The following is from Urban Meyer's 2008 biography Urban's Way (all of which should be taken with a grain of salt given that Urbie wrote the forward to it). My comments are in italics:

Urban considered White his friend and "I loved Notre Dame, because that's my dream," [indeed!] so naturally he was going to give serious consideration to the offer from the Irish. Jenkins and White came with their A game, too [Would Jack have done better?]. Urban discussed matters of the schedule, admissions, and facilities with them. "That's what we talked about- how to make Notre Dame more competitive for national championships," Meyer said. "All things were addressed and all things we were going to have some leeway in- which was big for Notre Dame." That night during a family discussion, as Foley awaited word, Urban told his wife and children he was rethinking his decision about accepting the Florida deal. "We go home and there's no sleeping," recalled Shelley. "Urban was in turmoil over this, pacing, trying to lie down and getting up. Talking about every factor. Many phone calls to coaches -Bob Stoops, Coach Bruce, Bob Davie, Coach Holtz- and to his father." [Did Davie and Lou tell him to go to UF?]

[...]

Foley's -and Florida's- biggest advantage would turn out to be Urban's and Shelley's desire for a strong family life, because he could recruit closer to home. [Isn't this exactly what didn't happen at UF?] At one point during the night Urban told his family he would be taking the Notre Dame job. "I wanted to go to Notre Dame," Meyer admitted, "but my family wanted to talk about going to Florida." Shelley knew how tough it was for her husband because "he left his heart at Notre Dame when we left there last time- he really, really, really loved Notre Dame."

(This is from pgs. 134-5.)

Now, let's imagine this season craters worse than now, we go 6-6 or whatever, and Swarbrick has the courage to make a change. Suppose further that Herman is interested. When Herman calls up Urbs for advice, what is he telling him?

If we lose 5 or 6 games, I'm all for firing BK and giving Herman a monster deal.

Urban Meyer says "you actually believe that I wanted to coach at ND? You know what, join the Big Ten. It'll make my job easier."

Its hard for me to even research a proven guy that would come in and be the DC. A lot of the proven guys have something already established at a good school. I like Lax's idea of bringing in MSU's co-dc but other than that, if BK actually fires BVG he will be bringing in someone that I haven't heard of lol.

"We've lost to two really good teams, and we've been sloppy," Kelly said. "We put 10 guys in the NFL last year. We've asked a lot of young players to step into new roles. We're a possession away, a play away from winning both of these games. There's no panic. There's not any of that in my eyes at all."

Maybe if you weren't such a pvssy offensive play caller we wouldn't always be "one possession" or "one play" away from winning a game? Maybe we would see more Malik Zaire in the 4th quarter if took our greatest asset (Kizer's arm) and put it to work on more than just third down?

And shouldn't we be putting 10 guys in the NFL every year? This should not be an anomaly - it should be the standard for half our players to get drafted - particularly those that start for us. All he is making is a stronger case for a better result last year!

1) Texas is not a "really good team." They just lost to Cal.
2) You were a possession away from tying the Michigan St. game, not winning it. And getting to that point required a borderline miracle.
3) If the depth chart at safety wasn't so bare then maybe you wouldn't need to use young guys.

It actually concerns me that he is not panicked. He should be scared out of his mind and coach the hell out of these kids rather than just go through the motions all week.

Firing BVG should be priority 1A.

Firing Longo should be priority 1B.

He has as much to do with this as anyone in my opinion.

Who replaces Longo? Mbechka?

I'd accepting apologies for saying Longo should Go 3 years ago and being called a troll for it for.... 3 years. I remember the day, Purdue looked like they were running on acid and our guys in mud.

I forgive you all.

Thats the problem with Strength Coaches. They are usually hooked to a HC. So, once you hire whoever they bring there Strength Coach.

Urban has a freakin' gold mine in Mickey Mariota. He's good, Smart, and super intense. Same with Saban and Cochran, hell his pay is through the roof for a job that typically doesn't pay well.

I know I just ripped off the top two programs S/C coaches, but I guarantee you, Urban would rather lose any of his assistant coaches long before he loses Mickey.

Could not agree more with the bolded. When your playing for national championships and that has been eliminated because of the product that has been put on the field, it is time to stop being a politician and get back to being a football coach. he doesn't need to act like the Dome is on fire, but damn, a little urgency should be shown

Not saying these are all great coaches but here is a list of some names to go after. Then we all can throw out opinions.

Jim Reid BC
Dave Aranda LSU
Andy Avalos Boise State
Phil Snow Temple
Justin Wilcox Wisconsin
Dave Huxtable NC State
Brent Venables Clemson*
Geoff Collins Florida*
Mike Hankwitz Northwestern
Pete Kwiatkowski Washington*
Lance Anderson Stanford*
Ted Roof Georgia tech

Names with the * next to their names might not leave their current gigs unless we can pay them more. I am by no means saying my list is perfect. Some of these coaches will really take some searching. feel free to throw out you opinions.

It doesn't have to be a homerun hire. I'd like to think it would be, but at this point all we need is "competent."

The BVG defense under Brian Kelly at ND after 9/17

The BVG defense under Brian Kelly at ND after 9/17

Just wanted to put things in perspective with my own game cut.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4RhqR2ZGkc0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Been reading around; to summarize :

  • Problem ain't Gillmore, Lyght, Burris, Elston.
  • Problem will get worse the longer it goes on.
  • Kelly is finished, only question is can ND afford to admit it yet.
  • The whole thing needs to be addressed now, even if only behind the scenes.

See Dallas Gant thread.

ND is good at polishing the turd. I feel bad for Jack Nolan that he has to say this silly stuff, but I guess that is what happens when you are the Ri Chun-hee of the ND football empire.

It was not close to "the best of times." Winning 37-36 when you are favored by 8 at home with a better QB and facing an anemic offense is still the worst of times.

We are Furman. Bum budum bum bum bum bum.

Of course when Marotti was at ND, people complained about him. His results were great at UF and OSU but he's had some amazing talent to work with.

Is Grantham someone who would succeed at ND? Seems like he has UL playing like men possessed right now.

Not sure what BVG is getting paid, but Grantham has a guaranteed 5 year contract for $1 mill per year at Louisville. And looks like he has a damn good defense with a bunch of no names.

One of the guys on Power Hour put it out there that a source told him that ND went into the game against Texas with 50-60 defensive play calls...

I heard Koon's available.

The problem isn't just that we lose to really good teams, it's that we also lose to really bad teams. And barely beat most any team.

Is this bad? Honesty asking.

I went to pull out my HS scrapbook and our team had a wristband of ~125 at our disposal. Sure we only used 15-20, but the different variations of what could be called were there. What am I missing?

Yeah that's not a good look. I think Brian Kelly was admirable in taking the blame personally. He didn't say "my defensive staff has to coach better," he put it all on himself. Yes, he is probably too loyal to coaches and barring a miraculous turnaround from the defense this season BVG should be fired, but I respect a coach to barely hints at being upset with the staff. Seems like the sort of coach who would attract top assistants should an opening become available soon...

On offense I could see that. I took it to mean the D went into that game having to know that many individual alignments with associated stunts and or responsibilities because all of the people on the show thought it was crazy.

Who was the last "really bad team" we lost to? And don't say Texas. It's too early to know what they are. Northwestern in 2014, I suppose. And before that?
We've struggled to beat good teams the last couple of years, I agree. But I remember when we lost to bad teams on the regular, and this isn't that.
