns, Winston can make all the throws so there is no evidence that would have worked for sure. Not everything was on the CBs as many of those throws over the middle where on the safeties. When our CBs are in man I would have much rather seen them go with an inside leverage technique to take away the slants/posts. Hard to tell the alignments on TV maybe ND did try inside leverage some (although I didn't see it) and FSU still completed passes over the middle of the field.

Trumbetti should get better. He is just very young yet. Give him another year and you will have a very good pass rusher.

The way I see D next year... Trumbetti and the freshman pass rush specialists will be ready for prime time. Safety issues get ironed out, CBs are better. I think Jaylon will be ready for Schmidt play calling duties allowing Nyles Morgan to start over Schmidt. God we're gonna be filthy.

This would be my guess:

WILL: Smith
MIKE: Schmidt
SAM: Morgan

I hope not. I love what Schmidt has brought this year, but the D will never be optimal with him as a starter. It's a lot like like Tommy- solid, heady, but not a game changer.

I think we all knew this was going to take more than 30 points to win. I have been saying first one to 30 wins, modified that to first one to 35 after we gave up so much to UNC. We brought our B+ game and needed A- to get the job done against a team that is as good as anyone this year.

At the beginning of the season I would have agreed with this. I think Schmidt has played incredibly well ... far exceeding my expectations. Not all 11 need to be game changers. Some just need to be solid fundamentally sound football players. Schmidt may now wow anyone with insane physical gifts, but he won't make me throw anything at my television for making bonehead plays either. There are plenty of game changers on this D -- Jaylon, Jones, Day -- and next year we get KVR back and have back a bunch of young bucks with another year of battle-tested experience.

I hope Joe continues his strong play and I hope he is tutoring Nyles on the side. We need Nyles ready for next year, whether he is the starter or splitting time.

Joe Schmidt has earned his scholarship 5x over. He's been a hell of a player and a great success story for the walk-on program.

I would think Schmidt is guaranteed a 5th year. Keep him on and let him teach the younger guys. Basically a GA on scholarship. He is playing because he grasped what BVG was laying down quickly and put it in action on the field. Whoever can do what Joe does against the run and improve on his play against the pass will be dangerous.

Agree. I love his leadership and what he can bring to the team. He is the Cam of the defense, except that he plays more.

Like many, I was hoping for adjustments in the 2nd half. I was hoping BVG would have had an answer. It's all good though-he's still "gangsta" and all "dat"-Yo!

He has truly been the most pleasant surprise of the season for me so far. I can't imagine how he could have turned out better given his humble background.

Uh... gonna disagree on this one. Comparing FSU's run game - or lack thereof - to Bama's run game is a bit of a stretch.

Yeah, please don't go assuming things about 'Bama. Their OL are big hogs and dominant. We did a good job holding our own against FSU's OL, which is part of the reason we shut down their running game quite a bit. Scheme certainly contributed as well.
