So let me get this straight... in a year where UM hires their White Knight and Urbie wins an NC... we are stocking up on coaches that recruit the midwest???

If it's a fully negotiated buyout then anything ND pays him increases his earnings. If UM is paying his salary per the contract then whatever ND pays him decreases UM's responsibility (and therefore doesn't enrich Hoke any further) BUT Hoke would then have a duty to mitigate his damages and couldn't accept some ridiculously low number.

I don't mean free as in ND is paying him nothing. I meant free as in Hoke is likely receiving the same amount no matter what he does, so he's essentially working for free. He could sit at home and eat chips on the couch and he'd likely make the same amount.

I believe a fully negotiated buyout is the norm (like ND did with Weis - he's now getting paid by two schools to eat chips on the couch) but I have no idea about Hoke.

EDIT: Well, I guess he probably is coming cheap.

Not gonna lie, I'd totally take Brady Hoke on this staff as a position coach. High effort recruiter, just not great at evaluating talent.

But, with Coach Kelly giving autonomy to his staff to recruit who they want, do we really want a guy that cant evaluate talent picking his own recruits?

I am hoping he can actually develop our current guys.

He did always recruit really well during the summers. Hopefully he can share some of his tactics that worked so well at the bbqs and what not.

Brian Kelly to the NFL.

In all seriousness, maybe Hoke will be a coordinator and BVG is gone?

So Notre Dame pays him a salary of $1 per year and the taxpayers of Michigan give us a free coordinator for two years.

I'll be very interested in what his pay end up being (if we ever find out). If I were them, I would pay him $1 and make scUM pay for our DL coach for the next two years!

I think this is an awesome, awesome hire for ND. I really hope he is coaching DL, Elston goes to CMU, and we either hire a Todd Lyght, Martinez, etc. at DB coach, or move Booker to secondary and hire Jeff Quinn to coach TEs and assistant HC type deal.

Nothing has changed. Hoke has already been a part of the ND staff for the past 3 seasons anyway.

Like Pops said above, Hoke has to mitigate his losses. He needs to get paid something that could be considered a FMV for his services.

Some fichigan fans pooping a little due to recruiting impact. We'll see, but I tend to agree w/ Tom Haverford's post above.

Why? That's not what Charlie Weis did.

Charlie's buy out was structured very differently. He was going to get paid what we owed him no matter what his salary was. Hoke gets paid the difference. If ND and Hoke agreed to a sweetheart deal a court could say that Hoke also violated the contract by purposefully screwing UM like that. This is all assuming Michigan guys can write a good contract, which their law school rank suggests.

This would be a huge addition IMO. The guy has experience as a D-Line coach, is an excellent recruiter and brings some clout into the living room, especially in Big10 country.

It's a power move and I love it.

I still think he's a Fred Flintstone lookin SOB that can't wear the CEO title but as a position coach and recruiter I'm all about it.

First game of the 2015 season

BK: "Put this fucking headset on Fred."

In which way was Weis' contract structured differently? I really don't get it.

Shocking but great hire IMO. Guy had a very strong reputation prior to being the HC at Michigan. There is a reason why he was able to climb the coaching ladder, he just wasn't cut out to be a big-time HC. Nothing wrong with that. Should be a great addition, seems like he could be the Midwest, poor man's version of Ed O a bit.

With Hoke, Hiestand, Quinn and Elliot on BK's staff, we have the perfect recruiting staff to land over-weight, middle aged white kids from the mid-west.
