Breaking down ND/OU

The GSR numbers do not count transfers or those who leave early for the nfl IF they leave the university in good standing.

Meaning, player did not leave for the NFL because he became academically ineligible.

Which at ND means on track to graduate.

It's pretty bad. What do you expect us to say? ND academics > OU's. I don't even have a degree from ND, and I can tell you that without having to google.

My only thing is: does it account for the following:

- Attrition from the program
- Transfers
- Early draftees


If 47% results some from early NFL draftees and general attrition, then it's really not so upsetting.

IF all 47% stems from players playing 3-5 years in the program then leaving without a degree, then we obviously have a major problem.

It does, but it's no excuse for 53% of your team not graduating.

I know OU tries to redshirt anyone they can and usually redshirt a high percentage of incoming freshman. Academically ND is superior to most schools, but this is not why you are hated.

So Terry Hanratty, our former 1966-NC-winning, All-American QB and Conor Hanratty's pops, posts on 247 sometimes. His idea for our opening quarter drives, given OU's penchant for man coverage:

Split Eifert out wide to the left and Niklas out wide to the right to create mismatches with 6'6'' and 6'7" guys up against 6' CBs. Put speed in the slot inside each TE. Then flip-flop the TEs and the slot guys. Also, mix in misdirection running plays.

Just thought that was an interesting idea. Start the game with four wide ... Eifert, Brown, Neal, and Niklas/Koyack, GAIII in the backfield. I might like to see that.

Initially my request was to find out your thoughts in regard to this issue. Not a comparative study of the education at both schools.

The athletes at OU are given ample oppurtunity to succeed, also a number of resources. I can't speak for the football team but I know some of the other athletic teams have manditory tutoring everyday. I would think that the football team would have the same structure implemented but I am not sure.

Almost every team redshirts a great deal of their freshman, so that reasoning would help all of the other schools as well. There isn't much excuse for having the lowest GSR of all top25 teams. Even if some bizarre methodology raised OU up a few points, they would still be one of the worst.

It's not the only reason, but rest assured it is brought up more than once under the "holier than though" umbrella. Typically from those who just really hate Notre Dame.

With all do respect Mr. Hanratty, that goes against the entire game plan. (If it is in fact to ground and pound and keep OU's offense off the field). I personally like the idea, just not against OU.

I don't see either of these teams manhandling the other. I think this will probably be a close game for 4 quarters, which scares me somewhat as a Sooner fan. ND has been great late in games, the Sooners not so much. We haven't had to play late very often, but the one time we did didn't turn out to well. I've never thought much of Brian anyway, and yes he has often been sown on ND. This may be a good sign for you guys!

11 point favorite, Game Day on site, countless articles abut the history of the series and how ND has dominated, player interviews, then throw in all the students reminding the players of the game and how it's a big deal. I wonder if OU may feel too much pressure with this game?

Woolybug- I would agree that the numbers are entirely to low. I really don't know why the numbers are that low. Im guessing more emphasis is on route running than class.

Irish1- I think this OU team is mature enough to handle it. I'm sure there will be some nerves on both sides but I think the OU players realize that if you play at OU your probably going to play in some big games like this. I live in the Norman area and this has the same feel as when Texas Tech came in here ranked #1 a couple years ago.

Not true. Red-shirting saves a year of athletic eligibility, but it has no effect on academic progress. Lots of ND's players sit the first year as well, but virtually all of them still graduate in 4 years.

GSR looks at a rolling 6-year window. As long as a player graduates within that time frame, he counts.

AFAIK, the process described in this linked article is still correct. Rather than try to describe the Faculty Board of Athletics to an OU fan, I tried to explain it simply as "getting accepted to a graduate program", but in retrospect, that's probably misleading. Edits incoming.

I was posting this same thought 2 days ago on this board. I'm very concerned about your defensive front, but THIS is my biggest concern. It's why I think it likely that OU will be the much tighter team to start the game. I wouldn't be surprised if OU got down early. Which raises the question you have raised again here? Is this a mature team? I guess we'll find out.

Oh for sure. I've watched em all. Well...all in the past 40 years. But i can't even explain to you how crazed people are around here about this game. Trust me, this is different. I've had so many people here at work (yes..on forums while working) tell me: "man i hope you guys beat them". These are people that don't like OU. Hence the "you guys" phrase.
In some ways, I really hope the players aren't listenting to all this crap..but in the age of social media..that's unlikely..I don't care how many times coaching staff's tell us all in their best coachspeak: "we don't listen to that stuff".

In the town I live, we had a parade today for this game. All the kids were out of school, not for the game but for parent teacher conferences. I have a four year old daughter who is already a sooner fan. A bunch of us guys were talking about the game at the parade. On our way home my daughter asks " dad, this is a big game for the sooner huh" I said " ya babe it is" she says " I hope Kenny ( stills) is ready to rock and roll. These kids around here understand this is a big one. I know for ND because it can be somewhat of a barometer for where your program is right now. It's huge for us because we rarely get to play top tier teams out of conference. Regaurdless of what ND's record is, it's big because or the rich tradition. I think that both schools should be applauded for making this game happen. With most schools not wanting these games midway through the season because of the risk, ND and OU are willing and it could push one of them right into NCG probability. It is getting energized around here.
