He didn't say he wouldn't take another position here though.

Sounds to me like talks were had and things were positive, but Kelly is only offering him a DL job and Hoke feels a bit disrespected by just another position job.

been together since the beginning.

It might all be contingent on what Elston does. While many coaching changes wait for signing day to be announced, there is no way Central Michigan would hire a HC and then wait for today to announce it - they would want a guy in place for recruits if they have made a decision. So I assume that process is still ongoing.

Why all the Elston hate? DL has arguably been ND's strongest position group since he's been here. It's not like the Irish had real 4-3 DEs on the roster this past season and the DTs were a true strength.

I think this fits the tweets from Hayes and Zaire. Hayes would be losing his position coach; Zaire would be commenting on losing Cooks and Elston in a short span.

Keith arnold tweeted his own baseless speculation that perhaps LaFleur is going to Atlanta as QB coach for their new OC Kyle Shanahan.

OK so clearly there was discussions and something happened in the hours after this leaked to make him back off of it. Bummer.

I doubt a rumor starting would cause him to back out. My guess is he doesn't want anything less than an AHC or coordinator position.

That's not what I meant. Rumors themselves don't make people change direction (see: Cooks), but reaction to rumors does (see: external/internal pressures, contract stuff, etc.). It's why a lot of people use rumors for leverage.

Mike Frank said this did have legs, and then squashed it before Sam Webb tweeted saying it probably wasn't going to happen. There are so many things that could be a factor and were being negotiated... buyout, title, etc.

It's certainly weird how all this played out on NSD of all days.
