Although he does have College experience I think some, if not all of BVG's problems are the fact he's 'from' the NFL. We saw a similar issue with Weis, they just don't comprehend that some of your players have limitations and you have to adjust accordingly unlike in the NFL were if you can't do it, buh bye, we will get someone off of waivers in week 4.

This is a valid point. Any coach worth his salt will adjust to the strengths and weaknesses of his players. BVG doesn't. Joe Schmidt is struggling and gets beat time and again. On the bench is a healthier, quicker and faster player, but he doesn't play him because he can't grasp the system. Ara and Lou had the same mantra, "Get your best athletes on the field".

Two things from me:

1. His avg recruiting class of #12 can't be accurate when given the amount of attrition this program sees. See my post about 2013 class yesterday. HALF of that class isn't on the team this year. That's insane. And not having senior leadership on the roster sure does affect outcomes. Does the HC need to take some of the blame for not recruiting better? Absolutely. But I take that #12 ranking with a grain of salt.

2. A .691 win% for a 13-game schedule (including the bowl games) is about 9 wins per year. He has a .500 win% in bowl games, one of which was a NC appearance. 9 wins per year, for me, isn't horrible. But it's not elite/great either. He can't seem to shake the bad losses. Without those, he's pushing high-70s in the win% range. (Still regularly gets out-coached, imo, against ranked opponents though).

This is a great coach and under the burden of the now Notre Dame compared to the semi pro major opponents-- I have no problem with Kelly. What I do think needs to be corrected is the defensive scheme--you cant play stand up straight d without the players. Notre Dame just doesn't have the defensive players and its not because this guy cant coach or recruit--its because the type of d personnel needed wont come to Notre Dame or cant get in. These guys at other schools are people who don't want college for college as they are preparing for the nfl ( or think they are ) and don't want a college life that makes them be more like a regular student. Its a fit that just cant be made in todays college football. You might say its a rigged deck. So I just sit back and watch offensive catch up football. If it were me (and I know guys will just laugh) I would never punt. What's the point just let the offense do as much as they can until they need a break---then punt.. Worst defense at the university in a long time and unless they can get 'em in on d nothing is changing. The great Notre Dame defensive personnel of the past would'nt even consider Notre Dame today.

It enabled Lou to get guys in gearing up for the nfl and while getting something important--an education-- for back up. Its what Saban is doing today except the don't even try to disguise the education concept at Ala under Saban's process bul%^$#.

They've given up 26+ points to all three teams they've played, which are Nebraska, UC Davis (no really) and an 0-3 Virginia team that is somehow the 3rd best team in their own state (behind Virginia Tech and...Richmond).

Same thing was done on defense but in some reverse fashion (as it was told to me) making practice hell but games almost easy fun. That to me is coaching- These kids look---- honestly-----shall we say sorta soft. It really hurts to say that and I saw Morgan and some guys throwing their bodies around but the defense looks reactive instead of dictating action and with their personnel that will just not work. Their not good enough to play reactive defense. I'd bet $$$$ if Lou had this defensive personnel group---- until he got what he needed he would be getting people upfield and gambling most of the time. These poor guys are just getting pushed around.

I can't think of a thing bad to say about Lou Holtz the coach, but you can't ignore the fact that offenses were nowhere near as sophisticated back during Holtz's years. In 1988, there were 6 Div-I QBs that threw for 3,000+ yards. Only 5 D-I QBs attempted more than 400 passes.

Fast forward to 2015, and there were 33 QBs that threw for 3,000+ yards, and 34 QBs that attempted more than 400 passes. Receivers had A route in 1988, not a route TREE. So it's not really fair to compare defense from the two different eras.

Apparently defenses are prepping for these new spread attacks so much that they are spending zero time on the run as the Top 5 teams on that chart RTDB like bosses.

After rewatching the defense a couple times, I don't think the run fits are that complicated: we only really do linemen firezones on a percentage of obvious passing downs. The run fits just seemed line up and make a play... which didn't happen often.
