Year in and year out so many people give the bullshit excuse 'everyone plays up for ND. ND is their superbowl. ND gets everyone's best.' When the reality is ND MAKES EVERYONE LOOK THEIR BEST.

Which is why everyone is so jacked to play us. We're soft. They know it.

I've never been under the mindset that Kelly was a great coach.
But his press conference has taken any possible shred of respect I might have given him. You demonize the entire team, including your starting QB, who even though didnt have a great game, still went 22/37 for 381 and 3 total TDs. That's pretty solid. Then you say say the coaches had nothing to do with it. I am sick of this self-righteous jerk taking zero responsibility for his failures.
Kelly is an asshat. A true douchebag. Please go back to Cincy where you belong.

People need to STOP being so beholden to the trope that "BK is the BEST ND can do." That is crap. Everyone knows that ND can hire anyone that they want. Swarbrick found Kelly. He can find his replacement too. I hate this idea that we cannot and will NEVER be able to do better. That is just a flat-out lie.

I have serious doubts that BK even wants to be here anymore, except to get a paycheck.

The entire season basically comes down to the Stanford game at this point. We might lose to some crappy teams along the way but if we beat Stanford we probably finish at worst 8-4, probably 9-3. If we lose to Stanford we're staring and 7-5 and recruiting will probably tank.
8-4 with this team, with the animosity that's about to unfold?

4-8 would be more likely.

I can't believe that he put the blame squarely on the players and nothing on the coaching.
I'm in shock. I don't like Kelly, but I never thought that he would throw his players under the bus while protecting a staff that damn near everyone can see is to fault.

Why not?

That has been his MO for a long time now.

You are wrong. Notre Dame can't hire anyone they want. We have been through this before. They wanted Myer bad and he turned them down.

Kelly wasn't even a 2nd choice was he? Thought I remember a couple other coaches being talked about

BK was on thin ice with me before this loss. After I was still clinging to hope he could right the ship with a new D coordinator NEXT season. His post game comments about the coaching not being responsible for the loss is my last straw.

For anyone that hasn't watched/read the transcript...

Kelly defended all the coaches.
Kelly threw every player (except Dexter...) under the bus.

Kelly is choosing his buddies over his players.

This is not going to end well.

We're about to see some animosity, folks... This is going to make the Weis breakup look like child's play

Good. Maybe the defense as a unit will finally start to play angry. It worked out ok in 2011 down the stretch when he called out the players. Not saying it's right but man somebody needs to do something to light a fire under this teams ass. The turnovers alone have crushed this team the last two games. Also, based on the consistently bad off field judgement exhibited by key players (such as toots daddy) over the last couple seasons I'm guessing this program could use someone who is willing to put a foot up the players asses. Don't get me wrong I think firing BVG would also send a clear message that what is currently going on is not acceptable.

Brian Kelly, at least from a philosophical standpoint of his trajectory and resume prior to coming to Notre Dame, is pretty close to the best Notre Dame can do in modern times.

It's a lie that we can't do better, but it'll be really difficult. Let's not compound that by making a bigger lie that we can get anyone we want.

IMO, Kelly is proof that even if you don't check a few boxes at Notre Dame you run the risk of things going south quickly. In some ways that says more about ND.

To me, that says a lot more about ND than it does about Duke.

It says what.... ND isn't a Power 5 team? Both teams averaged 9 wins a year '13-'15.

Duke has been a good P5 program recently under Cutcliffe. Period.

Its bad now in the midwest. Urban is a state over at THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, and Harbaugh a few hours north at scUM. That alone makes recruiting harder. ND needs to find their savior, and I no longer think it can be Kelly. Sad to say.

Did he ever own up to what he did and apologize to his team? Looked through his Twitter, but all I saw was him complaining how other players on other teams got slaps on the wrist (Jameis) and dressing like a jailbird at Halloween.

I support Kelly as a coach. He has been able to win everywhere he has been except Notre Dame, at least on a consistent basis. The real question is why can't he?

Does ND really present that big of a challenge? Coaching quality football should be universal, regardless of institution.

With that being said and depending on how the rest of the season plays out. He may not be cut out for THIS head coaching job.

Like I've said in another thread, it's just so disappointing how the season is onfolding with the promise that this team had preseason.

Here's to hoping for the best the rest of the way and Go Irish!

This is how Weis teams used to play. No passion, tons of mistakes, losing every close game on account of mistakes.

This is HORRIBLE coaching... it's finding ways to lose games against bad teams.

I agree with the mistakes part. But I think passion is reflected in the result. If we win, we wanted it more. If we lose, we were just lazy.

The simple fact is that our offense is really good. Our defense is terrible. And our tackling is obviously just not good.

I don't know enough to assign blame for any of that. BVG seems like a good scapegoat. But I mostly don't know what to think.

Sad thing is if we were to fire Kelly, we'd likely be going up against LSU and USC for a coach. Penn St and Auburn could very well be in the mix, too. The timing of all of this is absolutely terrible. Safe to say the BVG hire has been an unmitigated disaster.

Honestly, this is the first time since BK arrived that I believe an overhaul of some sort is needed. The trajectory is wrong. No more excuses. Year 7, pretty decent recruiting. ND shouldn't lose games like this anymore. I would like to say it's just the D, but it's also the culture and the energy. Embarrassing.

Fleck might come, that's an ok candidate that would be moving upwards, provided someone doesn't snatch him first. Herman ain't coming, someone will pay more money and put him in a better position...plus Urban will likely steer him away. Bielema...unless he gets ousted, I think he stays in Arkansas. He was very successful at Wisconsin and walked away because the school couldn't afford to retain his assistants. That problem doesn't get better at ND.
