The funny thing is the contrast between how Freeman and Kelly handle "accountability."
Freeman is down to like 3 healthy receivers... one of which is a true freshman... and you never hear him say a peep about their inconsistency, production, drops, etc. There is no "well ya know we're doing our best, but our WRs..." Kelly, on the other hand, is gaslighting the press about how his defense full of highly rated juniors and sophomores is "inexperienced" and "hey don't expect too much of these guys."
When ND fucked up with 10 guys on the field against Ohio State, Freeman was sure to say absolutely nothing about which player and which assistant coach(es) fucked up to put ND in that situation. It was all "me me me". Didn't even hint at who the party most responsible was. If Kelly was in that same situation he would've said "well, so-and-so handles to substitutions and what went wrong was blah blah blah... but as the head coach I'm ultimately responsible." That's the difference between someone who actually takes accountability and someone subtly deflects blame while feigning responsibility as the one "in charge."
I got a little hoodwinked by Kelly 2.0 but it's become crystal clear as more time passes since he left that he was on the precipice of a horrible backslide. ND would've been bad-to-mediocre last year with Kelly and they sure as hell wouldn't have made the roster moves necessary to be competitive this year.
