It's a definite Crossroads No Doubt without the proper recruits we're not going to be able to consistently perform to a top 10 standard. University of Notre Dame has to decide what's important and it may not be the decision I like I'm not sure I'll ever be satisfied with not having the hope of winning a national championship but the reality is I may have to make that choice.

Never going to happen, they will never go the route of the winning college teams of today- you may see a drop in the schedule standard and a deemphasizing of football before that happens.

Glad I was traveling back from Utah when this game took place and just found out. I will say that this is it, BK should be gone.

That is my initial reaction at least, but I've come to realize that when it comes to it, Notre Dame does not have a commitment to winning. Fire BK, and get who? That is the state of ND. BK is absolutely in the upper tier of coaches we can get and I have little doubt if he went to real power 5 school he would be back in the NCG again within 5 seasons.

I understand ND has a commitment to academics and all of that but that doesn't stop Standford from churning out consistently tough and quality teams. It is also frustrating considering ND seems ready and willing to throw it's (alleged) Catholic purpose and mission under the bus when it comes to supporting modernist gender theory and pro-choice politicians (all while hiding behind the guise of academic and intellectual independence and integrity) but won't budge an inch to put a quality product on the field. And lets be clear, the football team has made ND a household name. The football team made ND famous and highlighted it's academic program making it a top tier destination for kids who normally wouldn't want to eschew going to a coastal school for South Bend, Indiana. The football team saved it from being another run of the mill private Catholic college like St. Thomas in Minnesota or USD out here in San Diego.

I'm not asking the university to sell its soul (it has already done that on the academic front by completing destroying any Catholic integrity they had left), I'm asking for it to be realistic and either A) allow the team to be competitive or B) just admit that it is not interested in that and level with the fans.

The A/B choice here is the most honest and to the point statement made on Notre Dame to this point. It is the crux of the issue. The University should go one way or the other and have it done.

Does this mean he gives out the #2 jersey to a new player each week? Maybe I should remove the italics.

Just a question, but if this team loses one or two of the next three games (making it either 3-3 or 2-4 heading in to the Stanford game), does someone on the staff get clipped mid-season? I think we might be 3-3 heading in to Stanford which I think is absolutely unacceptable.

At what point does something need to be done to salvage the recruiting?

Well shit. I honestly thought that, even if it came down to a shootout, we weren't losing to Duke, no way would we be 2-4 heading into Stanford. This offense was too good, but we may have lost the team today. You might be right about losing two of the next three. Kudos to you.

I voted yes, but that is dependent on VanGorder not being here, next year. I'd like to see if Kelly can bring in a top DC, and if that guy can do something with the D. If he can, then we have Kelly coaching a very potent offense, and someone else coaching, presumably, a very good defense.

I agree, there is something wrong with BK. He has so many issues right now. And I think he has a huge ego and he can't admit his huge mistakes he has been making.

Hiring the wrong DC, QB blaming, bad defense, bad special teams, wrong RB playing, can't run the ball, can't motivate players, can't beat good teams.

Trust me, I don't take any solace or glee out of being "right" about my prediction. My assumptions were based solely on speculation and inference, so there is no feeling of validation. Thank you for saying that, but I wish above anything that I had been proven very, very wrong.

This has to be one of the worst displays I have ever seen and Irish team turn in. When they showed the difference in the two sidelines (Duke fired up and jumping around and the Irish just lethargic and not doing much cheering) I knew we were cooked. Top to bottom, one of the most pathetic games I have seen while watching ND. I honestly don't know what the best approach for this team should be.

Kelly's journalistic circle of protection is breaking up. Sampson et al need to continue to call out this garbage.

Yeah, honestly it's been awhile since I've seen the team this dejected and emotionless. This offense is still good, but if there's no heart out there then they're not even going to win a shootout. I thought we could outscore mediocre teams and still scrape by till Stanford. This team is down and lost their fight.

I think you're right and I am not sure this coaching staff has the right personalities to get that emotion back in them. What would you do between now and Monday morning if you were head coach?

I can't believe that he put the blame squarely on the players and nothing on the coaching.
I'm in shock. I don't like Kelly, but I never thought that he would throw his players under the bus while protecting a staff that damn near everyone can see is to fault.

Not my convo so sorry to butt in, but IMO the reasons there is no excitement out of the offense is because they know how bad the defense is. If I'm on the offense and we score I can't really even let myself get excited because I know those points won't be good enough. I know we have to go out and do it again in a few minutes. Its almost like when you're getting blown out and you score you don't celebrate or get all fired up because you're still losing, our players seem to be doing that with all the points they know the defense will be giving up.

I don't know how you fix it other than finding a way to get the defense making plays and getting stops. For instance today after we got our one and only sack for the season the stadium was actually pretty electric. That seemed to amp up the sideline, unfortunately that wasn't sustainable because the defense shit the bed the rest of the way.

First of all, not a private convo so all are welcome, come on it.

Your first paragraph is a really interesting point of view that I hadn't really considered. Makes a lot of sense.

As for your second paragraph, when I saw the post sack celebration, it actually made me a little sad. Yes, it was good to see that kind of emotion, but it made me think of how far we have fallen. I mean, our first sack coming three and a half games in to the season is a sad state of affairs. But you are spot on about all you said.

Yeah at least in our section the sack celebration was more ironic than genuine, but regardless it did seem to amp up the whole team. Seems to me like that could help the whole team get into the game.

Sad when a head guy looks to place blame on everyone but himself once things go south. Typical for him tho

You know Duke has done pretty well the last few years with Cutcliff.

Duke has been better, but still no excuse. I absolutely despise how every visiting team is so amped to play at ND, but ND themselves barely have any fire or emotion at all. I keep scanning the sidelines for Charlie Weis. Maybe BK wants to get fired so he can keep getting paid and still get another gig at the same time

I feel that sarcasm though. Get paid and have an easier road to success at LSU

How low can this program get, you let Duke beat you. Brian Kelly is not a top 15 coach by any measure. This would never happen to Urba Meyer or Sabin ot Harbough. I can not believe we are stuck with this guy until 2021. The first person they need fire is the AD who extended his contract. This is almost as bad as when Kevin White extended Charlie Weis's contract for 10 years after he had one good season using Tyrone Willinghams recruits. And speaking of recruiting where are all the all Americans and heisman. Candidates this school should have. Notre Dame should be able to recruit the best of the best across the country and year after year all I see is 3 star and at best maybe 4 star candidates. Alabama has no problem getting 5 star players year after year. I used to think that maybe high academic standards held this team back but Stanford manages to field a respectable team year after year under the direction of Shaw. Brian Kelley took you to the ball once but he could not make the team dance; instead we were embarrassed by Alabama just a few years ago. Sorry I am just so disappointed and I don't see things changing while Kelley is the coach. We are in for at best mediocrity under his direction and I can not see things changing any time soon. So for this season all I have left is to root for some team, any ream to take down Alabama.

Cant put my finger on why but how can Duke look more enthusiastic and how can Duke score 38 points on ya. Something is very wrong here.
Year in and year out so many people give the bullshit excuse 'everyone plays up for ND. ND is their superbowl. ND gets everyone's best.' When the reality is ND MAKES EVERYONE LOOK THEIR BEST.

For anyone that hasn't watched/read the transcript...

Kelly defended all the coaches.
Kelly threw every player (except Dexter...) under the bus.

Kelly is choosing his buddies over his players.

This is not going to end well.

We're about to see some animosity, folks... This is going to make the Weis breakup look like child's play.
