Remember Kelly's father was a politician and I believe he either got his start or figured that is what his career would be early on. He is very media savvy and knows what to say in public. There are other qualities of a politician he holds as well.....just saying. He leaves a lot of people in his wake feeling betrayed or lied to.

Oof..."I want to coach the best players, with the best resources, in the best conference." That stings a bit.

In fairness, what is he supposed to say? "I came here to chew bubblegum and make money... and I'm all out of bubblegum."

Listening to the Zorich pod cast... much different tone that what was shared here imo... other than Joe T, all of them are either openly happy or seems happy without saying it out loud that BK is gone. The whole room agreed with the idea that the team almost won despite Bk at times.... interesting.

If he had just resigned after the bowl game, or even after the final CFP rankings came out and ND wasn't in them, I think you would be seeing near-universal happiness. The reason this feels like such a dick punch is because we're still a *viable playoff team THIS season.*

Translation: "I don't want to have to work to recruit, I don't want academics or discipline to get in the way of my roster, and I don't want to have any doubt about making the playoff with one loss." Honestly, coaching at ND is hard and I'm sure it's not for everyone. LSU may have high expectations but it's got to feel great to know that if a player is NCAA-eligible, they're field-eligible.

Not nearly as cringe-inducing as I suspected. Seems to be a reasonable monologue. I kind of give him credit for showing up in person after that group text leaked, even if he didn't take any questions.

So I wonder when the confrontation with Marcus Freeman occurred? Not sure if italics are needed…

I love you guys and than 7 hours later he bashes them.

I really feel like he bashed the admin more than the players in his speech to LSU. He was clearly in an antagonistic relationship with Swarbrick and the powers that be.

Kelly has always shown that he knows the rules, he has weighed all pros and cons before making a decision. He also always preaches how you need to be accountable, how you can't do things that jeopardize the team. Then knowing the criteria for the CFB playoff committee includes key loss of players/coaches, chose to leave his team with two weeks before the final selection when his team was sitting at #6 with a strong possibility there'll be at least one team that loses.

I supported Kelly almost to a fault during his time here but it takes one match to burn a bridge.

FUCK HIM and his hypocritical ass.

Yep, honestly it's the timing of it all that irks me. I totally understand BK chasing the bag, I totally get why he feels he's done all he can do here (even though I still believe he could have won it all here in '23 or '24 with the way things are humming along), and I can only imagine how worn out he must be to have gotten this program to where it is. He can honestly win one at LSU with less resistance and he just got PAID. Good for him.

BUT, leaving NOW, less than a week away from the playoff selection, is absolute bush-league. Luke Fickell won't leave ahead of the CFP. Lincoln Riley probably wouldn't have if they won Bedlam. How do you pack your bags at NOTRE DAME when you're in the hunt? He sold out his players more than anything and that's hard to stomach.

Fuck him and I hope he falls flat on his face at LSU. I hope Saban, Smart and the rest of the SEC steamrolls him every time they meet.

It just sucks he'll be a very rich man one way or the other, like Whiskey said. He can't really lose in this scenario, but I really wouldn't mind seeing his reputation burn along the way.

This. Want and easier path to a NC? We all understand. Just tell LSU you want to wait until after ND's last game. That's all it takes.

That part blows my mind. It always seemed like they had a pretty good relationship. Maybe he was just fed up with Swarbrick being unable to produce what he wanted out of the administration.

Think that was it.

Again, it revolves back to what sources with intimate knowledge of the situation describe as Kelly's adamant approach to fight for improved facilities for Notre Dame student-athletes – and specifically Kelly's football players.

At central issue was Kelly's desire to see the program's Guglielmino Athletics Complex renovated to include an enhanced nutrition and training center for student-athletes, as well as a players' lounge.

Yeah but this is all being taken in by us,... ND centric fans... view it from a neutral perspective, what is he supposed to say? What would YOU say in that moment... I prob say a few of the same things if I'm trying to sell myself to those guys, regardless of what is or isn't at my last school.

It’s frustrating because even if you hate Kelly and think he’s a douche, he still may be correct. It’s more concerning that if a coach wants to coach the best players with the best facilities he has to leave ND to do so. That type of systemic issue won’t be solved by changing coaches.

Its a no win:

BK succeeds: it lends credence to his ability, but pisses most of us off.

BK fails: it exposes him as a fraud, and exposes how much harder it is to coach in the big boy league, and ND had a cakewalk, etc, pissing most of us off.

I am pissed off……

So I was trying to free up space in my inbox so I can message again but I soon realized it would take too damn long to get my inbox down to 50 (Maybe that's something that can be fixed??)... while doing it however I get to the CW firing and old messages about the coaching search,.... interesting all the rumors that went down and how some even mirror the stuff we are hearing now in certain ways.

I thought this too but let EPSN spin whatever they want... because they will,... I think it's a bad cultural fit and Kelly will not get where he wants there. However, what he does or doesn't do matters not nearly as much as what our next head coach does. If it's Freeman, and he can take that final step to get ND big time wins or maybe even a natty then no one will give a damn what BK does and what it means for ND... at least no one outside of the ESPN/MSNBC hottake bullshiters.

You should do like I did and send $125 to some random PayPal account to reactivate your Varsity Club Membership, which apparently isn't a thing anymore.

I actually think he fits in better in the SEC. Kelly has always seemed more snake oil than people here portray him. I always sensed he would do shady shit if given the chance. I think he’ll fit in down there. We’ll see.

Let's be honest. That's what every coach wants. From junior high to the power 5. They are football coaches.

He gave us 12 years. His coaching prime. And he saw his school torpedo seasons with Golston, the frozen Five, turning ourselves in to the ncaa on an internal matter and had wins vacated.

While the facilities are ok, the players get stepped over when trying to study, and the school won't let him recruit a third of the best players out there and they don't even have a plane for recruiting.

He tried it ND's way. You get your teeth kicked in against the best teams.

That's a red herring. Even if the football program had the green light to pass out scholarships to every dummy with a low 40 time, those kids would fail out of school by their second semester. The issue isn't admissions standards, it's academic standards. The kids who can't get in are kept out because they wouldn't be able to maintain eligibility even if they were admitted.

I really don't find any issue with anything he said during the interview. The transcripts or tweets make it seem worse than what it was if you watch the video. Just my opinion.

Well, saying he's looking for his next challenge when he hasn't even accomplished the one in front of him (and the one those young men signed up for with him) is such a bitch move.

His whole pitch to recruits has been, ND is the hard path but the hard path is rewarding and here is why. These guys bought in and signed up for that. In the midst of a trying season that didn't start as planned they pushed through the noise and struggles to put themselves in a position to have some real post season success. And here's Kelly telling them that he's out of here, like this.

I see that I guess, my point was more a snooty North Eastern Catholic trying to fit in with that culture,... also, he can't have a down year like he did at ND... they won't give him time.
