The following is from Urban Meyer's 2008 biography Urban's Way (all of which should be taken with a grain of salt given that Urbie wrote the forward to it). My comments are in italics:
(This is from pgs. 134-5.)
Now, let's imagine this season craters worse than now, we go 6-6 or whatever, and Swarbrick has the courage to make a change. Suppose further that Herman is interested. When Herman calls up Urbs for advice, what is he telling him?
Urban considered White his friend and "I loved Notre Dame, because that's my dream," [indeed!] so naturally he was going to give serious consideration to the offer from the Irish. Jenkins and White came with their A game, too [Would Jack have done better?]. Urban discussed matters of the schedule, admissions, and facilities with them. "That's what we talked about- how to make Notre Dame more competitive for national championships," Meyer said. "All things were addressed and all things we were going to have some leeway in- which was big for Notre Dame." That night during a family discussion, as Foley awaited word, Urban told his wife and children he was rethinking his decision about accepting the Florida deal. "We go home and there's no sleeping," recalled Shelley. "Urban was in turmoil over this, pacing, trying to lie down and getting up. Talking about every factor. Many phone calls to coaches -Bob Stoops, Coach Bruce, Bob Davie, Coach Holtz- and to his father." [Did Davie and Lou tell him to go to UF?]

Foley's -and Florida's- biggest advantage would turn out to be Urban's and Shelley's desire for a strong family life, because he could recruit closer to home. [Isn't this exactly what didn't happen at UF?] At one point during the night Urban told his family he would be taking the Notre Dame job. "I wanted to go to Notre Dame," Meyer admitted, "but my family wanted to talk about going to Florida." Shelley knew how tough it was for her husband because "he left his heart at Notre Dame when we left there last time- he really, really, really loved Notre Dame."
