This is inaccurate. No team outside the ACC can take the ACC slot. It has to go to an ACC team no matter the ranking and record (this is according to every article I’ve read)

Does it not matter that ND is a partial member (or however you want to put it) of the ACC?

Yep - you're right. Buddy of mine sent me this in an email

"Notre Dame can be the opponent in the Orange Bowl but it can’t take the ACC’s spot. The opponent is determined by the highest-rated available team from the Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame (it can’t be a “Group of 5” team, so no Appalachian State or Central Florida).... the ACC gets a spot in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1. Notre Dame can take the league’s spot in the Citrus."

Here's all the scenarios in a given year for ND.
https://www.herloyalsons.com/blog/notre-dame-new-years-six-and-acc-bowl-tie-ins/

As many have said, more than likely CWB vs OK St on 12/28.

Here's a cut from the Orange Bowl Tie Ins
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is locked into a 12-year deal (2014–2025) with the Orange Bowl, so if the ACC champion qualifies for the playoffs in a year when the Orange Bowl is not a semifinal host, the next-highest ranked ACC team will play in the Orange Bowl. For the secondary tie-ins, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Big Ten Conference are guaranteed three appearances each, and the University of Notre Dame can play in a maximum of two games, but is not guaranteed any appearances.

The ACC team's opponent in a given year will be the highest-ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten, and Notre Dame, subject to several constraints: the SEC and Big Ten champions are always excluded, and when an SEC and/or Big Ten team qualifies for the College Football Playoff, the next available team would also be excluded from participating in the Orange Bowl due to contractual obligations with the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl, respectively. Also, should a highest-ranked team create a rematch with the ACC team, the Orange Bowl has the option of passing over that team for the next-highest ranked team among the Big Ten, SEC, and Notre Dame, again subject to the noted constraints. Rankings are based on the College Football Playoff committee's rankings. ESPN holds the television rights for 12 years as well.

This is football and ND is NOT a football member of the ACC which is why ND comes under the opponent option.

This is also ACC's way to apply pressure for ND to become an ACC football member. Give up independence and you get to go to the Orange as long as Clemson goes to the Playoffs.

Thanks but no thanks. Isn't the Camping World Bowl's payout higher anyways?

Can't wait to watch Virginia v Alabama. Sounds like one of Bama's neutral site games.

Last year …

Camping World $5.8m
Orange (semi final) $6.0m
Citrus $8.55m

Regardless, any of these are NOT chump change by any means!

Real-time: Final bowl, Playoff projections and latest intel

Camping World Bowl Projection: Notre Dame vs. Iowa State

247Sports intel: For weeks, we felt Texas was a sure-fire pick to play Notre Dame in Orlando, a matchup of titans with the feel of a New Year's Six game. And while the Texas Bowl, per sources, would love to have the Longhorns (7-5), Texas A&M would vote against the rivalry showdown. The dream scenario simply isn't going to work out. Horns247 reports Texas' bowl destination comes down to the Camping World, Alamo or Liberty.

Citrus Bowl Projection: Michigan vs. Auburn

Orange Bowl Projection: Virginia vs. Alabama

Rose Bowl Projection: Penn State vs. Oregon

Sugar Bowl Projection: Oklahoma vs. Georgia

Cotton Bowl Projection: Florida vs. Memphis

Fiesta: No. 2 LSU vs. No. 3 Clemson

Peach: No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 4 Utah (yuck)

Since the Michigan loss we moved up only 2 spots in 6 weeks. That's almost half a season and almost no movement at all when you consider the teams that have lost in that span of time. I think we've shown on the field that the blemish in Ann Arbor was uncharacteristic of this team and not where we really were, but we could never get it out of the minds of the voters.

The Michigan game wasn't uncharacteristic, though. The last time Notre Dame won a major road game was...Oklahoma in 2012(?). And before that.....uh.....I don't know. There were some wins over top 25ish Michigan State teams but aside from that nothing comes to mind. Had close losses to UGA (this year), FSU (2014), Michigan (a couple times) but have never consistently broken through, by which I mean winning around one out of every two big road games.

that may be but the rankings are supposed to be for this season only. and that game was uncharacteristic based on all other games this season.

The problem is that ND played two top 20 teams and got beat twice, once embarassingly. The wins since the Michigan game are against bad teams, they were never going to move the needle.

If we are Camping World bound, I can't be the only one who would rather we play Texas than OK St or Iowa St, right? just based on name recognition alone?

Even though I think the Iowa St match up would be unique, and I have a lot of respect for Matt Campbell, I don't think it would be as well received outside of the two programs as far as ratings are concerned.

Idk why but the idea of playing the cowboys does nothing for me....

I am not here to say those games should have moved us way up the rankings. I was just pointing out that when ranking this years team you cant say well historically....

I will say I think there are a few teams ahead of us that have no wins vs top 30 teams and have lost to a team we beat. So, The rankings still seem to have some flaws, regardless of how we looked in our two losses.

ISU would be terrible, ND would be their Super Bowl while ND would be sleepwalking against them

It would be our first match up against either program.

But the seniors would have a chance to get the sour taste out of their mouth from the 2016 opener their freshman season.

Plus, *uck Texas in general.

Would love to see Chase haul in a 50/50 ball and do horns down, 15 yard penalty be damned.

I'm sure the media would prefer Texas but they are kind of a mess right now. I would be more into an OK State matchup. I think that would be a fun game to watch. Plus the Kelly-Gundy press conference would be gold.

The regular season ended with 79 teams with six wins, and 78 bowl spots up for grabs. That means one team (probably a 6-6 MAC team) is getting left out.

5-6 Teams That Became Bowl Eligible With A Win. Game, Odds, APR ranking in parenthesis, APR, Bowl Projection-247

Boston College at Pitt -9 -- Won -- (8) 989 -- Quick Lane Bowl
Michigan State -21.5 at Maryland -- Won -- (114) 948 -- Quick Lane Bowl
Kent State at Eastern Michigan -5.5 -- Won -- (41) 977 -- First Responders Bowl
Mississippi State -3 vs. Ole Miss -- Won -- (43) 976 -- Music City Bowl
North Carolina -8 at NC State -- Won -- (80) 964 -- Pinstripe City Bowl
Ohio -27.5 at Akron -- Won -- (28) 981 -- Camellia Bowl

All six teams that became bowl eligible except Michigan State benefited with one of their six wins over FCS teams.
The two upset winners were BC and Kent State.

Teams that could have been bowl eligible but lost their final game and finished 5-7

Colorado at Utah -28.5 -- Lost
Nebraska at Iowa -5 -- Lost
Oregon State at Oregon -17.5 -- Lost
TCU -12.5 at West Virginia -- Lost
Troy at Appalachian State -13 -- Lost
ULM at Louisiana -21 -- Lost

TCU was the only favorite to lose.

Of the three Big 12 teams we could play, I’d definitely rather Texas.
Iowa State is blah, and like CalVegas said we’d be their Super Bowl.
Okie State is also blah and do they still chuck it all over the yard? That makes me nervous.
Texas is a blue-chip so our guys will get up for the game. But they also apparently suck, so we should win. And the game will be hyped (for the Camping World Bowl). That’s always fun.

I'd take OK State, then Texas. No thanks on ISU for the reasons you mention.

OK State's ranked, kind of a cool opponent, and their best WR is out for the year, and I wouldn't be surprised if their super-star RB sits for the draft. Plus mullet.

Okie State would be a great bowl opponent for us. We'd match up well against them.

While the Camping World Bowl doesn't have the same cachet as the Orange or the Citrus (which is mostly illusory anyway), it's on the same day as the first round of the playoffs, promises a large purse, and will be high profile regardless.

A solid bowl win to take us to 11-2 and (hopefully) finish the year ranked in the top 10 would arguably be our most successful season in decades.

Question. Are you including Mizzu? Keep in mind they are 6-6, but have been banned from a bowl game by the NCAA.

Not singling you out koon but LOL@ all of the posters on here that wanted us in the CFP or a NY6 game all year and now are shaking in their boots at playing Iowa State.
